There sure are a LOT of weight management tips across the internet, and after my research it appears finding the facts from trustworthy sources is harder than it seems. Heck, I’m a doctor and had trouble verifying a lot of this stuff, so how is someone without a medical degree supposed to find accurate and safe info? Today I’m taking a look at some popular weight loss tips around the internet to tell you what’s real and and what’s not.

    lol, I do know from experience that having a dog keeps me more active. I am pregnant in my third trimester and feeling fatigued much of the time, but the dog needs to walk. My husband will do it by himself if I am really not feeling well, but he always encourages me to go with him.

    Dido, Japan and other countries have ads for us that are like "help the USA, they're ppl are starving, to many are homeless" or something like that. Ive seen the ads to an i was just like "yep, 100% true, great country we are not".

    I also never quite understood this argument. Me throwing food away is not exactly taking it from starving people. And if I don't know any starving people I can go and give it to, it doesn't really matter. My body is not a garbage disposal. If I made it and I hate it, I don't gotta eat it. That being said, ruining food so I won't go and eat it just smacks of eating disorder logic. If I don't want to eat something, I'll throw it away, not pour salt all over it.

    @@chenny8738 For me it is honouring the whole process of growing and processing food. So what if the recipe didn't turn out great? Unless something really aweful happend, like burning it or using soap powder instead of flour, I can eat it. It won't kill me even if I don't like it too much. Leftovers make nice meals. Why should they be spoiled or destroyed??? It's about being mindful with your food. Train yourself. We seem to be heading for food shortages and price hikes. It soon might not be a matter of linking but a matter of availability and affordability.

    Try having cats. When we had cats, we couldn't sit down to eat without 3 pairs of eyeballs staring... and staring... and STARING... until we gave in and fed them treats off our plates. They got half our dinner.... then we got hernias carrying them to the vet for their checkup. Plus crushed ribs when they slept on us. Well, at least no one ever accused us of UNDERfeeding our cats.

    I guess I'm too innocent haha I actually thought the mirror was to simulate eating with company so you'll eat slower and enjoy it more instead of scarfing it down in front of the TV. I pictured it as a candle light dinner dinner with yourself...

    I think it's risky honestly. Doesn't sound healthy. You should be able to enjoy food, even if you are trying to lose weight.

    @@lailay2001 thank you so much :D I mostly just eat what I like. But I count calories. I typically stay around a calorie intake of 2000 cal per day (which is dependent on the amount of exercise I do that day).

    I've had an eating disorder for quite some years and I'm so afraid a good amount of those tips remind me of the "pro-anorexia tips". It's really scary how these so called healthy tips can make anyone spiral into an ed or disordered eating really fast. Take care guys and be careful

    for sure !! the pipeline into disordered eating is such a slippery slope. I also fell into it for a long time, and because of the abundancy of "dieting tips" (which are truly pro-ana tips), its become increasingly difficult to find reliable information that won't re-introduce those bad habits. It's super important to check your information numerous times when it comes to health advice especially

    I'm a recovering bulimic and I used to have anorexia a couple years ago but I have long recovered now but like this comment means the world to me because the amount of trending weight loss tiktoks and stuff are all pro ana and it's horrible because young people are watching them and they think because they don't weigh 7 stone and because they have thighs that get bigger when they sit down they think they're overweight when really they're completely average if not already slightly underweight really! No one needs to lose weight unless you really want to and you're at a safe weight to do so or you really need to for medical purposes... I just wish that people didn't confuse healthy eating with weight loss eating...

    Exactly. Don’t starve yourself to be healthy. If you don’t have any bad side effects and have a good amount of movement every so often that works for you you don’t need to fast or anything just to be ‘pretty’ or what society deems as ‘healthy’ which is most certainly very flimsy.

    I believe I would like dr. Mike as a provider, except I live in California. No matter, I have a wonderful doctor myself who has been nothing but kind to me from day 1. I am very blessed to have both a doctor _and_ a dentist I _each_ think very highly of!

