How to Activate Autophagy - TIPS with Christiaan Leeuwenburgh, PhD

For a complete guide to autophagy: your body's most powerful anti-aging tool, check out my blog! www.naomiwhittel.com/benefits...
If only all my days started like this… Drinking coffee with a friend on a beautiful sunny day, and learning fascinating health tips from the best, on a subject I am endlessly drawn to.
Meet Professor Christiaan Leeuwenburgh, PhD. Christiaan is an old friend and someone I admire greatly, and I’m proud to add him to my list of interviews on the fascinating subject of autophagy. For those of you who are new to this subject, or new to the channel, or both, I will let Dr. Christiaan talk about what autophagy means but I will tell you that it is mind-blowing, and I would also encourage you to go back after watching this and view our other two in-depth interviews from the world’s leading authorities on the subject: Dr. William Dunn, and his long time colleague, famed Japanese scientist, Dr. Yoshinori Ohsumi. Dr. Ohsumi had the honor of receiving the Nobel Prize in 2016 for his research into autophagy, such is the fascination around this subject, which might well be one of the biggest health breakthroughs in recent times with benefits that the experts will discuss. Although if you feel inspired to learn more, I wrote my first book on the subject, Glow15, which went on to become a NY Times bestseller, that was inspired by my own personal research and experience and by Dr. Ohsumi, with whom I had the pleasure of visiting in Tokyo and hold in the highest regard.
Professor Christiaan, (who is practically my neighbor in Gainesville) was kind enough to invite me for coffee in his garden on a beautiful morning and was gracious enough to impart some of his knowledge with the cameras rolling, and for that I am extremely grateful, but not at all surprised. As Director of UF’s Biochemistry of Aging Laboratory, Christiaan has a wealth of knowledge and a desire and commitment to share it with as many as possible, and I’m thrilled to bring this to you through my channel which was created for exactly this purpose - sharing knowledge and inspiring you to lead a happier, and healthier life.
I won’t give too much away, it is better heard from the man himself, but some very interesting topics are touched on in our conversation, including fasting, Resveratrol, exercise, lifestyle, habits, diet, sleep, and much more.
Thanks for watching and please be sure to like this video if you wish to see more on the subject in the future. Your feedback is extremely important, so hit like, hit subscribe, don’t forget to click the notification bell to receive alerts when we post new videos (we post 3 every week) and by all means leave a comment if you have questions or feedback for us.
Once again, thank you watching and see you in the next video :)
-Naomi

I've lost 21# in three months, and I have so much energy. I am sleeping better and feel amazing! I would also say that I don't eat processed food. I focus on high quality foods (vegetables, some fruits and grass finished meats). Olive oil, coconut oil, nuts are also a big part of my diet. As a Dutch person I relate to just keeping fit and slim by using our bikes and legs for transport within our daily lives. No gym or sport necessary. It is about using your body the way it was meant: instead of being stuck to a desk and a car, being in motion throughout the day. Also comparing Dutch meals to American ones: portion control and home cooking make all the difference. I could not eat an American breakfast for dinner.

I’m from La Paz, the capital in the southern tip of Baja California Sur Mexico I have a life in motion Move constantly like a shark! I love to eat healthy during during my during my 2hr fasting window … Eat less often Main takeaways: 1- Eat less often. 2- Avoid sugary drinks and foods. 3- Reduce meat intake for longevity. 4- Its never too late for dietary changes. 5- Find veggies that have been stressed out (organic, colorful veggies) 6-Never start a meal with sugars, if you do eat them at last (desert). EAT LESS OFTEN -There is a genetic pathway that gets triggered by low energy. These genes (sirtuins) respond to low energy (low glucose levels-caloric restriction), high heat, low amino acids, high salt (stressors). -----They take care of the DNA repair and the stabilization of the epigenome. -When the body is hungry, the body makes NAD (fuel for the sirtuins). -Two ways to activate sirtuins synthetically: 1) Use some molecules 2) NAD booster. Longevity genes: Mtor: protein that registers amino acids. Allows the cell to build things. Not a recipe for longevity. Activates autophagy. Ampk: goes up when hungry. Makes more mitochondria (important for making energy) Sirtuins Fasting: - Metformin: mimics fasting. - Time Restricted Feeding: At least 16 hours. - Liver compensates for the lack of food. Glucose neo-genesis. It overcomes the feeling of hunger. The liver starts making glucose at a steady level. Sugar: big killer. It spikes glucose. Glucose shut down sirtuins and ampk. Defenses against diseases and aging shut down. Protein: we should avoid high protein red meat diet for longevity. It inhibits mtor. Amino acids: three important. Leucine, isoleucine, and valine: BCAAs. Are used to sense protein intake. The sensor is mtor. The mtor activates when you get them. Mtor repairs and build muscle. In the short run, this is good for building muscle etc. But in the long run, mtor is the responsible for autophagy, which is key to longevity. Plant based diets: the more vegetarian you are, the longer you live. The best, Okinawa diet, is plant base diet with fish - (probably because of Essential fatty acids) Humans grew COLD and HUNGRY. Now we live at warm houses with food available all the time.

