Autophagy 101 - Everything You Need to Know - with Dr. William Dunn

Want to learn more about the benefits of autophagy? Check out my blog! www.naomiwhittel.com/benefits...
The Real Skinny on Fat is a 9-part documentary series that uncovers the truth about FAT and how it affects your health, your weight, and your aging.
It is available to watch online for FREE beginning May 14, 2019 at 8PM EST. Be sure to sign up here to join us aff.therealskinnyonfat.com/aff... and receive your unique viewing link!
Autophagy is a word we’ve been hearing a lot recently, and I have a strong feeling that this is just the beginning. On a recent trip to Tokyo I had the honor of interviewing Dr. Yoshinori Ohsumi, the very man who introduced autophagy to the world and won a Nobel Prize doing so in 2016! (You can find that interview here: • Rare Interview with No... )
Dr. Yoshinori Ohsumi spoke honestly and humbly about our limited understanding of the full potential autophagy has, claiming he believes we only understand about 30% of what it can actually do.
That is an exciting prospect to consider, especially having come across some remarkable findings. Having the opportunity to talk to various individuals who are on the cutting edge is of course key in learning more and exploring this science. I find it extremely enlightening to learn from those who’ve grasped an understanding of what it can do for our health. Studying autophagy and its benefits for us is nothing short of a miracle, and something I want to share with all of you.
In today’s video, taken from our 9-part docuseries “The Real Skinny on Fat,” I talk to Dr. William Dunn, PhD, a professor of anatomy and cell biology at the University of Florida and one of the most respected authorities on autophagy. He has been studying the process for more than thirty years. His insight is truly fascinating and worth watching to begin to understand the science and benefits of autophagy and how you can activate it.
I hope you enjoy the interview excerpt and please be sure to post your comments and questions below. This is definitely going to be a subject we will be devoting a lot of time to, so expect to see more videos on this channel. The best analogy is just imagine that grocery stores are all closed for a month. What would you do. First you would finish off all the food in your refrigerator. Then you would start eating all the leftover foods, thereby clearing your fridge and house of all the old and outdated food. This way you have exhausted your old and stale food. Now your house is ready for fresh food to come in. That is the best layman's analogy.

I’m 59. My wife and I started IF two years ago. To begin with, it was pretty tough as I was basically a sugar junky! I persevered and gradually got to 18/20hrs fasting. Two years on, I lost 18kg/3.5stones and IF has become a life style. I run 8.5k 5 days a week on empty stomach and I’m faster and more agile than before started IF. We both have bags of energy and plenty of focus that never thought I possessed! For my 60th birthday in March, I’m planning 10k run every day in March followed by a marathon at the end of the month. We now do a 48hrs fasting the last weekend of every month to maximise autophagy. IF has been a game changer for quality of life and longevity.

At 57, I was fit and about 220lbs, athletic. But, I was feeling old. Previously I rarely ate breakfast when I started IF. Doing IF I immediately began to feel better. Im terrible at fasting and often cheat in the afternoon. Occassionally, I will fast all day. The improvements I have noticed are numerous. Skin, memory, joints , attitude. I feel decades younger. I recommend to all.

OK, here is my two-cents: Today I fasted for 18 hours. I have done a total of 20 pull ups. At the end of the fast, and in of a twenty minute period, I did 150 jumping-jacks, 100 push-ups and 100 squats. I then drank a tonic of ice water, turmeric powder, matcha powder, ginger powder, cinnamon powder, stevia liquid and a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar. This was followed with a huge salad and 4 soft boiled eggs. Multiple cups of tea all day, either Matcha or Dandelion Root. Had some Milk Thistle with one of those cups of tea. During the eating window I snacked on 7 handfuls of Pecan nuts and two Brazil nuts. For dinner I had chicken soup with finally chopped broccoli as a topping. For dessert Lily’s chocolate. Later I will take vitamin supplements Zinc, Magnesium, Potassium, D3, K2, B-Complex, and C. Next is 8 hours of sleep. Well, 4 years ago I started my life style change when I was diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation. I am 65 and my doctor is unable to detect Atrial Fibrillation. In closing, eat well rest well, keep hydrated, exercise moderately. Real food is medicine. The tools to optimize your health are HIIT, IF, cold showers, saunas, red light exposure, and meditation ( controlled breathing) Well there you have it, the things that are working for me.