    My personal advice: - Don’t start too drastically, make small changes as you’ll be more likely to stick to it. - Find out what changes you can make that are easy and start with those. For example, I love exercising but hate dieting so it was pretty easy for me to go from a relatively sedentary lifestyle to going to the gym 4 days a week and having two “active recovery” (or walking to make it sound less fancy). It is a big jump but I did used to go to the gym in the past, until a relationship I was in got in the way. - Cut out the unhealthy snacks, replacing them with healthier snacks. My go to is fruit, and I honestly prefer it over other snacks such as chocolate. If dieting is hard, don’t even stress about it for the first few weeks, we can work on that after a couple weeks. - Cut out/reduce fizzy drinks, easy enough to do and makes a difference. - Don’t use the scales as your only method to measure progress, I’d personally advise taking photos of yourself, but don’t do it everyday as you probably won’t see progress daily. - Don’t hate yourself for messing up once. If you have one cheat meal or miss one gym session, don’t think “well now it’s not worth it so I can just eat more and exercise less”. This isn’t true, one missed session isn’t as bad as five, one cheat meal isn’t as bad at a cheat day. Get back to it. - Mix cardio and weightlifting, as stated in the video - Believe in yourself, you got this :)

    While the thing about the fizzy drinks is mostly true, one way around that for people who really particularly enjoys sodas is to learn how to make water kefir, pineapple tepache, and ginger ale or other sodas with a ginger bug. You are home fermenting your own drinks, _the yeast_ is eating the sugar, and you're getting a probiotic drink that costs pennies-on-the-dollar compared to _buying_ kombucha or something like that at the store. You would need to buy the grains for kefir and ginger to make a "ginger bug" for ginger ale or other "ginger bug" based sodas, but for pineapple tepache you don't need a starter culture for that. But you definitely get that bubbly drink at the end and you're putting something far better into your body then Coca-Cola or Sprite. _The Fermentation Adventure_ is a wonderful channel if you want to learn how to make that kind of stuff!

    My husband lost over 120 lbs by cutting his carbs and increasing his meat & vegetables. We went on the same diet, he lost 60lbs and I put on 12lbs. Moral of the story; what works for one may not work for all.

    Following a good diet is only one part of the story. Aside from genetics, the amount of exercise you do is also very important. We all follow the rules of thermodynamics.

    I think in the end is mostly about calories in and calories out. If you have a lower resting metabolism and he has higher, even if you eat the same amount/calories, he might be in a deficit and you don't. But also, if you weight lift, you might lose fat and gain muscle (which is good) and therefor gain pounds because muscle is heavier than fat. It depends on many things.

    It's all about calories. What needs to be individualized is the ''way'' to get there and eat less calories. Adherance at the end of the day is the key. First the calories and macros are calculated, then a meal plan individualized for that person's needs, wants, lifestyle is created that fits those macro and micronutrient intake goals. That's it. People get different results on diets because their calorie intake and expenditure changes as well as their adherence to it. Food is not magic and the body cannot escape the laws of thermodynamics

    Vegetables are mostly carbs, btw. I think when people say "cutting carbs" what they really mean is cutting sugar. As for him losing/you gaining, it's all about calories in/calories out. Science has shown again and again it's not what you heat but how much you eat VS how much you burn. So if two people are eating the same diet but one of them is burning, say 25%-75% more calories, then the one burning more calories will lose the weight. Plus, men tend to be bigger than women (height/weight) and so they tend to burn more calories just from that. There are many online calculators where you can estimate how many calories you burn based on your sex, age, weight, height, and activity level, and then you need to plan your caloric intake around that. When I lost over 120lbs. I did it by consistently eating 500 calories less than what I (conservatively) burned in a day.

    Dentist here, Snacking often can reduce your mouth's pH which can lead to tooth decay. If you really need to snack switch to healthy snacks like celery, carrots etc.

    As someone who works for a non-profit that helps rescue food and delivery it to people in need, the comment about intentionally spoiling and ruining food truly brought tears to my eyes. I can't believe anyone would do that knowing how Manu people are struggling to feel their families and children.

    It’s not as much of a thing as you think… I used to do this at restaurants all the time (not at home because I could just put it away). But when you’re sitting at a restaurant for another 20 minutes after eating… I’d rather ruin the french fries than keep snacking on them when I’m no longer hungry.

    Probably, a better bit of advice is to practice good portion control before cooking the meal. The goal is never to have leftovers.

