its kinda funny how people always think being vegetarian is so hard. Like no you don't instantly have to know how to prepare 300 new kinds of vegetable or whatever. You can use normal and easy recipes and just leave out the meat or go for cheese or whatever. You don't always have to stand in the kitchen for 2 hours or so. Of course you can also specify on new vegetables etc. but what I am trying to say is it is really not that hard. In the beginning maybe, yes, but after a while you realize it is not really necessary to buy so many new things that you wouldn't have bought before ( you sure can if you want to ). Just believe me that it is so easy and I dont even realize it anymore because it has just become such a routine of my mind to blend out meat.

  • @AzjatyckiCukier

I don't feel like you planned this well, or even did your basic research. Being vegetarian is not about stuffing yourself with greens. And you only had to give up meat - with so many replacements on hand (beans, lentils, cheese, tofu, eggs...) and you took no advantage of it. You ate plenty of greens, which means the calorie density of your meals was low and does not look like you adjusted for it.

+marroon rider I think you meant Cholesterol, salmonella, and carcinogen. Eggs do not contain salmonella, but it can indeed be on the shells when they are not handled properly. Processed meats are the most carcinogenic, red meat is possibly carcinogenic but there's not much evidence proving so. If any other meat is carcinogenic it is because of the way it's cooked. High temperature cooking like grilling and frying can give meats carcinogenic properties.

Ridiculous video; way to go in perpetuating stereotypes. I've been vegetarian for almost 2 decades, and don't miss a thing. It is neither harder, nor more expensive to eat meatless. Veganism is a little bit more involved, as far as finding the perfect soy cheese that doesn't cost a small fortune etc, but is also perfectly well doable. I prefer plant based anything over animal derived, and am mostly vegan, most of the time. However, my weakness are eggs. So I searched and found local, happily free roaming chicken. I also treat myself to regular cheese, as long as I know, it comes from humanly kept cows. Ethics aside, none of these animals are injected with an array of toxins, unlike their unfortunate counter parts in industrial farming.

Wow... thank you so much for what you said at the end 8:35. I feel like I get so much flack for being a vegetarian (How could you not like/eat meat? Vegetarians think they're so much better than everyone, etc.), and what you said actually made me feel really good. So, thank you. Having said that, you folks tried to be high end vegetarian. That shit is hard! High end any food is hard. Imagine trying to eat meat for the first time and having to make sausage from scratch, or the perfect osso bucco, etc. That would be challenging and time consuming too. You forgot the easy stuff, like all of the different kinds of rice and beans, or eating muesli cereal for breakfast, any kind of bean burritos, pasta, etc. It's like you tried to be a vegetarian while doing the atkins diet. You cut out meat, you don't need to cut out carbs too. Carbs are our friends :-D

Yeah, shame on them for being honest about their feelings towards vegetarianism. They should just lie and say that it's super easy to convince others. /s I actually like that they are honest about it. If you've eaten meat you entire life, it's only normal that you might have some difficulty when eating vegetarian for only 3 weeks. Your body has to adapt to a different eating pattern and that takes. Really no need to lie about that.

Daniel Abebe You don't actually lose much in the way of vitamins. As long as you eat a balanced diet of different fruits/veggies/grains, you will really only end up missing out on a few things. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics warns of a B12 deficiency as an issue, but a simple vitamin fixes that up pretty quick. Almost everything else can be readily found in other foods besides meat.

I've been a vegetarian my entire life, but I've only realized recently what the key is: SPICES. Seriously, be creative and adventurous with what you use, and use spices. I look at non-vegetarian recipes that use specific spices and then change up the ingredients. You make shredded chicken tacos? I make shredded jackfruit tacos. Also, if you're in the USA at all, there are plenty of companies that make meat substitutes that may not be the healthiest things in the world, but they can be damn delicious.

