Nice job on the video, answering this new avid but clueless player's questions aptly. From the desert navy in Arizona, many thanks and salute!

Thank you. I didn’t see any masts, rigging or sails come down. This would have been a tactic in this era!

Thanks Ian. Yes, the enemy are far better at achieving this against my ships than I am with theirs, in one battle I had their numbers really low and pulled alongside to board them and as I did they destroyed my second Mast completely in two, I lost so much speed they pulled away and from that point on I was a SITTING DUCK! They destroyed my ship & I think it was the only time my ship exploded too (I have made a few enemies explode already). I have tried all variations of attack (focussing on men, hull, side-armour and indeed the rigging) despite my best efforts & loads of damage done to their sails and rigging, I have yet to have an enemy mast be completely destroyed lol. I will keep trying!

Awesome, I was hoping you'd cover this game. I haven't bought it yet because I'm still heavily invested in Evil Genius 2, but Age of Sail is what I'm moving on to after that. And thanks to your video, I'll be able to jump in prepared to take on the high seas!

I wish they’d have a timer or something to tell you when the cannons are ready

There's not a timer per se but the green dots show when the cannons are armed and ships fire when all the dots turn green

Fyi, the arrow is the way the wind is going, or "with the wind.". Square sails and multiple masts make it difficult to utilise that wind which is why ships lose so much speed. The opposite end is "into the wind" in sailing terms. this is represented by the coloured segments of the circle. Red is go-to or blown backwards, yellow is poor catchment, light is decent, and dark green is optimal for the rig you have.

Cont. To turn through the wind, you need lots of momentum as you said, but you should lower your sails as you get to the red zone and hoist them as you pass through. If you can't complete the maneuvre, you'll have to hoist enough so that you complete the turn in reverse, then fully hoist to get forward momentum once completed.

Yes thanks Rusty, I understand the wind, but read the in-ship details backwards lol.

I'm glad that someone has pointed this out, as that was a painful part of the video. To add a bit of detail, the mistake that was made was keeping full sails after crossing the T in front of the enemy very early in the battle. That took you downwind, forcing you to turn back into the wind to keep your port guns on target.

I always found it strange how the crew aren't counted as missing but as losses.

Cheers for the video mate, one point of constructive criticism though. Less waffling. I'm a new dad and work long hours, so I don't get much free time. When I search for "Age of Sail advanced tips", I don't want to hear you banging on for 5 minutes about how your mic didn't work last night. Save the rambling for streams or lets plays. This video could've been much shorter. Best of luck with the channel, much love.