    What a nice video. Those tips are hilarious. Here is the best tip: Do any kind of workout and watch what you eat. Its simple as that. If you are lazy like me and you dont want to count calories get yourself cheapest meal plan (I got one from Next Level Diet).

    Quitting sugar (completely), playing volleyball multiple times a week, and intermittent fasting are the only ways I can consistently keep my weight under control.. Some of my coworkers do weight watchers. That didn't work for me. We are all unique.. Love your videos..

    No idea if anyone will see this but here is how I lost quite a lot of weight: I planned my meals. At the beginning of the week I planned out exactly what I was going to eat every single day. And I only bought the ingredients for these meals (healthy meals of course). Nothing else. Trust me: Its WAY easier to not buy chips rather that to not eat them when they are already at home. I also only had two meals and a snack a day. Breakfast at 12:00 and dinner at 18:00. The snack was a plate with fruit and veggies. Yes. Sometimes I was a little hungry. But nothing terrible. And no matter what the weather was, I always went out on a walk for 30-60min. With this method I lost about 20kg in 4 months. Are they faster ways? Probably. But this one worked for me. All the others didn't cause I couldn't stick to them.

    I'm glad it worked for you...but you should never be on any type of "diet" that leaves you feeling hungry. And only 2 meals + 1 snack a day?? Spread the meals out throughout the day. Smaller portions, but more meals.

    @@jesse5658 Just like Dr. Mike said, everyone is different. Some people need smaller meals and snacks throughout the day, some people only need 2 or three full meals. It depends on many factors. Also we don't know how bad OP's "hunger" was, it could have just been "cravings" that lessened as time went on and they lost more weight. I agree that you shouldn't restrict yourself to the point where you're always feeling hungry, but I wouldn't assume that more than 2-3 meals is what's best for OP.

    Even if you don't want to finish food you can always share it with a family member or roommate! If I make a whole tray of brownies i share with my roommate bc I only want a few and don't want to waste the rest

    I'm working on losing weight for health reasons. This is really helpful for me, as there are a LOT of tips out there that - for someone like me - leads to more disordered eating. I'll definitely be talking to my doctor about some of these.

    Biggest tip I have as someone who is overweight and losing weight is this- Serve your plate then put your leftovers away before you eat. This makes it more effort to go back for seconds, and that minimal amount more effort might deter you from having another plate. This small change of putting the leftover away before I eat instead of after i eat has been GAMECHANGING for me personally.

    I don't think this advice was referencing leftovers in your fridge. I've been in the situation many times in a restaurant where it didn't make sense to take leftovers or there wasn't enough to justify the container, but where I was full after eating most but not all of the meal. However, I typically will nibble at the extras if the wait for the check is long enough. I could definitely see the value of putting salt on the rest to shore up my self-control. Haha. No one should be passing off their leftover saliva-contaminated meal to the hungry, especially in a pandemic.

    @@Daaaanielle, how exactly are you going to get them your leftovers? It's been widely debunked that you need to finish your plate because others...somewhere...are hungry. That creates an unhealthy relationship with food. (Google "clean plate club" for the ample research that this isn't healthy for kids.)

    @@Daaaanielle I agree that food waste is awful but I think a lot of people are misunderstanding your sentiment. It's about recognizing the value of your food instead of discarding it and if you have leftovers, eating those as a meal when you would have instead purchased more food to make something else. We tend to view it as "Other people are hungry somewhere so we shouldn't waste food" when it doesn't make sense that your half-eaten spaghetti would help those people. But valuing food and saving it for later saves money that could one day help you be in a financial situation to help those less fortunate.

    I really appreciate Dr. Mike looks at information like weight loss tips and explains it in simple terms to where everyone can understand and go on to explain he agrees or disagrees with it in detail. I've spoken to a lot of people who will speak on topics they believe so strongly about, but they can't tell me exactly why they believe or disagree with it. And it's really refreshing to hear someone really know what they're talking about and be able to consider/explain both sides of an argument without anger or bias. No fear mongering or anger but facts that he's dedicated time learning. Thank you for what you do Dr. Mike. You're very appreciated

