I've had my eyes on this one for a while, now, so I was very excited to dive into the full release and see if it delivers on some pretty wild promises. Get your sugar and tea and rum at the ready - there's a lot to look at!

I always buy the Ultimate Admiral / General games since its from DARTH the old TW modder. Hopefully he will eventually be able to give us a new good and deep Empire TW look a like.

Oh this is his game? Looking at the gameplay I thought about how similar it was to TW Empire. Definitely gonna check this out now.
I want something like this crossed with Sid Meier's Pirates! scope. An option of a non-linear career in the various ages with a choice of nationalities or a mix of the linear major battles with the open world ish life looking after your nation's interests... yarr!

@@Aiden-sc2qn Naval Action is what a perfect game could look like, but not at all balanced. Player count has dwindled a ton I think because top players with multiple accounts are just too strong and prey on anyone tryin to start. The game is also way too much of a grind, I tried to like it because its an amazing concept but sadly not executed perfectly.
Great review Party. You hit every nail on the head. I haven't played in months but really enjoyed my time playing it. It gets very hard trying to capture ships of the line.

Man when I captured my first? I felt like I was on top of the world.
Great review - glad to see you covering this! I was hoping the game would include a manual, but alas there's nothing in the install folder. It desperately needs more in-depth tutorials, and to do a better job at introducing players to the era and familiarize them with certain basics of the game. Something like an early campaign mission where your rudder breaks and you have trouble turning, or rigging issues, a fire, etc. etc. I think this relies on the player figuring things out for themselves a little bit too much, which doesn't work for most people who are really in the dark (especially with how brutal the combat can be). Hopefully we can see familiarization / expanded tutorials / expanded UI information in updates in the future. There ARE some tutorial videos in the game that I haven't watched yet - maybe those help. I'll check them out and report back if I remember. Regarding the land battles: There's a certain extent where land battles should be clunky , because land battles of the age WERE clunky. They all marched and fought in very rigid formations while getting golf ball sized projectiles shot through them (or cannonballs) - fun! So, I think there's a certain level of jank to be expected (though, there IS some jank that isn't expected). But also keep in mind that your units have leaders, and apparently they make bad decisions if they have horrible stats - I believe that has the potential to explain a few of the issues we're running into. The other, like having trouble selecting units via a box, is more of lacking familiarity with the controls. They've used this same command scheme for a few games now already and I still have issues with it. Besides some issues and a few bugs I've faced, I actually like the land battles. They make the ship battles more interesting by comparison and they are as brutal and painful as they should be considering the period. It's painful to wage a land war, because even if I do amazing I'm still going to lose a ton of men, and there's something about that that I like - it's almost liberating. I don't need to be 'perfect' anymore. The single most frustrating issue I've witnessed with land combat far is that the AI fields a lot of artillery pieces early in the British campaign, while you don't get access to fielding your own until late-game tech opens up (you can get mortars mid-tier - I haven't unlocked them yet). You have to rely on (very limited) pieces that you get temporary control of in missions, leaving you to mostly rely on ones you hijack from the enemy (yoink!). Pro-tip: Use your skirmishers! Excellent scouts and flank attackers in a pinch (though don't rely on them for that - they break very easily). Thanks for the fun video! And sorry for the huge post :) PS. Any plans to check out Combat Mission: Cold War when it releases sometime later this month?
Play more of it when time allows... :D Classic party. You never have time. Also this video made me immedaitely check out how development is going along with UA Dreadnoughts. Such a good one that will be i hope.

yea, Empire: TW was sort of subpar in many ways when compared to Napoleon but i still return to it because it has a scope that makes the naval battles meaningful to engage in. Gotta love fighting the french and spanish in the Americas and subjugating native tribes.

Not a huge loss..since ETW they didn't improve them at all..always the same gameplay with different types of ships....and AI is braind ead in naval battles
Awesome! I'm going pick this one up. I love the age of sail, but there really isn't to many games that do it proper justice. Hopefully, they'll eventually release an Anglo-Dutch wars campaign. That was always my favorite period of the age.
There's a hover-over ability on those damage icons to see what they mean. To get crits, the main areas to target are: the rear of the ship around the windows, just below that for the rudder, the mast bases or crows nests, the broadside around the gunports, the waterline; for chain shot, the masts and crows nests; and for grapeshot, the fore, centre, and aft decks. Using Ctrl and clicking each unit you want in the group is an alternative to the box if drag selection plays up. You can also use Ctrl to deselect units you *don't* want in a group if you want to select everything you see except, say, the supply wagon and arty.

Blending this way of doing naval battles and officer assignment etc into empire, total war would be fantastic. Empire also taking town building from that old game "colonisation" and it would become sensational.

