    -Build a horseshoe out of snow to block the wind: "Oh yeah, that sounds rather fun." -Light up a fire with your matches, but don't put rocks around: "Ok, I'll remember that, pretty straightforward." -Go get snow or water and boil it to be able to drink: "Yeah I can definitely do that." -When you kill a racoon or skunk, use a knife, puncture around the anus hole, remove the skin. Take out the heart, the liver, the lungs, you'll eventually eat them. Boil them, and then you're gonna drink the broth do not lose any nutri.... Most people tell me that they prefer winter to summer because in the winter you can always add more layers to be warm but in the summer you can't strip beyond naked. I understand this line of thought but regardless I hate the winter. I just feel so uncomfortable and constricted wearing heavier clothing and the cold in general is just torture to me. And I live in Portugal where the winter it isn't even that bad.

    Neat Tip: If you have a lighter on you and find that it won't light because its too cold, put it up to your mouth and breathe on it it only once then try again. I've found that if you breathe on it too much it won't start, but sometimes you'll have to give it one more big breath. I don't really know the science behind it, its just from experince working as a tree trimmer in the dead of Winter in minnesota and a smoker, so I've tried a number of things to get those damn things to work when they are in your pocket. Who knows, this might save someone's life one day.

    In the Marine Corps, we call it “going internal”. You can indeed learn to deal with the mental factors…the mental suffering. You have to have been exposed to mental suffering in training. Being in a foreign country in Europe in the winter. It’s just around 30-35 degrees so it still rains but it’s a cold rain. There’s puddles turning lush fields of grass into marshland. You take a step and your foot is wet for the rest of the day. There isn’t really much drying going on because it’s cold enough to still be wet. If you hang it up at night, it’s likely to freeze. You just go deep inside yourself. Buoy are discontent…hating life and having introspective conversations with yourself to distract from it. Ive seen seasoned combat vets go internal. I remember one of my first times going internal was during a hike. Your body is just suffering horribly especially if you are short like me. You have to take larger and faster steps and you body doesn’t support the weight well. You gotta have heart to be a short hiker in the Corps. We’re hiking and my senior sees I’m hurting bad. I dip tobacco at this point in life and you can’t really do it during a hike. It will dehydrate you and it will also give you that buzz at a time where you definitely don’t need to be buzzed unless you’re a monster and this hiking thing is easy for you. My senior pulls out a stick of gum. He tells me “Put this in your mouth like tobacco. Sit it under your lip”. I did. It was like a placebo for my body. I dip wintergreen so the gun had that minty burning sensation on my lip like my tobacco and my body just started kicking it up a level. It’s a mode that has to be acquired with time and exposure to it. I’ve seen SSgts use a rock and a stick to play baseball in the freezing cold after going internal. Like, is that SSgt over there throwing up a rock and swinging at it? What in the world? I’ve never seen this behavior from SSgt. He’s internal af right now. It’s a part of training that you can’t be trained it. It just becomes subconscious after time like training a dog. It’s natural classical conditioning due to circumstance.

    The Marines say to... Take 15 minutes and you have a fire. Did you run a split in bark or did you try to use wood, did you use cotton or dried up (whatever) or was it straight wood and a stick? It needs something to absorb the heat, ignite and transfer to and from and then the actual pire. You want to put a groove in two separate pieces of wood, that way it doesn't move and you can mount it all together in one place, but if you lay it on its side, all you have to do is pull one arm towards you while pushing the other away with the lace (or "cable" which no, it's a pull saw/cable saw) or pull saw. It has a piece of rubber on each end as a handle and can also cut up everything you need, it's micro knotched and can grip it and if it's being run across something, will cut through it fairly quickly. 6" living tree takes about 30 seconds, dead and still solid is less than 10. What you see on a movie is generally wrong, but if you did "what the Marines do" then you would have a fire. You need a fire board, kindle and something to transfer it to quickly. THIS, is how we more or less do it, but you can do it with 2 pieces of sticks and nothing else if you have 3-4 hours and aren't lazy. www.wikihow.com/Start-a-Fire-with-Sticks