    I’m so glad to hear you admitting that intermittent fasting for some people might lead to disordered eating, especially if you’ve had any kind of eating disorder it’s very dangerous to start restricting yourself. Doesn’t matter if you had BED since if you’ve never gotten the underlying psychological factors for WHY you were overeating sorted it’s very possible to go from that to only eating once or twice A WEEK. Sure you might not be able to get diagnosed as an anorexic since you started out morbidity obese but it doesn’t really matter that much. You’re starving yourself, thinking one apple is enough for that day when you’re eating because your brain is malnourished A healthy mindset is the main key to loosing weight in a healthy way, so no don’t be disgusted by the food that nourishes both mind and body, but for a lot of people it doesn’t start with a diet when they finally go on a SUCCESSFUL weight loss journey, it’s having gotten their head in the right place before they are ready for it

    As someone who is decently-severely physically disabled, I'd love to see you make a video about ways to exercise when moving is painful. Edit: for those of you saying "swimming" while it is an excellent idea, and thank you so much, it's not easy for many of us disabled people to get out of the house. I should have added that to the criteria for the exercises in the first place. I apologize for not being more specific. ♡

    I agree, when simply going for a short walk leaves you in increased pain and fatigue for days afterwards, it is difficult to find a way to exercise safely and at an amount that is beneficial.

    Swimming, even just staying in a pool for as long as you can tolerate, is great exercise. Have you considered an upper-body wheel? They're like stationary bikes, but for your arms. And, like so many other things, it's really going to depend a lot on your exact circumstances.

    I started intermittent fasting in January 2021 and the added Noom in June 2021. As of the beginning of September 2021, I have lost 40 pounds. My husband and I also starting ordering meal kits from Every Plate. That has been a huge boost for us because, instead of picking up fast food every night, we are cooking healthy meals. I even have a serving left over to take to work for lunch the next day. I still need to get better about exercising, but I made lots of small changes to my activity levels. At work, I take the stairs instead of the elevator. I park at the end of the store parking lots. I do my best to get in at least 250 steps each hour. I was really glad to see that you did the video. It put some of my successes and setbacks in to a bit of perspective. Thank you.

    Wow, brings back memories. 3rd lunch was awful! Sometimes we got 10 minutes to eat; a couple of times, they gave us late passes because lunch was almost over by the time we were served. I remember the tardy bell rang one of those times before I could even sit down. 15 years later, still catch myself eating meals too quickly from time to time.

    Same. Lunches were over so fast that I also trained myself to eat as fast as I could. We got 15 minutes. And recess was after lunch! So the faster we finished, the sooner we could go out and play. Ridiculous :/

    I’ve known a lot of people who tell me they want to lose weight but don’t know how much. The secret to getting to that healthy weight and maintaining it is to change the types of food they are eating and a bit of exercise, that’s all. There is no magic supplement to reduce weight and always know what the weight should be according to the person’s height.

    I found noom really overwhelming. There was so much information that I couldn't retain it all. I fell off the wagon hard, pretty early on. It didn't work for me, and it's pretty expensive. Just something to consider. I'm glad it works for a lot of people though.

    I did Noom a couple of years ago with positive results, and I'm doing it again because my lifestyle changed drastically (COVID, marriage, birth control, new job, over 25 now) and I needed an updated approach, which it has been helping me with. All that to say, I'm seeing the updated Noom vs old Noom, and one of those options is deciding how much time you want to dedicate per day to the lessons. I chose the 5-8 minute bracket, but there's also 2-5, 8-10, 10-12, and even 1-2, you can change it at any time.

    I was on it for 14 months and didn’t lose a thing. My coach kept giving me advice on how to tweak it, even suggesting I go below 1,000 calories a day long term??? But I finally got diagnosed with PCOS and realized I’m insulin resistant. I ditched Noom, started intermittent fasting. It took four months to reverse my insulin resistance, but have been losing about a pound a week since then. It turns out I’d pretty much been doing everything right! I just couldn’t get past the insulin resistance to burn fat stores, so I’d never seen results. If it wasn’t for intermittent fasting I’d have had to go on a diabetes drug to trick my body. I’m so glad I went ahead and tried IF first instead of just thinking I wasn’t doing things well enough! Plus, scheduled eating is free, but pills and injections aren’t! 😅

    Pro-tip from someone who lost about 100 pounds of excess fat: Don't just cut away the foods you love, learn how to consume them in moderate amounts that doesn't ruin your weight. I absolutely love potato chips, when I was morbidly obese I would consume one or two bags every day. When I lost the weight, I didn't eat chips at all during that time, but my craving for them persisted. That resulted in having a relapse into my old ways, and I again at a bag a day for a couple of months until I got my mojo back and went back to healthy eating. What I learned from that was to find a way to satisfy that craving, so I allowed myself to eat ONE bag every 7 days, it didn't matter when I ate it but after eating it I had to wait a full 7 days before I could eat another. I've been doing that for over a year, and it works really well.