I went vegan overnight and found it easy. I used to eat eggs for breakfast and lunch, and meat/fish for dinner, +- bowls of cereals and milk (now it's almond/soy milk) a few times a day, every day. I swear it's not hard at all if you know why you're doing it. If you actually look at how the meat/dairy/leather etc. industries work, i.e. watch Earthlings, or even the much shorter Farm To Fridge, which was sufficient for me, you'll understand. You just went to a farm and saw them cute and happy, but that doesn't really break the disconnection you were talking about! See a calf being dragged away from his mum and slaughtered in front of her (so he can't have the milk that we want), a baby pig being slaughtered, and suddenly, it'll inevitably becomes easy to go vegan. Because you know it's right. And you don't want to be supporting the horrors of that industry. You just need to look into simpler recipes than what you guys were eating (which, by the way, looks delicious, but I'd be waaay too lazy to make every day). I find pasta, couscous and rice with some sort of veggies are a great solution for pretty much any meal, and they're easily found in most places. Also I can't believe you guys didn't have falafels! Falafels are the veggie dream. Oh, and also smoothies. As someone said, I'm a little disappointed with the amount of research that you guys, from this amazing, science-based channel, have put into this. Also, you can't really become iron deficient in a week, unless you bleed a lot - e.g. during your period (TMI), because your intake of iron will fluctuate anyway, so your body is quite good at adapting to different levels of it. But yeah, on a long-term perspective it's good to take some iron every now and then (especially if you're a menstruating woman), and definitely some B12! Please, please, for a huuuge fan of your videos, try this again in the future and do it the proper way?

But to go back to the animals themselves, those cows get artificially inseminated and or raped to be able to produce the milk in the first place.

+vicky L but like I said I visited the factory and I can 100% say I'm happy with what I saw. these cows weren't even touched by humans there were these equipressurised machines used and they voluntarily went to get the milk drawn. i know cruel things happen to cows but not in every place in the world. That is basically categorising all as bad.

+Montse Ortega after being pregnant once and lactating if a cow is milked on a regular basis there is no necessity for her to go through insemination.Just how in humans a mother stops lactating once the child begins to wane off and eat other food, the cows too stop lactating when they aren't milked( by calf or humans) because the brain produces oxytocin when the mammary glands are stimulated. ive personally seen these cows happy with thier routine so no I'm not guilty for consuming dairy products at all.

I'm a vegetarian going vegan and this made me exhausted lol. I have no idea what you guys were doing you barely have to do anything to be a vegetarian. If it was that hard you either 1) Eat a ridiculous amount of meat on a daily basis or 2) weren't doing it right. And for you people saying you're too picky, I am literally the pickiest person I know and I'm fine and I've never had to take supplements and vitamins. If you don't feel like planning one night just order a friggin cheese pizza! Anyways, for anyone actually interested in this and not just watching for a few minutes of entertainment, I suggest watching "Cowspiracy" on Netflix. And don't forget, if you really just can't manage to be a full vegan or vegetarian, try eating meat just on the weekends, or be a pollotarian (vegetarian who also eats poultry) or a pescetarian (vegetarian who also eats seafood).

Part of the reason I stuck with it in the last year or so was probably because everyone knew me as the vegetarian and I went back to eating meat when moving out for university. Maybe it's just easier for some people? I've heard people say your tastebuds adapt or whatever and it was completely untrue for me :/

It depends on a lot of factors, such as income, location, family support, etc. It's extremely easy to be vegan in Vietnam, where I'm living because vegetables are many folds cheaper than meat and are widely available. This may not be the case in other places (ex: fruits in Japan is crazy expensive in comparison).

I have more energy than before, my skin is cleaner, I am calmer, it's cheaper...everything is better! I love it!!!

+AsapSCIENCE I respect your effort and your desire to keep trying! My first two attempts to go straight vegan were very similar to your attempt at vegetarianism. I felt a little "off', and finding alternative meals seemed a bit daunting. My last attempt was nearly effortless though, and I feel very healthy and happy on a plant based diet now. I'd suggest trying a new brand of faux meat each time to go to the grocery store. There are so many now, I guarantee you will find some you love that are relatively budget friendly. If you do a bit of research, you will also discover that protein is all over the place. Hemp seeds, quinoa, seitan, beans, tofu, nuts, and popcorn are but a few of the many good sources. Not getting enough protein when going vegetarian/vegan is a largely irrational fear that our society seems to propagate. I would recommend supplementing B12, but other than that I believe there are plenty of nutrients to be found in an even modestly planned plant based diet. There is a bit of an upfront cost, regarding both time and money, to find plant based meals that you enjoy. Once you get past that though, it's a breeze, and will make you feel healthy and happy to be more aligned with your environmental and ethical values. Thank you for sharing your experience. I encourage you to keep at it, and please keep sharing your efforts.