    Oh dear, the US Marines are so fudged if stranded in a winter habitat. You should _always_ focus on the here and now. "What can I do now to stay warm", "What can I do now to stay hydrated", etc. The burger you might have when if you come back, isn't going to help one bit. Dead trees are pretty much useless for firewood, as they are full of gooey, moist fungi. Never go hunting. Hunting is a waste of calories 99% of the time. Set out a couple of snares _IF_ you come across fresh tracks made by small animals. Fishing, if you have the tools, and forraging for lichen, moss, or even pines (for making "tea" - great source of vit. C, and tastes pretty good) is a much better option. Pine shoots (brightest, green tips of the branches) are also great food to nibble on whenever you come across them. You should also _always_ start out with more (calorie rich: chocolate, pre cooked pasta, unsalted nuts, etc) food than you will need when hiking in wintery areas. Skip the horseshoe pit to begin with, dig a snow cave first. If a storm comes, and you're not under the snow, it's pretty much bye bye. After you've made a _proper_ shelter, get the fire going. Outside, obviously. Then gather water, then food. You can survive for days and days without eating, so it has the lowest prio, at least during the first day. More importantly: Always tell someone where you're going, and when you're expected to return, and remember it's no shame in turning around and return home if your hike goes tits up. Edit: also, you can't survive freezing to death. 😅

    I used to live in Canada for 4 years and moved back to Australia last June. When I first experienced the snow and winter there I loved it even though I hate being cold. Banff would get to -40c sometimes and it’s just a completely different kind of cold. When I moved to British Columbia, the winters there were grey cold and super windy and snowy and by the last one I was done with it lol 😂 I like being cosy and looking at the snow but when you have to walk in to work everyday the novelty wears off prettt quick

    When melting snow, throw in a large handful first and melt that. Don't fill the pot up with snow and put it on the fire; the impurities in it can catch the whole lot on fire if it doesn't have a layer of water between the snow and the pot as its melting.

    -35 Celsius is not uncommon for me, and others up here. With a 30 min walk to school it's actually very refreshing! Also, if you can't find ice, boiling the lowest layer of snow, the one that looks and feels like perl sugar gives the most water. Ice fishing is also a great source of food, as you can save a lot of energy by just sitting there and wait for the fish to bite (if you can get a hole in the ice that is)

I don't drive (environmentally friendly Yay me) and I despised waiting for the bus, the cold, the wet, and all the shit you have to wear to be partially warm but not sweating. I agreed to be more friendly to the 6 months of winter we get in Edmonton. So I'm on the 'I love it" side.

    hello yes I LOVE the winter; I love the snow I love -20 weather (-30 gets... iffy but better than being above zero C). anyway curious about the guts not being edible since I know at least for pigs I think, the intestines are edible? is it because they can't be properly treated in the cold? also, curious that this video did not give hunting methods. how the heck are we supposed to get the animals? like, I doubt the encouraged method is running (way too much energy) but there was nothing on how to build traps n stuff.

  • @FurryKeidran98

    @FurryKeidran98

    4 жыл бұрын

    I realise this is old af, but to answer your question, one you don't know what that animal has been eating. Rotten meat, shit, bad water, etc. Two, as you get to the lower intestine you're basically eating shit. That's just begging for septicemia or other related diseases. It could be safe, but in a survival situation the best bet is to forgo any intestines.

    When using the bow technique he mentioned, it takes a lot of practice, if you don’t have anything you could use vines or plants, as long as they are strong and could withstand the constant rubbing of the stick you’re spinning, rounding out a stone and putting the rounded side on top of the stick to add pressure but never put too much pressure on it. The log should have a hole with a slit big enough for the wood and punk (hot wood dust basically) to fall out until you can produce an ember. You will know you have an ember when it begins smoking on its own, make sure you have plenty of tinder and small sticks with you before you begin, after you get the ember gently place it in the center of your tinder and gently enclose it, not completely so it will still be able to get airflow. Gently blow into it until your tinder bundle lights up and immediately start stacking sticks in a tipi formation around the tinder.