    I'll buy moderately high end versions of the treats I like. This way my natural stinginess (and frankly, restricted income) helps me control the size and frequency of portions I consume, how much I buy, and even plan beforehand what I'll have and under what circumstances. It also makes me appreciate each bit more, therefore be more mindful of what I'm having, and steers me away from the very bad no-good habit of having treats out of boredom and/or anxiety.

    I think the best advice instead of "getting used to feeling hungry" would be to learn the difference between hunger and cravings. Being hungry means your body needs energy. Cravings mean you want to eat food just because it is tasty but you don't really need it. If at the end of the day you feel pizza hungry you're not hungry, you're craving

    Cravings can be an indication of insufficient nutrients, so learning to interpret the cravings is just as important as differentiating between hunger and cravings. I personally go on a craving rampage if I let myself get dehydrated. And of course something I'm an idiot and forget that specifically dehydration triggers that and will let myself do this craving rampage for a few hours

Dramatic but it helps me realize that I'll be fine if I don't have it and should have some water instead. As well as understanding that certain foods hurt my stomach so telling myself " eating that slice isn't worth the stomach ache, have something else".

    Hey Dr. Mike! Here’s a question for you: I’m type 1 diabetic and I’ve heard contradictory claims about weight loss with diabetes. Have you heard anything that suggests that weight loss is more difficult with diabetes? I’ve heard both sides, that it can be harder and that it can be the same as for non-diabetics. Another thing I’m curious about because I’ve never been able to pull it off myself is this: is intermittent fasting a healthy thing for someone with type 1 diabetes to do? When I go for too long without a meal I’ve seen my blood sugar go down, but I’ve also seen it go up, and I’m not sure what would cause that. I know glycogen formation and breakdown plays a role in blood sugar maintenance, but I don’t know how it comes in to play when the body is fasting.

    @@DoctorMike Thank you for mentioning Noom. This is the kind of weight loss, workout and nutrition resource I’ve been needing in my life. As soon as finances allow, I will absolutely be signing up for it. I’ve had lots of questions about planning my own weight loss routine, but am too busy to be able to talk with my doctor (plus, I work night shifts, so I’m always asleep when my doctor’s office is open) so Noom seems like it will allow me to have access to a personalized and customized resource that I can access with any spare minute or two I can find throughout my day.

    I loved HIIT when I did it last year but I did it so intensely and often that I injured my ankles (probably bad posture too) and to this day my ankles hurt from any physical activity, even walking which never used to happen 😭 happy I'm doing pilates now tho 😁

    The average diameter of plates in the US has increased several inches in the past 60 years. Our regular dinner plates are too wide for kitchen shelves from the early 1900s.

    I watched an episode of Secret Eaters... they did an experiment on 2 groups, with different sized plates at an all you can eat buffet (participants didn’t know about the experiment). The group with the smaller plate, ate much less (I can’t remember the exact %)

    Glad to see we're in agreement about Noom! I started with it in October 2020, and am down a very healthy 70 lbs. I've lost weight successfully before, but this is the first time I've really felt like I changed my lifestyle for the better in a sustainable way. Hopefully in another year I'll still be rocking these new habits!

    Try fruit smoothies. Generally fruit has a lot of calories and smoothies are easy to prep (frozen fruit works best for smoothies) and and is easy on the stomach. Another tip is to have high calorie veggies in the fridge to snack on (think roasted sweet potato and butternut squash). I tend to snack while I cook or read. Final tip is to eat some nut butters or cheeses with some meals (like peanut butter on apples, cheese and crackers). The fat from the nuts and dairy keeps you full for longer, but is a healthier way to increase calories if used in moderation. Honestly, I feel the best way to diet (for whatever reason) is to learn how to cook healthy meals. Healthy is different for different people. I know cooking takes time to learn, but the best way is to choose one versatile method (smoothies, oven roasting) and making a bunch of stuff with the method. Eventually you find your favorites that you can make on autopilot and meal prep for. Hope this helps.

