Do Calories Matter? Is a Calorie a Calorie? (Science of Weight Gain)

This video describes why calories gives you only a small slice of the picture for understanding weight loss. The body is constantly changing its operations to maintain homeostasis, and the food you take in has a drastic effect on these operations- the operation of hormones in particular.
I made another video on calories before that I feel fell short in a couple ways, so I thought it was important to give it another shot. It's really hard to dig in and properly understand health if you are operating off the idea that calories are (most) significant for weight management.

"Fat Chance" - amzn.to/2sKqyZR
"The Calorie Myth" - amzn.to/2sbbMhM
[BLINKIST] Blinkist is an app I've been using lately to discover new books and review the ones I've already read. It gives you the key points in text or audio form from tons of different non-fiction books. Since I'm always going through so many books to get these done, it's very useful to get me exposed to more concepts beforehand to know if it's worth my time to buy and read through that particular book. Check it out through the link above.

One thing I really should have clarified near the start: ★The muscle burning I talked about occurs if you reduce the amount of food you're taking in without significantly reducing carbohydrates. That is, gluconeogenesis (burning muscle for fuel) presents itself when you restrict calories without modifying the composition of your diet. So a ketogenic diet or simply fasting would not result in the muscle wasting.

Incorrect info in the beginning, you're body does not eat itself. Why would your body store fat in case of an emergency(less calories) and when that time comes then eat it's own muscle! Bro science. Your body only eats its own muscle once you reach around 5% body fat. Your muscle may get a little smaller but it's not being used up like the video states.

If you follow the food pyramid, you'll get hungry the way described in the video with leptin and insulin. It also has too little meat. The moment the FDA changed the pyramid from high meat to high carb, obese increased in the US. The fact that you're powerlifting is MUCH more important than reducing carbs. If you exercise, the calorie in out strategy is easier to maintain, because there is a significant output.

The simplified version is that calorie counting isn't a great way to lose weight, and that you should pay attention to the macronutrient composition of the food you eat. In particular, you should avoid high carbohydrate food because eating too much of it will disrupt your blood sugar regulation by increasing the production of insulin - and too much insulin will result in insulin resistance, which has the effect of slowing down your fat metabolism and making you feel constantly tired and hungry.

Hearing this statement, ". . . . but what I'm discussing is Fructose, technically a carbohydrate not necessary for *any* biochemical reaction in the body . . . ", I thought of the book I read over 35 years ago, "Sugar Blues" by William Dufty. This book essentially said just that and was a revelation for me. How could your body possibly run at peak performance if you are constantly fueling it with something that it has no use for?! I never really kicked my habit for white sugar but I did enough experimenting to know that I felt energetic and alive when I managed to stay off of it. But the eye opener here is the rest of the statement from WIA: that the constant and increased ingestion of fructose does not only promote fatty liver disease but that it causes insulin resistance. This is huge. The message is clear: A calorie is *not* a calorie and we have an obesity pandemic because of so many people don't realize that sugar is indeed toxic.

As you said: *we have an obesity pandemic because so many people don't realize that sugar is indeed toxic.* -This hits the nail on the head. +Asura (Re: HSL knockout mice gaining less weight) TBH this was a confusing example to use, and the mechanism by which a lack of HSL prevents fat accumulation. (As the study referenced explains, hormone sensitive lipase is "the chief enzyme responsible for the mobilization of FFA from adipose tissue, i.e., lipolysis...") ■While that piece of information sounds counterintuitive, the point was to show how modifying hormones can drastically change the way your body stores fat. The conclusion from the study: "HSL null mice display defective lipolysis due to diminished expression of lipases and lipid droplet-associated proteins, reduced quantities of WAT with increased amounts of BAT, increased numbers of macrophages in WAT, are resistant to high-fat diet induced obesity secondary to an apparent increase in thermogenesis and energy expenditure, and have multiple alterations in the expression of genes involved in adipose differentiation, including transcription factors, markers of adipocyte differentiation, and enzymes of fatty acid and triglyceride synthesis." Stating that the body prefers to burn muscle rather than fat when in a calorie deficit is very misleading. If you consume an adequate amount of protein and do even a minimal amount of strength training, your body will preserve muscle and will prefer to burn fat on any reasonable deficit. There have been many studies over the years that show this. The body does not want to lose muscle, unless you are a very sedentary individual, are losing too quickly (i.e., are on a crazy calorie deficit), and/or have a very low body fat percentage to begin with (i.e.,

interesting how, the body would use more useful things like muscle as a replacement for energy instead of using up the fat storage. But how does this affect people who try to do the "water diet" where they go on days - weeks (one British youtuber on 23 days) eating/drinking nothing but water. Looks like some extreme version of the Kenogenic diet of no carbs and force the body to use the fat storage or is there more to it. Sure if one tries to do any diet while the body will burn the muscle instead of the fat. Wouldnt doing mild weight exercises tell the body to KEEP the muscles and to burn other energies like fat instead.

I should've known you made a video about this already :) Thanks for your research. I came around today making a video about basically the 2 different modes of Keto: either higher protein which ends up being calorie deficit or higher fat (and limited glucogenic macros, both carbs and protein) which takes advantage of the hormonal advantage of not spiking insulin. I will make sure to link to this in my video descritpion too for further infos, thank you!

I’ve been on a ketogenic diet for a year. On and off I’ve been doing a 3k calorie a day consumption for a week. I’ve been losing weight during that process and I believe it’s carbs which produce the fat storing hormones.

Not true. Caloric surplus of any kind makes u gain weight. Nothing to do with carbs specifically. Keto doesnt posess any magical fat burning property. Losing weight is= caloric deficit. You can eat table sugar and be in deficit and lose weight. Eat twinkies

He did suggest that a diet high in fiber and low in sucrose will help lower insulin levels, curb hunger and increase energy expenditure. Muscle use prioritizes burning fat before muscle since your body thinks you need it due to the constant stimulation. This diet is in favor of cheese so i'm very happy. Just gotta get more fiber in me.

Ximena de la Serna they say fasting helps. I don’t know how much I agree only because I have to fast sometimes due to a bowel disorder. Once I trigger an episode, I usually can’t eat anything without extreme pain. This can last a month or more. A 2 day fast helps reduce the inflammation enough that I can eat normally (for me) again. But I feel and look so unwell when it’s over. It appears to do some damage. I don’t know

I used a calorie deficit, ate a lot more protein, but also a lot less carbs. I also got more fat than usual. but I could easily stick to about 16-1900 calories, and still eat about 180 grams of protein. That exchange along with weight training allowed me to lose a lot of fat without losing muscle, and even building muscle at the same time. not even newbe gains.

I need to drink lots of water due to a blood pressure condition but I take potassium supplements & also crack some pink Himalayan salt into my water. Locks hydration into the cells without bloating like regular table salt. When you have lots of water it is definitely advisable to actively restore these electrolytes as yes you will create an imbalance withing your body.
