Go to DrinkLMNT.com/WhatIveLearned to get a free sampler pack with any purchase! How many of you guys have been fasting? I didn't include too much of my personal experience this time around, but during my 5 day fast I either had lower libido or I was too exhausted from walking constantly to think about sex, but after refeeding my libido was definitely higher than normal

I've been doing daily 20 hr fasting and 4 hr feeding windows, but been eating whatever I want during the 4 hours. Losing about 3lbs a week. I'm going to incorporate more protien though instead of carbs. How does this apply to intermittent fasting I wonder 🤨

Note: One thing that I have always liked about your presentations is the absence of religiosity. Science is not an absolute... like dah. Every time that I have water fasted was while I have been celibate. I noticed no libido change for having no reference I am assuming... and only yucky relationships (that I allowed) before hand. You will have to ask this question later on, for when I did get into a relationship anew... I will have to test that.

The benefits are from the reduced energy in take. When total calories and protein are equated, the randomised controlled human trails shows the ratio of carbs and fat are irrelevant on biomarkers. When I've done low carb vs high carb, and kept protein and calories the same, I notice ZERO difference in fat loss biomarkers taken by blood.

I started doing intermittent fasting (IF) two years ago, weighted 212 lbs. In six months acheived my goal of 160 lbs. My testosterone (T) levels before IF were always bothering me, usually between 230-280 ng/dl. That is borderline low T for men my age (38). After two years of doing IF daily, plus 3 day fasts every 3 months, I'm now at 637 ng/dl, well into the normal range of T levels, also boasting many of the health benefits it also provides to my hormones and body in general. This works!❤

This reminds me of the “hard times -> strong men -> easy times -> weak men repeat.” Fasting creates strong men, eating constantly makes weak men quite literally. It makes absolute sense, because animals aren’t mean to live easy lives, they are meant to take on hell and come back stronger. Same with damaging your muscles to build them back. We are absolutely astounding things, and we are meant to take on absolutely astounding biological stress, not stress in an office cubical.

from what ive read it seems the current science on the topic is not that you have to "damage your muscles to build them back" but rather stressing the muscles, by pushing them near their limit for a prolonged period, that signals the body to strengthen them. you dont have to feel sore to gain muscle, (an indicator of muscle damage) but if you feel sore you probably pushed yourself harder, for longer, and so the gains will likely be bigger.

My testosterone was 894 ng/dl when I tested it almost 2 years ago and my muscle mass and habits have only gotten better since then so I suspect it's higher now. It's also made cutting very easy and reversed any sort of food addiction I ever had. I literally never crave junk food as whole foods taste amazing to me now and I can go very long without every feeling starved even when quite lean. What I've suspected and seems to be true anecdotally is that it boosts hormones and ability to put on muscle mass in the long term.

@@AndyTomlins What works for bodybuilders doesnt necessarily apply to "normal" people, their goal is different to some extent. If you call yourself a bodybuilder, that means you are willing to devote a lot of your time for maximal effects, for the day of the competition. Most people just want to be lean, somewhat stronger with the minimal amount of time, effort and attention. Im not convinced that high testosterone for like 3 days is massively better than 5 days, biology is more complicated than that. A hormonal spike serves as a signal anyways. Also growth hormone is increased WHILE fasting and drops when refeeding as far as i know. Check out Martin Berkhan, he is the pope of intermittent fasting. He is ripped AF and deadlifts like 600 pounds.

Man, I love your videos! I wanted to make a quick comment on LMNT. A few months ago I increased my workout program to include several longer workouts and occasional twice a day workouts. I started having horrible cramps within a week of increasing the workout time. I was working out in a warm garage and sweating profusely. My wife suggested some type of salts and I ended up getting LMNT. It put an immediate stop to the cramps! I quit using it and the cramps returned within 5-6 days so now my standard pre workout is an LMNT and 5g creatine. I’ve read things about creatine absorbing better with salt, so why not? I’m now on a 138 day cruise and typically hit the gym 10-12 times a week. I brought enough LMNT to take one a day for the trip. No cramps so far! Legit stuff.