    I work in an ED service. In our service, where the primary cause of low weight is low nutritional intake, we recommend patients to weight restore by increasing nutritional intake very gradually to avoid developing refeeding syndrome. We would also recommend regular blood tests to monitor your risk of refeeding syndrome, especially serum phosphate. Supplements (especially thiamine) can also help reduce the risk. I would recommend working with a dietician to make sure that you increase your intake very gradually and in a way that works for you. If the reasons for undereating are psychological (such as an eating disorder, sensory issues, PTSD, anxiety, etc) I would recommend speaking with a mental health professional. This is of course assuming your low weight is due to low food intake. Other causes such as hyperthyroidism would need to be assessed by a medical professional.

    Yes, the high intensity low intensity workout. I live in an area where most outdoor running routes (those that don't hit a stop light every block or two where you have to just stop constantly) are very hilly, so on a good circular route, there are periods of high intensity (going up a hill) followed by lower (either flat or going downhill). I have found that, when adjusting to a new, more intense route, even if going up a long, steep hill that leaves me wiped out, if I can get through the next 30 seconds of level or downhill track, my breathing will return to normal and I can go on, and once that occurs without too much hassle, I start to sub in the next level of intensity, never all at once (that can lead to injury), but sub in once a week of the harder route at first, then twice, then do it every time (3-4 a week). If you have to run indoors, either on a treadmill or an elliptical (which is better in many ways as long as it's well maintained), you can apply the same principle, you'll just have to program it in.

    It's true when I eat something delicious and have more calories, so I wouldn't eat too much. But when I eat something I don't like, I would like to distract myself. I am a picky eater, I dislike peppers, tomatoes, potatoes, beet, lettuce, radish, every form of nuts, fresh water fishes, beef, and pig products. So I would eat them while being distracted. If you ask me what I like, I like chicken skin, deep fried and then sauted with salted egg sauce.

    Last year I ate so much but so much junk food that I finally hit the "Obese" in BMI chart. After I started fasting, EVERYTHING got so, SO much better. I'm drinking more water and also drink coffee before doing exercises in the morning. Not only I lost 10kg since february but by my blood exams, everything is alright. I'm pretty sure if I had blood exams last year I would be SCREWED.

    @@pinkflower1076 As someone in ED recovery rn, I can tell you I completely understand how you feel, but 500 calories a day is NOT enough sis! Feeling fat is one of the worst feelings for someone with an ED, and you'll likely feel full faster bc your stomach shrunk, but recovery is worth it! It sucks at first (and over a year into it too sometimes) but being able to live a life not dominated by food and shame is what you deserve!

    Amanda - Anorexia, or anorexia nervosa? Those are two completely different things that most people don't realize are different. Just plain anorexia means literally nothing more than "lack of appetite", and that can be caused by all sorts of different things. Anorexia nervosa is the eating disorder.

    I used to be really fat. I was on the verge of developing serious health conditions. I remember not being able to tie my shoelaces and my sleep suffered as well. My life changed when I finally set my mind to the thinking that anything is possible if you decide so. I took a meal plan to start with. I created it online, on dietarize, which was super helpful to me. I didn't have to worry about calories, macros, nutrients and all that stuff, I just focused on walking long distances and exercising after I got on a level where I could do some simple workouts. I hope my story will inspire you to do the same. To change your body you must first change your mind!

    My biology teacher also talked about how to lose weight. She said "DONT STARVE YOURSELF. It won't help you, instead its important to eat the *right* kind of food. The right fat etc." I personally knew this already since my mother is in the medical field, but I know it helped so many people from my class.

    The wording of 'don't starve yourself' is wrong in itself because starving is not a choice. What is a choice is fasting and it has a lot of health benefits, even if its 'just intermittent'.