FASTING IS A WEAPON FROM GOD & IT TRANSMUTES THE PRISON FLESH BODY INTO THE ORIGINAL SPIRIT LIGHT BODY... ✔ 📖 The Gospel of Thomas 27 (Apocryphal New Testament) Jesus said, "If you do not fast as regards the world you will not find the kingdom. If you do not observe the Sabbath as a Sabbath, you will not see the Father." 📖 The Acts of Thomas 28 (Apocryphal New Testament) "And the apostle ceased not to preach and to say unto them: Ye men and women, boys and girls, young men and maidens, strong men and aged, whether bond or free, abstain from fornication and covetousness and the service of the belly: for under these three heads all iniquity cometh about. For fornication blindeth the mind and darkeneth the eyes of the soul, and is an impediment to the life (conversation) of the body, turning the whole man unto weakness and casting the whole body into sickness. And greed putteth the soul into fear and shame; being within the body it seizeth upon the goods of others, and is under fear lest if it restore other men's goods to their owner it be put to shame. And the service of the belly casteth the soul into thoughts and cares and vexations, taking thought lest it come to be in want, and have need of those things that are far from it. If, then, ye be rid of these ye become free of care and grief and fear, and that abideth with you which was said by the Saviour: Take no thought for the morrow, for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Remember also that word of him of whom I spake: Look at the ravens and see the fowls of the heaven, that they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and God dispenseth unto them; how much more unto you, O ye of little faith? But look ye for his coming and have your hope in him and believe on his name. For he is the judge of quick and dead, and he giveth to every one according to their deeds, and at his coming and his latter appearing no man hath any word of excuse when he is to be judged by him, as though he had not heard. For his heralds do proclaim in the four quarters (climates) of the world. Repent ye, therefore, and believe the promise and receive the yoke of meekness and the light burden, that ye may live and not die. These things get, these keep. Come forth of the darkness that the light may receive you! Come unto him that is indeed good, that ye may receive grace of him and implant his sign in your souls." 📖 The Apocalypse of Elijah 1:15-27 (Apocryphal Old Testament) "Remember that from the time when He created the heavens, the Lord created the fast for a benefit to men on account of the passions and desires which fight against you so that the evil* will not inflame you. "But it is a pure fast which I have created," said the Lord. The one who fasts continually will not sin although jealousy and strife are within him. Let the pure one fast, but whenever the one who fasts is not pure he has angered the Lord and also the angels. And he has grieved his soul, gathering up wrath for himself for the day of wrath. *(Comment: So that the evil (spirits?) will not inflame you). But a pure fast is what I created, with a pure heart and pure hands. It releases sin. It heals diseases. It casts out demons. It is effective up to the throne of God for an ointment and for a release from sin by means of a pure prayer. Who among you, if he is honoured in his craft, will go forth to the field without a tool in his hand? Or who will go forth to the battle to fight without a breastplate on? If he is found, will he not be killed because he despised the service of the king? Likewise no one is able to enter the holy place if he is double minded. The one who is double minded in his prayer is darkness to himself. And even the angels do not trust him. Therefore be single-minded in the Lord at all times so that you might know every moment." 📖 The Essene Gospel of Peace Book 1 (Essenic Gospels & Writings) "Renew yourselves and fast. For I tell you truly, that Satan and his plagues may only be cast out by fasting and by prayer. Go by yourself and fast alone, and show your fasting to no man. The living God shall see it and great shall be your reward. And fast till Beelzebub and all his evils depart from you, and all the angels of our Earthly Mother come and serve you. For I tell you truly, except you fast, you shall never be freed from the power of Satan and from all diseases that come from Satan. Fast and pray fervently, seeking the power of the living God for your healing. While you fast, eschew the Sons of Men and seek our Earthly Mother's angels, for he that seeks shall find." 📖 The Essene Gospel of Peace - Book 1 (Essenic Gospels & Writings) Jesus: "I tell you truly, even so did Satan enter your bodies which are the habitation of God. And he took in his power all that he wished to steal: your breath, your blood, your bone, your flesh, your bowels, your eyes, and your ears. But by your fasting and your prayer, you have called back the lord of your body and his angels. And now Satan sees that the true lord of your body returns, and that it is the end of his power. Wherefore, in his wrath he gathers his strength once again, that he may destroy your bodies before the coming of the lord. It is for this that Satan torments you so grievously, for he feels that the end is come. But let not your hearts tremble, for soon will the angels of God appear, to occupy again their abodes and rededicate them as temples of God. And they will seize Satan and cast him from your bodies with all his diseases and all his uncleannesses. And happy will you be, for you will receive the reward of your steadfastness, and you will never see disease." 📖 The Second Epistle of Clement 16 - PREPARATION FOR THE DAY OF JUDGMENT "So, then, brethren, having received no small occasion to repent, while we have opportunity, let us turn to God who called us, while yet we have One to receive us. For if we renounce these indulgences and conquer the soul by not fulfilling its wicked desires, we shall be partakers of the mercy of Jesus. Know ye that the day of judgment draweth nigh like a burning oven, and certain of the heavens and all the earth will melt, like lead melting in fire; and then will appear the hidden and manifest deeds of men. Good, then, is alms [giving to the poor] as repentance from sin; better is fasting [abstaining from food & drink] than prayer, and alms than both; "charity covereth a multitude of sins," and prayer out of a good conscience delivereth from death. Blessed is every one that shall be found complete in these; for alms lightens the burden of sin." 📖 2 Enoch 56:2 (Slavonic) (Apocryphal Old Testament) "Enoch answered to his son Methuselah (and) said: Hear, child, from the time when the Lord anointed me with the ointment of his glory, (there has been no) food in me, and my soul remembers not earthly enjoyment, neither do I want anything earthly." 🔍 Definition of dry fasting: Abstaining from food & drink 📖 For some more of the hidden (manna) scriptures concerning Fasting, Alms Giving & the practice of Holy Virginity... 📚 Click here to download WORD Doc: drive.google.com/file/d/1PLgfC61_YYj27OVhTRJ941WJZ_bnNliG/view?usp=drivesdk 📚 Click here to download PDF Doc: drive.google.com/file/d/1POGBugqSO4vWk9t1X_o3SSiN5OITt__H/view?usp=drivesdk 📲 For more, visit our Facebook Page: facebook.com/godstablebox/ Click the link in pinned post for access to our Cloud Library of Deuterocanonical & Apocryphal Manuscripts, including some of the books removed from the original King James Bible Version of 1611 Click LIKE & FOLLOW to receive feed 🔥 LET JESUS HELP YOU FIND THE LIFE THAT THE ANGELS HAVE NEVER LOST... 💝 Lots of Love...