My gratitude towards you is owed in particular to how you have approached controversial topics in such a way that helped me "put out the fires" of controversy to an extent, which was critically helpful in my efforts to retain hope in finding answers to my questions on these topics. I have actually decided for myself to try to become a "fellow laborer" in this field of scientific research and sharing it with others. Hi Joseph, great video as always. I’m a bit confused by your description of refeeding syndrome. I agree that there is a massive electrolyte flux into the cells, “diluting” the blood, but this would not increase blood volume (10:18) but rather decrease it. Furthermore, my understanding is that the electrolyte imbalance (specifically hypophosphatemia), coupled with insulin’s downstream effects, rapidly depletes energy stores, causing myocardial ischemia, rhabdomyolysis, and respiratory failure, leading to death. I think the myocardial ischemia can cause “heart failure,” if the person survives the acute phase, and the ischemia can decrease cardiac function and lead to heart failure in the more chronic setting. However, I think usually in the acute setting, the electrolyte imbalance causes a fatal arrhythmia, which is the more common cause of death from refeeding syndrome. Very minor correction, but otherwise great video!

The one thing I want to know that didn't seem to be mentioned in the video, unless I'm mistaken, was, how long do the heightened test levels last? Does it drop back down after a few days rapidly? Or gradually return to the pre-fast levels? Could there hypothetically be a way to do a fast cycle go increase your over all testosterone levels, or would the benefits be negligible, specifically from a training standpoint.

Afterwards went to the gym for about 4 months, and got absolutely yolked. My life was also hectic then, working 40+ hours, taking 15 credit hours worth of college courses, and worked out 4 days a week for about an hour each day, and getting on average 6 hours of sleep a night.

You really get accustomed to the feeling of hunger, almost immune to it or learn to feel little of it. On the other hand, the more frequently I eat the more hungry I am all the time. It's like spoiling your body makes it impatient, disciplining it through fasting and controlled eating intervals makes it patient.

Exactly right. After breaking a fast I still have all the symptoms of low T for weeks afterwards. I believe it's because SHBG will remain high long after T levels level off to a normal range. It's all about free T, not total.

    >water fast fast verb fasted; fasting; fasts 1: to abstain from food 2: to eat sparingly or abstain from some foods So just a fast then... Don't forget to also specify you wear a *face* mask...

There are water fasts and "dry" fasts where you consume nothing at all. Him saying it's a water fast is a normal distinction between the two. What do masks have to do with it all? Sounds passive aggressive

I started carnivore last month at 186lb, now I am 177lb. I am a bodybuilder and I was eating about 2600 calories to maintain 186lb. My carnivore diet is now at around 3300 calories. Not only did I increase my calories significantly and lost weight, I believe I was mildly insulin resistant or had some hormonal balance even though I was an active person. My strength levels stayed the same. I am assuming majority of the weight lost was fat and water with a little bit of muscle. This video literally explains why carnivore works so well. Meat makes you full for prolong periods of time therefore your insulin isn't always spiking and your're essentially fasting without trying.

As a Muslim who Fast 29-30 Days a Year in Holy Month of Ramadan I strongly agree with this. There is another video on KZread from Dr. Eric Berg that also highlights benefits of Intermitting Fasting or Fasting in General. Overall this is a Great Video

I'm glad you talked about refeeding. There is a lot of conflicting information about this. Most agree you shouldn't be eating a lot particularly after a one that is 5 day so longer. Some say you should be eating after a water fast some sugary fruit like bananas or pineapple. I worry about this due to the amount of sugar. I think you are better to start with a bone broth and a small amount of steak or fatty meat.

Hi Joseph - love your content mate! Curious regarding this - I've noticed in your longer form fast videos (7 days & 5 days) you tend to break your fast with hard to digest things like steak etc. Generally speaking I try and break a long form fast (4 days and above) with things like broth and a small handful of cooked vegetables and slowly reintroduce harder digesting foods like red meat & dairy on my 3rd or 4th meal post fast, otherwise my stomach goes all wonky & becomes an unpleasant trip to the loo haha Do you find it is the same with you or can your body tolerate harder to digest foods post a 5 day fast with minimal issues? Great video again mate!

same here. I drink bone broth after a prolonged fast. my stomach can't process the steak or other hard foods and sends me to the poo loo if I dare eat heavy things.

Great video. I enjoyed your points on how a fast can be beneficial. Usually when I fast I will take some supplements. That seems to help me when I go back to eating that steak. Thank you.

I remember learning as a kid that if you were starving in the desert for a week and made it out, the worst thing you can do is eat and drink like you did before because it can kill you. I was told that but I never knew why until now lol. I do intermittent fasting but I dig trenches in the desert for a living so going whole days without eating would have me passing out. Probably try longer fasting when I'm older.

When you mention fasting, always explain whether you're talking about dry or water fasting. Very important distinction. Thank you for the video, very informative!