I wish there are more games about naval combat from this era
I bought this game in early access after playing Ultimate General Civil War and I love it! The age of sail is my favorite naval period and I can feel the deck of my flagship rolling with the blasts of my broadsides when I play this game. The way they implemented researching technology in the game is cool too. In Civil War you did t have any research aspect to the campaign.
A very detailed and accurate review. The game is definitely worth a buy if you love age of sails combat.

@@ArkhBaegor Never played it honestly. I know them from the solid fun I had with the TW mods that were their background and from Ultimate General which i liked. The focus on AI is always appreciated by me, and small studios that do interesting things to genres I like tend to get my support. I'm sure Naval Action was messed up, but idk most companies have a bad game every so often so its not all that critical in my thinking.
I bought this game when on a binge of re-reading the Horatio Hornblower saga.... I regret nothing.
Ah, nice to see this is finally out of early access.
How are the damage models and animations? I would love it if the cannon balls left damage and holes where they hit and if the crew actually loaded the cannons as well as responding enemy fire. I feel like this game has the potential to be very detailed and realistic with its naval warfare which would be amazing to me. Watching the little micro animations and how things react woth eachother is my favorite part about these games.
First off, you made a very compelling video dude. I'm getting this game because of this review. Now to my question, did Total War use this engine in Empire & Napoleon?
Damn, another strategy game I need to buy. :D
Thanks PE!
We are a NAVY family. This certainly has peaked my interest. While I am glad they started in this time period, I think that Naval battles throughout history would also be enjoyable including modern vessels. I would recreate the original Carrier Fleet from the 60's when my Dad was stationed aboard the USS Shangri-La. Naval Battles have to be the most difficult mechanics for developers to conquer. So many variables at play. With that being said, I think I can safely say this game is the best representation so far. I am thoroughly excited to play _Ultimate Admiral: Age of Sail._ Stay classy my friend.

While Ultimate Admiral Dreadnoughts doesn't have carriers, it does have most other ship types from 1890s to 1940s. So you could build a Super Yamato if you wanted.

Keep an eye out for the Task Force Admiral and Sea Power games upcoming from Micro Prose if you're interested in WWII and Cold War era naval warfare respectively. They look quite promising.
Ships, wind mechanics and physics have i assume been taken from an earlier game called Naval Action, that is why they are so fleshed out. Also the icons during naval battle are the same thing as in naval action top row notifications telling you if cannonball hit/damaed hull, cannons, sails, crew or a module like pump or rudder. Overall i like it but i agree not havin living map is a missed opportunity.
Im surprised there are no mods for this game. Even for small things. Guns being more realistically loud, more smoke than lingers for longer affecting gunner accuracy. Fog where ships can hide in. Stuff like that.
My main question is - how about mods? So we would have chance to play Aubrey-Maturin saga.
My addition to the game is I think they should make you able to play smaller battles more often. Like the question marks, just as a way to get some extra cash between missions by taking a lone ship as a prize or something.
Xebec's are some of my favorite looking ships.
Im excited.
I Wonder: was there And age of an Oar before the age of sail then?
As is so often the case, A+ review Party. The pricing situation is nuts. We all know full well this will be on sale by December (at the latest), so why not just release the whole thing for $30 now and don't put it on sale quite as soon?
I played Age of Sail back in the day. Don't know if it is the same people but I have to say no game I have ever played before or since CTD like it.

I have this game. One thing I find strange is there doesn't seem to be a way to transfer crew. So, when I decide to sell a ship, I have to fire the crew and lose the crew experience. If someone knows a way (out of combat), please let me know.

Devs don't set prices. Publishers do. It's only "greedy" if the investment in the DLC is not reflected in the price it's offered at. I find Paradox typically get it about right as regards pricing versus effort that was put in.
So why can't they make a game like Total War Napoleon with this kind of Naval Warfare?
Compared to Empire, I'm really disappointed in how the battles are presented. Empire has better smoke clouds, fantastic sounds, brilliant physics. This is unfortunately very cartoony, and the battles just don't give me the same chills Empire did.
Looks just like empire total war to me but worse graphics and campain. Hope I am wrong though.

Open world would have raised it to benchmark level.....as is? Meh.
Im a big fan of Darth Mod (Game Creator) and i have played many hours on civil war generals and the darth mods, but i gotta be honest, this game is boring!
It just doesn't work....
a good modder doesn't make you a good game creator... damn, this game is bad, i rather go back to total war even if it buggy mess...
Dude, you speak soooo much like Ben Shapiro... :'D
Why does this game look so bad? Literally the navy battles in a 14 year old game Empire total war put this trash to shame.
All the problems you are having, especially with your land battles are your own fault! Its your own lack of practice and skill! It takes time to master. You want everything all easy and done for you ...try a kids game ;-) For $30 and for adults with a brain that like to strategize and have realism in tactics this is an amazing game.