It really did not take long at all to get used to fasting, I don't find myself getting hungry ever. I am just starting to research how autophagy works and how I may benefit from it. @@naomiwhittel Most definitely. It's also equally important never to forget your roots, where you came from. You can see this in him - even though this was a short interview. That's where the humility comes through. And what keeps one grounded through ones journey. It also helps one stay focused and not stray - keep on that special path. I didn't know who you were prior to this interview. So I had a quick peek at your bio and deduced you are of that ilk which is so good to see

Benilyn Ko: last week I did water fast for 3 straight days, and everything was ok, but on day 4, I was feeling week and a little weird. That morning I run to my kitchen looking for something to drink or eat, I take sugar-free orange gelatin and eat 3 tsp . Right away I feel better. That day I break my water fast and switch to IF. Today is Saturday 14(August), I’m planing go back to water only fasting next Monday. I’m 69 and work like you , sometimes over 15 hours every day. I have to this fasting for my health. Thank you for sharing. Blessings 🙏🙏🙏🙏

You can only make a clean keto diet with IF and sometimes water fasting only. You can start with 1 day a week water fasting and continue next week with 2 days and so on . If you don't start is hard to change something. Remember that 3 days of water fasting reset your whole body !!! Look Dr. Fung video, Dr. Eric Berger, Dr. Goldhumer .. you'll discover a whole new world of living healthy 🤗

I've been intermittent fasting for two months now and I don't find myself hungry when I wake up. I don't feel the hunger I used to have at all. My body has adapted to change quickly between burning glucose and fat, so my body doesn't need to remind me of eating often. This is one of the best reasons to have IF as eating pattern. I was just moderately overweight 52 Years/176cm/79,5kg and now I'm 73,5kg and feeling great mentally and physically. IF triggered growth hormone put me into lifting weights and IF is giving me feedback which foods are better for me, so I'm in a positive loop because of IF. I'm feeling (and looking) like 40 Years old again.

