    Thank you guys for being so patient with me and waiting for this one - As you can see, it took quite a while to put together! Keep an eye on the channel tomorrow (Saturday, 6/14/19) because I will be releasing my battery life time lapse video then - It's nothing special, but it goes hand-in-hand with this podcast. Cheers, everyone, and thank you so much for being here! 😊

    A cousin of mine had a small metal fragment that flew into his eye while at work, it messed him up big time. I was a kid, but I never forget seeing it, his eye was swelled up and stuff coming out of it, pretty gross. They fixed it all up later. He worked with metal fabrication at the time, but he wore an eye patch, and we called him Sagat for a while.

    I want also say like you did, my friend, that Ben isn't a greedy person, he is a generous man, an innovative inventor that has made our childhood's dream come true making all this incredible stuff at this reasonable cost. Who change for free a thing for fixing an error which wasn't his mistake? Nobody do it, NOBODY! Thank you Ben for all the efforts you make EVERY day, working 12-14/24 for making people like me happy..I can't wait to see the next marvellous innovation like the gba ndsl or the new LCD for the pocket and the DMG, you are really impressing me for everything you are accomplishing! THANK YOU GUYS!

    When it comes to these sorts of mods, I never would blame the creator. These are indie electronic mods that aren't mean to be 100% compatible with the original hardware (they're not developed by Nintendo) so if it works 95% of the time or more, I'd call that a success. Edit: Also, the Freckle Shack is VERY CHEAP when you take into account that if you don't wanna do the mod yourself and just buy a Gameboy, it's always OVER 150 bucks for it. And 150 is a generous deal when it comes to that. Account for a gb, which sometimes you can buy for 30-40 dollars, let's say 40. Add the freckle shack, you cna backlight you GBC for 110, maybe 120 to account for shipping. Want a new shell and glass screen from JellyBelly? Add 30 bucks for more just to add it up. 150 dollars to do everything, and a backlit GBC is ALWAYS more than that. Cheapest I could find right now on Ebay? 230. Maybe I'm bad at searching, but even with a GBC that's backlit at 150 on Ebay, that's without shipping. So with shipping? 160. My point in this rant is, people complain about the price and yet they don't think about the big picture. Also, remember that these mods might become cheaper in later years thanks to China, but the OG hardware will keep increasing in price which will balance out the market right back to the start.

    Why isn't this linked to the web site??!?!? Good information to know. Also mine does not line up with the screen cover. Another revision? I bought batch 5. Then delays...... I think i ended up with batch 6 because of shipping errors.... at this point there's not telling which one I actually got. I used original case and you see the silver from the screen on each side. Not what was shown.

    Props to BennVenn for fixing the Pokemon Pinball issue, but I have to say, per my understanding of Game Boy development, it's actually not very rare for games to turn off the display when redrawing the entire screen, and it's certainly not "against the rules." It actually makes a lot of sense for games to do this because the process of loading a new tilemap, background map, attributes map, window, etc into VRAM is computationally expensive, and while the display is turned on, the CPU can only perform these operations inside of specific (short) time windows. Turning the display off allows the CPU to perform these operations freely without worrying about these time constraints.

    In the official Nintendo programming manual supplied to Devs back in the day it clears says not to shut it off during a scanline or permanant damage will occur to the LCD. While games will turn the LCD off during a hblank or vblank, which is fine, doing so during a scanline isn't. It wasn't something I coded my freckleshack to expect or know how to recover from. It kind of just keeps waiting for the end of the scan line which never occurred.

    The caps on the LCD ribbon are super fragile, and to no disrespect to Benn, imo poorly located. I've already broken 2x LCD's due to the AC4 capacitor cracking away from the ribbon. AC4 is very close to the fold area, and even then all caps in this area are subject to some pressure from the controller board.

    Some people don't understand how complex it is to design a circuit to work for a very niche product. It's very complicated to try to take modern technology and incorporate it to older technology. You have to go out of your way to figure out a custom solution most, if not all of the time. This takes months, even years of research and development to get a prototype ready to be tested. Engineering is not easy. It is very tedious work that can be very time consuming, and any mistake you do could waste a lot of money if it damages consumer's property. For BennVenn to do the work he does for that cheap is commendable, because he could've easily charged 3x the price. Something like this has happened before in a different modding community; the HDMI cable solution for Gamecube was a very expensive thing, costing upwards of ~$150 at it's peak when it first came out, even though you could make your own for ~$60-$80 if you had a good soldering station and a 3D printer with the added benefit of making at least 3 of them. The first ones out there, made by Zeldaxpro, had issues where the first ones out there could kill your Gamecube if you tugged/pushed it the wrong way when it was plugged in/out. It wasn't until the Carby solution came out that it became a reasonable thing to buy. Even just buying a mod chip for the HDMI mod was $60, the only thing the cable had that the mod chip didn't was a IR remote and a connector that you could 3D print and attach to said mod chip in a way. Yeah, it was a hassle to do that, but it was better to do some labor than to pay the extra amount of money and risk damaging your Gamecube. Not to mention badassconsoles horrible situation for his solution was happening at the same time Zeldaxpro's solution was destroying Gamecube. It was so bad that many people were deterred away from HDMI solutions for a while, until it was very clear that these solutions were going to be released and could not damage your Gamecube in any way under normal use. The Gameboy modding community is lucky to have someone like BennVenn, I am happy he is able to share his work without being greedy and addressing issues professionally at his own cost. Thank you BennVenn.

    The Freckle Shacks screen is tiny! The difference in the screen size from 4.3 mm = (.1693) is 10% smaller than the original GBC 43.5 mm screen. I have ordered a 6th wave version because of your first video and now I will be canceling that order. You really should have been more forthcoming with your first video. It seems as if you overlooked that fact conveniently to help sell the BennVenn Freckle Shack kit. 10% loss of screen size is HUGE! and should have been clearly stated.

    In my opinion; Freckle Shack is still the best GBC display out there now that the biggest issues have been solved. You really focused down on blaming GameFreak for "their mistake" with using undocumented display behaviour, but undocumented behaviour is part of the parcel when it comes to old games. We see these kind of weird edge-case games constantly with emulator development, but ultimately you can't blame anyone. Undocumented behaviour is still valid hardware behaviour, it's just very frustrating and annoying when we come across these cases and have to fix our work to accommodate them. The fact that Benn fixed the issue and offered to replace old units should be celebrated above focusing on the fact that multiple game studios 20 years ago made their games rely on undocumented behaviour (Pokemon Pinball isn't the only game that turns off display outside of VBlank, there are a few examples of commercial games that also do this). Another example of a crazy undocumented behaviour is the stock GBC (and GBA) displays refreshing with pseudo interlacing where alternating rows are slightly darker during refresh; no commercial games exploit this one (to my knowledge, just a few homebrew demo ROMs) so after-market replacement displays can get away with ignoring this quirk (which is pretty difficult to replicate when you've got a frame buffer).

  • @KyleAwsm

    @KyleAwsm

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yup, you're not wrong about any of that. Perhaps I shifted too much blame to Game Freak - I was aware of other games doing the same thing but Pinball was the most prominent one at the time. More-so I wanted to shine the light on Ben for his contribution and more thoroughly explain what the big deal was with the "glitch" and explain what it actually was. Sitting down to film for 3 hours straight in one sitting tends to melt your brain a bit, so that's why I went on a bit of a tangent. Thanks for your comment!