That usually result in malnutrition, lack of energy, fainting, etc. Fasting is a healthier way of doing it, with the purpose of cleansing your body and it's more of/ has started as a cultural thing, I believe

    The small container thing was a game changer for me, not because of the psychology of the empty bowl but because of the psychology of the FULL bowl. I'd look at it and think 'that's a whole bowl of [whatever]'. I almost never filled it back up.

    Agreed. I’m so sensitive to caffeine now that I can only have drip coffee once a week with a BIG breakfast, otherwise I get panic attacks. I made the mistake of having coffee while fasting, NEVER AGAIN.

    Yes, as someone who is caffeine sensitive and anaemic, coffee leaves me feeling terrible with tachycardia throughout the day and dizziness. I stopped drinking coffee two years ago and it was the best decision I made for my health.

    I personally can vouch for the "smaller plates" advice. I'm still overweight, but I was about a year ago almost obese and using our bit smaller plates really helped me to lose weight (+10 kg with some exercise). I think it was for me more like I was filling my plate as much as possible so I don't need to go to get a refill, and then forcing me to eat myself full because I didn't want to leave any leftovers. Using a smaller plate helped me to have a more reasonable portion and I wasn't getting any refills even though I knew I was eating less. I also want to say thanks to Mike, I have got a lot of information and I have tried to get better relationship with food and exercise for losing weight. I hope you sometime continue your Nutrition 101 series!

    I think the issue is when the recommendation is "you need to lose weight". It can trigger a lot of people who have been trying to lose weight all their life. It's more about the way of talking then the goals he's looking for. If doctors take a lighter approach with maybe talking about recipes and what would be a good sized meal and how that can benefit colesterol levels among other things without mentioning weight I think it makes a huge difference for someone that has been struggling with the scale number for years.

    Sara Girão Holm Well, he gives advice on how to lose weight; he doesn’t just say “lose weight.” Some bad doctors might do that, but Dr. Mike’s channel doesn’t. Also, if a bad doctor just said, “lose weight” without giving any advice or details, that doesn’t make them “fat-phobic”; it just makes them a bad, uncommunicative, and non-understanding doctor.

    @@rayanrahmani9838 I've seen videos where he talks about recommending patients to lose weight. I think that's where the Reddit thread actually started from. I'm not saying he is wrong for wanting a better life for his patients just the way he fraises it can be better when dealing with people that have eating disorders or have tried to lose weight all their life. That's why I say make it about the goals and not the scale number. One can be in normal BMI weight and still have bad health numbers. It's not a perfect correlation.

    Some thirty years ago I once met a man who had just lost a huge lot of weight by eating nothing but (dark?) chocolate and fruits. Yes, I am serious. His energy level was unbelievable. I still wonder whether he died of a heart attack after doing that to his body.

    Yeah, it’s true. Pretty funny as i’ve noticed that every year my mom cooks less and less food for everyone to eat. Everyone still gets nice and full, and she has to do less cooking 😄. I still eat less than everyone and it’s just because I don’t wanna feel bloated after eating lmao.

    Great video! Easy to understand! I do not meal prep for the week but I do cook once and eat for 2-3 days. That helps me stay focused on the goal.

    What helped me drastically was that I weighed my food on a scale and in doing so, I learned what was an actual portion size versus what I was serving myself. Using an app I was able to estimate how many calories I consumed in a day, too. Lost weight just doing that, but, exercise is important. You won't SEE results until you lose 10 to 20lbs. You'll feel it first. Also, sugar is my worst enemy and still is to this day. I've regained 20lbs and it's been so discouraging.

    Yea on average you’ll lose about 1% a week to be in a healthy weight loss, obviously works out to 1.8 a week, however don’t be discouraged if you lose a little less than that, but do what makes you feel healthy if you feel yourself getting weak eat a bit more and consult with your doctor if you’re losing a lot of weight over a little time, most sustainable way to lose weight is gradually after all, but be healthy and have fun doing it

    I was told to limit distraction to focus on how much your eating. Also, eating slowly can let you know when you are full. (I have found that most of the points I focus on help a lot.)

    Well, I reduced snacking after I put the bathroom scales in front of the refrigerator. It might sound cruel, but it made me overthink my eating habits before opening the refridgerator repeatedly. It works for me, but it's surely not an good option for everyone.
