Yes, nowadays researches try to investigate this possibility as well, however, as you can clearly see, he mentions nothing about IF or that people should restrain from eating during certain periods of time. We Muslims have been obligated to fast 14 centuries ago because of its benefits to the body. The hadith can also be understood in the sense that fasting protects a person from desires and mental and physical illnesses that may afflict him, and makes him get rid of bad things that may affect him negatively.

Thank you Yoshinori Ohsumi for proving fasting in science. It seems like we knew the benefits of fasting way back in time. Both tthe bible and the quran speaks about fasting. Our body loves to have rest from food intake it seems.

Even Jews,Hinduism Buddhism and Greeks promoted Fasting. Buddhism promotes One Meal a Day lifestyle and there are rules in Monastery to not eat after noon and if you don't get time to eat you ha e eat your one meal another Morning........some monks in Hindusim don't eat for 10 days in some festivals ...old wisdom that was discarded by Western scientist in the early 1900's

Because our ancient ancestors went long periods of time little to no food and our bodies, like many mammals, adapted to it. It is only recently in history that the average human would eat 3 meals of day (carbs/sugar) a day everyday of the year. Our bodies haven't adapted to the very frequent and high daily intake of carbs.

That small beginning sparked massive further research into autophagy in human bodies. The NCBI and PubMed websites have search functions where one can find numerous articles into autophagy. Also Professor Valter Longo is doing applied research, starting with mice and rats and applying to humans, and he has come out with his own version of fasting diet to induce autophagy. Prof. Longo also featured in the BBC program, "Eat, Fast, and Live Longer". It is an eye opener. Empirical data for humans is gathering.

Muslims fast for almost 30 days during the Month of Ramadan where they abstain from consuming any form of food or drink including water for a period that varies between 12 -17 hours depending on the location. The Holy Qura’an tells about fasting: “But to fast is best for you, if you only knew” Surah 2: verse 184. Moreover, it was reported that the prophet of Islam peace be upon him said: “If you fast, you get well”. It is amazing and worth pondering about: how the proven science of autophagy confirms the accuracy and the wisdom of Qura’an and the prophet traditions.