There no escaping that and it all depends of your eating habit before you start the more junk in your body the worse you will feel so it's best to clean up your diet before you start that will make it easier. Juice fast for electrolytes minerals, cucumber, lemon, celery and ginger make a liter of this a day and the rest is water spring water if you can. And rest the first three days. Rest and relaxation on the first three days and keep busy mentally. Get some TV series liked up etc. After day four it's easy your energy will change.

i started IF two months ago, i lost 11+kgs, my skin improved, my nails and hair grew fast and stronger, my heartburn gone, felt amazing and most importantly i reversed my insulin resistance. so much healthier/better focus during the day. I gradually started, firstly i fasted for 18 hours, then 20, then i do OMAD- 23 hours fasting and 1 hours feasting. My gut problems gone&i didnt experience hunger. I drank bulletproof coffee with some good coconut oil and drank 1tbsp apple cider vinegar when i get up/and while i'm eating. I quit sugar and went low-carb, i tried to get into ketosis but i don't know if i achieved it or not. i stopped doing IF suddenly after losing 11kgs, just for experimenting, curious about what will happen. I introduce sugar and carbs back to my diet -in moderation, instantly i suffered gut problems, poor digestion, dry skin and pretty bad breakouts. so, i'm back with the OMAD diet, i'm feeling awesome, my problems are no longer here and still continue to loose weight. Highly recommented. 🤚🏻

@@MsLignumvitae So it all depends on how much weight to are looking to lose. In the beginning it's probably better to take it easy with dietary fat amounts as once your body becomes fat adapted( able to burn fat for fuel) you want to keep dietary fat to a minimum to allow burning fat from your body. But yes you can use a bulletproof coffee just don't over do it. Also it's very important to weed all hidden sugar from your diet. Read food labels and watch out for maltodextrin, sucrelose and other artificial sweeteners as they will spike insulin. Erythritol is a sweetener that is good to go( won't spike insulin).Try a little eyrithrtol in your black coffee to add a little sweetness. Watch labels that say sugar free as it will contain an sweetener that will spike insulin. You may want to check out the following KZread channels for more information as DR. Berg, Dr. Ken Berry, Thomas Delaure, Dr. Fung, Dr. BOZ. This should help you on your journey. I hope this helps and good luck to you.

To your discussion at the 9:00 minute mark, the more consistently you fast, the easier the transition period becomes. It may take months, but eventually your body will adapt. I can feel the changeover now when my body switches to other sources of fuel, and it only lasts literally a minute or so. The other thing that takes a long time, but eventually you'll adapt is to be active while fasting. I have been doing it long enough now that I can engage in vigorous physical activity while fasting and still have plenty of energy. This was not the case early on.

You mentioned everything about intermittent fasting, except how to maintain our weight While we are in autophagy, for example, , I don't want to lose more than a certain amount of weight, how can I stay in autophagy but not lose any more weight? Let me know about this matter please .

Katherine downover you don't need to do it everyday. Studies show that fasting 1 or two days per week is enough, you won't get more benefits if you do it all week. Furthermore, autophagy came after days, 16/18/20/24 are not sufficient, in many people autophagy starts after 2/3 days; more, women shouldn't fasting during ovulation and when their feminine hormonal are higher so it depends.

@Grace, The way I understand it is autophagy makes the cell more resilient. If it's a cancer cell, you don't want that. Cancers have two important properties...1.the cells multiply rapidly (which is why cancer tumors need lots of glucose)...2. the cells are effectively immortal by avoiding apoptosis (programmed cell death). Fasting is good because it starves cancer of excess glucose. Tumors are glucose hogs.

The way I hear it explained is normal cells autophagy goes up cancer cells autophagy goes down. Hence fasting and chemo go well together and fasting also is anti-cancer. Cancer cells need glucose and don't adapt to metabolizing ketones and this helps to kill cancer as well. Also from fasting forced ketosis.

@@kl3625 I eat whole foods and stay away from added sugars foods/drinks. You will not feel dehydrated during the day because you will have water from the food you ate in the morning and if your body still needs water it will take it from your fat stores. However, i do dry cardio every morning before my breakfast meal but when i am weight lifting i take in water. If you have lots of bodyfat to lose, i would recommend you get your body in ketosis by doing 48hr eating windows dry, that what i did to lose 60 pounds in 7 weeks. Search up snake diet on youtube for the best fasting advice. If you do watch his youtube videos make sure you sit through the whole video.
