I’m 70 years old, a retired physician, who loved my work and was a workaholic. I destroyed my health by drinking way too much booze for about two years. I’ve been sober for 42+ years, but a lot of the damage I did; DID NOT REPAIR, especially the damage to my brain and nervous system. Your advice is great and I’m going to build up my muscles and eat more protein. My extensive reading on the dangers of alcohol since January 1, 2019 has convinced me that I should have never drank alcohol. My plea to all your viewers is learn to live alcohol-free!

Increasing follistatin with protein and vitamin D is an easy first step. Second step is start taking walks, just 5-10 minutes a day works wonders. Third step is just doing short and simple body weight workouts. Like start your day with doing one set of as many pushups you can, or as many squats you can. The amount of work required to see progress is vastly overstated, and nutrition is vastly understated. Get a gram of protein per pound of body weight (2.2 grams per kilo for Euros). Get 4000 IUs of vitamin D3 from supplements. Changes the game and makes progress easy.

I think this is mostly explained by a follistatin vs myostatin balance. Myostatin prevents muscle growth. The Belgian blue cows have zero myostatin signalling due to a mutated receptor. Follistatin inhibits myostatin activity, so it prevents the prevention. Double negation meaning it increases muscle growth. Things which are known to increase follistatin are: Exercise. Protein consumption. Testosterone. Vitamin D3. I think more research should be put to finding behaviors and supplements which increases it. I've only done a cursory search for what increases it, hopefully someone deep dives on the existing research on this. Perhaps even doing new research. Increasing protein consumption and vitamin D3 are really low hanging fruit and should be done before moving onto the things people dislike more, like exercise. For reference I personally eat about 200g of animal protein and 4000IUs of vitamin D3 a day.

So, after going low carb and doing a lot of fasting for a couple years, deciding to eat more protein and do more resistance training at age 59 instead of worrying about ketones was the right move after all. Oddly enough, I went in that direction (instead of trying to lose more weight) because I'd heard that by 60 it's more important to build or retain muscle mass than lose weight. PS: FWIW, since I've concentrated on protein more than ketones, I've gained weight, but I think it's mostly muscle. I do think I gained some fat too, though. That MAY have started changing recently. When I was in my 20s, I lost about 50 pounds, pretty easily, just by doing weight training and eating less junk. I had to beat diabetes this time.

I did a rough and dirty check of my protein intake and it's on average between 30-80g per day, generally on the lower end of that range. Between your last protein video and this one I am feeling confident I can actually do it. The mental trick for me is to not limit what I can eat, but to make sure I eat above a certain protein threshold (I chose 150g/day to start), and I'm hoping that how protein impacts satiety will allow me to lose weight in a stress free and managable way. I'm also considering full body strength training but want to take baby steps so I give myself a lower opportunity to revert.

I eat slightly over 200g of animal protein a day, weighing 95kg (~210lbs). Fairly fit, barely work out currently. The periods I do work out I kind of blow up with newbie gains. Generally, if it's not working you aren't eating enough protein IMO. Vitamin D3 is more impactful than you would think as well. I eat 4000 IUs a day. Forgot to add: Godspeed. I did keto for 6 months and lost 45 lbs (I'm a 6' 290 lbs man, 40 bmi) but just couldn't maintain the diet and rebounded hard, gaining back all the weight. 2 things. I love delicious food (I HATE unappetizing food), and I hate feeling hunger. I've gotten into home cooking through covid and have some amazing recipes now (my understanding of flavor is also way better - balancing sweet, salty, acidity, bitter, umami, and spice in a wide range of ways), as well as control over texture, so I think I have tasty food covered. The thing I'm curious about is basically what you brought up. If I raise my protein levels (my plan is to have a ~80g daily boost, 2 scoops of whey power for 50g, 1 cup egg white) then up regular meal protein a bit. If I can like the flavors and can struggle to eat to my food requirements, that is a perfect situation to lose weight, because that way I can still eat some 'junkier' foods with the high protein satiety coming in to help me not binge eat. And at the end of the day, conceptually this is literally the simplest diet plan I can imagine, as the only goal is to eat high enough protein. If it fails, I simply can't imagine ending up in a worse place than food takes me right now

Funny video release timing, I've been fat all my life, raised in a small town european bakery by pattissiers. Always fluctuated between 90 and 130 kg, despite constantly trying to get to a healthy weight through diet and exercise. I would cardio 5 days a week 1.5 hours each. I've been eating a lot of protein and doing powerlifting (starting strength) for the past 2 months (just 3x45 minute days), and while my weight has remained around the same my waist has become a lot smaller and I've blown up in size compared to most other gym-goers, and i'm healthier than ever. Everyone around me has noticed. -- and best of all? It's been easy to maintain this diet rather than any I've tried before, because I add foods and still eat whatever I want after (I just want to eat less after chugging 100 grams of protein in the form of shakes, yoghurt and quark)