good effort. most of the hurdles they faced were due to 1) not really researching things beforehand (well into it they're still associating animal products with protein - although by the end they have that great comparison showing the vegetarian dish actually had more protein than the fish) 2) transitioning overnight (works for some but for most people it's easier to do it gradually) 3) making it a challenge which psychologically feels like you're not allowed to have meat, making it artificially harder

I've been vegetarian for over a year now and I still have trouble balancing my diet, even when looking up recipes. I'm proud of you guys for trying. It takes a lot of dedication and hard work. About a month after I went vegetarian I started working in fast food and realized that it's really hard to find something that you can eat in places like that. Over the summer, I worked 40+ hours a week doing 3rd shift and it was extremely hard to get the right nutrients that I needed because I didn't have time to go to the store and I didn't have time to prepare my own meals. Now that I'm not working anymore, it's been easier to do and I've gotten more creative with my meals. Thank you guys for trying and putting this video out there, even if you got a lot of dislikes.

Tricks and tips from a vegetarian at home (i'm NOT 100% vegetarian, but I don't ever eat meat at home, which makes around 80% of my diet vegetarian) 1- If you want to go vegetarian, you HAVE to learn how to cook DIFFERENTLY. I found out it was simply a new way to think food, I'm not choosing a protein with sides of carbs and vegetables anymore, I'm cooking full meals with proteins included in it. 2- It might take time before you get the hang of it Let's face it, trying new recipe you just heard of can be pretty expensive and sometime really disappointing! And it's ever harder when your body isn't used to new sources of protein. By trying a single new vegetarian recipe every week, I ended up getting more familiar with new ingredients that I never tried before and after about a year I was able to go with a fully vegetarian diet! It also gave some time to my digestive system to "learn" how to process the new diet gradually. 3- Don't think of it as REMOVING meat from your diet, think of it as ADDING new protein sources, eventually you'll see there is no more place for meat in your new diet :) 4- If you can't stop eating meat completely (even I, will still eat meat sometime when I go out) reducing still has a great impact! You can always try to go 4 days a week vegetarian and maybe some day you'll go 24/7 vegetarian (or not, but it would still reduce the amount of meat consumed and go in the "right" direction to preserve our environment) So, next time you go grocery shopping, simply think about adding a new lentil based recipe to your weekly meal plan ;)

b12 comes from microbes/bacteria - we can't get it from plants but we can get it from fermented foods like tempeh, miso, nutritional yeast (which tastes like cheese).. It's really not a big deal and is pretty easy to get. Also you don't need much as your body stores it for years, for example if a meat eater went vegan their body would have enough b12 to last 3-5 years without having a deficiency - the deiciency is more common after 5 years in elderly vegans, but still, we get so much b12 from fortified and fermented foods that it's really no big :)

Same!! I call myself a "conflicted carnivore" AND I'm hypoglycemic making me protein dependent and I'm also carb/maybe gluten sensitive. But the carb struggle is real. It's hard to feel full w/o pasta, bread, etc... Personally, I'm trying to incorporate Meatless Mondays into my life, and once I'm better do vegetarian lunch. We can REDUCE our consumption and still make a difference. So, just try premade freezer vegetarian items to see what you like, try one random recipe a week, make vegetarian versions of your favorites. THEN build from there. Eventually, I'd like to be a "weekday vegetarian" and I feel not making everything so extreme and absolute makes everything for bearable

So I’m pescatarian right now, still working my way towards vegetarian. But I think why it’s working for me is because I’m slowly moving towards vegetarian. I stopped eating beef and pork over 5 years ago now and quit eating poultry 2 years ago. It’s a lot less of a shock to slowly take things out of your diet.

I've been vegetarian for 3.5 years (i went vegetarian when i was like 13) and now im like trying to be vegan which isnt hard at all. the only times im only eating vegetarian is when my parents cook bc they dont want me to be vegan. but as soon as i move out im gonna be a full on vegan. and i think being vegetarian is soooo easy. also being vegan is not difficult at all and also not as expensive as everyone says it is. turning vegetarian was literally a decision i made out on a walk, walking by farms.

I got literally the same problem. The only difference is that I have been vegetarian just for 1/2 year but I want to be vegan too. I just feel so bad for drinking milk or eating cheese and eggs.