Same with sleep. Unlike all of our friends with kids, we never woke our son and daughter on the weekends, letting them sleep as long as they needed. It's bad enough that school starts at 7:30 or 8:00. Schools that have experimented with later starting times have seen more alert students (and better grades, which is another story!).

As far I can remember I developed habits like I always skipped breakfast after getting sick a few times and I would just always skip eating every morning and this carried on my whole life. As I got older and older I noticed everyone new I met was so surprised how old I am and they always said I look 18 - 25 , I'm almost 40 now and it's never changed also my health has always been so strong to the point I go years without even catching a cold or other viruses had little affect on me like COVID did nothing. So I strongly believe the affects of autophagy

Kathleen, Lindt makes a 99% percent dark chocolate. And after watching a Dr Ekberg video I thought, 'Well, let's try it.' I was coming off a fast so I thought OK. Bought the chocolate (R53 for a 50gm block!) And ate a small square. And _YUCK!_ it was _horrible_ - like eating raw cocoa sludge. Anyway, I went back on another fast and after a while I had another little square of the chocolate. And my taste buds must have changed because I could actually taste the subtleties of the chocolate. I enjoyed it - polished the whole block off!

I did a week long fast (my own curiosity of discipline) water only. On the 5th or 6th day I was sitting in our sunroom and decided to start humming a song, my body started to feel like I was covered in a blanket that was staticky... and waves of energy started from the top of my head down to my ankles and so I started singing and the sensation increased the louder I sang. I then stopped and went silent and it was like millions of little fish were nipping at my skin. It was amazing along with that i had 0 hunger. I dont recomend this but it was a very peaceful and interesting experience. My husband was quite impressed by this challenge I had taken and passed.

As long as you take it before or after your fast, as part of your regime, yet vit C should be taken primarily from the correct foods, so inform yourself & only supplement if you know yourself to have very low levels of a certain mineral to boost yourself. You should look more towards chelator foods, as when a fast utilises fat for energy, it releases any stored toxins within the fat. It's why hydration is very important component to fasting, as it helps to clear your system. Also, milk thistle is good for removing fats stored in your liver, which is a fundamental organ to good health and often overlooked. 👍🏼Research anything that myself or anyone else has said and build your own library of knowledge. He said he uses sunscreen, but most of the real research I've read is that it is bad. Goes directly into the blood screen and depending on the ingredients makes getting sun worse, including cancer. I don't use it. Be in the sun as long as you can and then wear wide brimmed hats and sheer long sleeves etc.

If you have plant chemicals in your body you don’t have to worry so much about ‘sun screen’

Falco Malleo sure just look at how delicate plants are and do they shrivel in the sun ☀️? Come on ! And we are the crown of creation. I heard a doctor say we should have 40 different plants in us each week. Not necessarily different every week but every week having at least 40 different kinds of plants in our body and that includes roots like ginger and turmeric and hickory and Ginseng and herbs and spices like oregano basil thyme majorum and spices Cayenne pepper and cinnamon and bitter greens like arugula and kale and chard and collard greens 🥬 especially carrots 🥕 for the beta carotene! Friend of mine told me once you get a sunburn and if it’s hurting your skin just drink like 8 ounces of carrot juice immediately and the pain will go away that just goes to show you the power plants have on our bodies we eat all kinds of crap other than plants. There Are a lot of wild greens you can forage for as well like stinging nettles and chickweed and dandelion greens and plantain and Lambsquarters violet greens yes wake up be healthy receive your abundant life eat plants and lots of them fruits too ! That Is the cure for cancer ! Apples 🍎 and dandelions ! Check out Markus Products dot come ! His Wild Force products are great ! Try the ‘Green Formula’ green powder boasting over 40 wild harvested greens 🥬 you can learn a lot from Marcus and Cara too , check them out on KZread !

What kind of sunscreen should we use? I’ve heard the most popular ones are filled with dangerous chemicals? And I have recently heard that coconut oil coffee oil contains spf of a 5? Curious of your thoughts or if anyone can advise here? Thank you!

Thanks for watching Darlene! When possible choose an organic brand that is low SPF, and not rely on it for complete protection. Some of our favorite brands are Badger Sunscreen, Attitude 100% Mineral Sunscreen and Goddess Garden Organics. ~ Naomi's Coaching Team

But I hear that the sunscreen blocks the benefits of the sun light. I didn't use when I was younger sunscreen and I struggle with some dark spots on my forehead.
