What I've Learned

What I've Learned

This is about connecting the dots, making conclusions and weighing that against modern dogma. Lately I'm focusing a lot on health since it's so important yet there's so much conflicting information about it; I am also keen on enhancing productivity, enhancing cognitive capability and general self improvement. My general goal is for each video to provide some takeaway that's applicable in your daily life.

6:59 If a drug reduces the number of heart attacks from 3 in 100 to 1.9 in 100, that's actually a very significant drop. The graph shown is very misleading in that respect, because it shows the drop in NUMBER OF ALL PEOPLE WHO DO NOT SUFFER A HEART ATTACK, FROM LIPOTOR TO PLACEBO. It does not show the drop in number of people who have a heart attack from placebo to Lipotor. I hope you realize the graph is doing the very thing this video is advocating against.

This video could have been a lot shorter had it focused more on a key takeaway and combined arguments for and against a conclusion. Every time it seemed like you were going to dunk you flubbed it. Very frustrating and bizarre for a channel with so many subscribers.

I’ve noticed, throughout the years of being a health buff, that any type of fad diet will make you lose weight. This applies to both extreme parts of the spectrum, from all-vegetable to all-meat diets. The reason is simple: both of them make you eliminate a food item or ingredient that usually adds to your calorie intake from what you eat regularly. I always believe that there is balance to everything. If you want to lose weight, just eat less of what you normally eat and avoid calorie dense foods or if you want to, then take it into account and eat less on your next meal or skip a meal to compensate. It's really that simple.

👏Since we have KZread I am more interested in learning languages. Now the 9th. Every day I can practice at least 4/5 languages on the phone or outside. My friends are from different countries. Don't forget I am a grandma (over 80). I'm very much interested in new technology. There are wonderful courses on KZread. 👏

I want to point out that the part of the video that has Dr. Diamond lecturing about Atorvastatin. The graph he shows is misleading because it only shows subjects without cardiac events from the study. I looked up the study myself and it concludes that out of 19432 people, split into a statin group and a placebo group, over the course of 3.3 years, the statin group had 100 "cardiac events," as opposed to the placebo group that had 154 of these events. How these events are defined, I do not know. If you look at this data on an "event by event" basis, you can take 100 events in the statin group and divide it by the 154 events in the placebo group, and you get .64%, or in other words, a 36% reduction in events. However, What you REALLY want to do is take the entire population of the study, 19,342, divide it into two control groups, 9671, and extrapolate the percentage change of events occurring in 3.3 years based on THAT number. When you do, you find that the statin group had a 1.034% chance to have a cardiac event in 3.3 years, whereas the placebo group had a 1.592% chance of having an event. subtract these two to find the difference, and you get this: TL;DR according to the study referenced in the video for Atorvastatin, the drug lowers your odds of having a cardiac event in 3.3 years by 0.558% compared to the control group. When you divide the odds of statin users having an event (1.034%) by the odds of the control group having an event (1.592%) you get .64%, or in other words, a 36% risk reduction. It's not worth taking a drug for 3.3 years to lower your chance of a cardiac event by 0.558%.

This video was what made me reflect on my sci-fi graphic novel I’m creating that surrounds a struggling underground Mars colony that must be self-sustainable (and as scientifically accurate as I can make it), and after learning how much harder and resource-ineffective it is just to make lab grown meat? I switched their protein source to a majority vegetarian diet with specific insects, like crickets! I was even able to create some cool “Martian Cultural” foods that consist of veggies and bugs, so the world-building is now a lot more unique and realistically developed.