I now managed to go vegan. I try to cook myself and well my parents don't know that i leave out the dairy and egg bc it can be easy to substitute those. But my parents got the message that I don't wanna have dairy and eggs anymore bc I feel so bad about consuming those. Now that I'm back to school and we barely eat as a family, I feel so great being vegan. In summer I spent a month at my uncle's where I always cooked on my own and I think if I didn't stay at his house I'd still think that it's not possible to be vegan in a very non-vegan house. You just gotta cook on your own and suggest to cook to your family. make usual vegetarian dishes and turn them vegan. They won't taste the difference. Good luck on your vegan journey. You'll feel great. Just make sure you are educated about the vegan lifestyle and that you eat enough. And also if slip-ups happen don't be to mad about yourself. You'll know better the next time.

I was a meat eater till I turned 16 and used to eat meat everyday because of my family. As soon as I was allowed to be vegetarian, I became one and I haven't struggled at all. Now I'm mostly vegan (have to wait till I move out to be allowed properly) and it's fine

You made me laugh out loud a few times. :) I think it's so great that you tried a vegetarian diet, and some of the recipes you have on here look delicious. You were very honest with your stance on whether or not a vegetarian diet would fit you while keeping it light at the same time. Keep making people smile.

@mackenzie Sanchez why because i have a cast iron stomach and can handle seeing that kind of shit. slaughtering an animal for food is one thing, it's not like i was doing depraved things to these animals. i did my job and that's that and i did it humanely. everyone has to work. so why not be in a field i can handle.

demonpride1975 the fact that you can handle it is disgusting. How can you be desensitised to murder? If animals were killed, it wasn't humane. There is no humane way to kill an animal for food.

being vegetarian is so easy!!! i’ve been for 3 years, and i don’t find it any more difficult than being a meat eater. just make sure to iron supplement, or get your iron through iron high vegetables. also you’re gonna have to eat a lot more than usual, because vegetables have a lot less calories than meats.

*UPDATED, PLS READ* The lives of egg laying chickens, dairy cows are of worse quality on average than the lives of animals raised strictly for meat. Consuming eggs, milk but not meat doesnt put a stop to or reduce meat production as meat is the mandatory biproduct of egg&milk production. Killing off male chicks and male calves, torture of dairy cows with forced impregnation to cause lactation (later steal the milk& kill the calf), and doing it over and over and over again consecutively, and finally killing them off once they succumb.. It would seem that eating much smaller amounts of meat than the average, but avoiding milk and eggs is the less abhorrent way to go, as it would again seem that boycotting meat only doesnt do as much as it would seem, and might shift production to the more cruel dairy and egg model once enough ovolactovegetarians are in the equation. People on avg overconsume meat protein 10 fold in the USA. Make sure to *research* on your own, from non dubious sources. Careful weighing needs to be done. Also, importantly, pay attention to the packaging, there are codes that indicate what type of environment the chicken was raised in; -cage (avoid at all costs, its absolute torture) -floor ...etc Now, I'm not a vegan or any other type of vegan, I'm a flexitarian, but I thought I'd point out the mechanics of the animal farming industry.

You are obviously a very smart person. I subscribe to your channel, and enjoy the science you and Mitchell are teaching. But the "egg and protein" thing just shows that you need to do some more research on how to meet your protein needs. Don`t fear carbs either, they`re awesome. I`m fifteen, and vegetarian (mostly vegan, but I`m really bad at checking lables) - I`m not a good chef, but I manage. The animal part was good - it`s good that you want to go vegetarian for them, that should always be the goal. The end, where you mimiced the nutrients of the non-vegetarian meals, is a positive thing to put out there too. But don`t say that vegetarianism is hard, please - it`s very easy for some, like myself. Thank you for the respect though, the message at the end was very heartwarming and refreshing :)

It was hard for me in the begining. But now it has became a habit. One that I'll keep doing Until no one kills any rabit. (Rabit here stands for all the animals. It was for rhyming purposes.) - It was supposed to be a poem. 15 year old. Vegetarian. But I'm unhealthy. It's my fault. But one day, I'll trancend To godhood. I'll become a vegan. The world needs peace. And that peace, You do not encounter In a slaughterhouse. Do you guys "love" your meat? You are unsensible As I once was. If the spirit that cries could see through the mask of the face, It would see destruction, pain, suffering. That's very poetic. I'm proud of myself. Leonardo Alves, 24 de Março de 2016.

For pete's sake, there is quorn, oumph and a lot of soy stuff. You can do the exactly same thing switching one single ingredients. I quit eating meat (excluding seafood) cold turkey. Then one day i stopped eating all kinds of meat . They should have asked a a vegetarian to help get started.
