Are Bears' coaches ruining Justin Fields? | Parkins & Spiegel

Спорт

Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy called only one designed run for quarterback Justin Fields in the team's 38-20 loss to the Packers on Sunday. Danny Parkins was baffled by the decision and wondered if the Bears coaching staff is stunting Fields' development.

Fields will do as he is told. Which is exactly what he has to do. Come on! They made him a 1st year QB who had to learn about the NFL himself. Then, two years of not much to support him on the field. Finally, we come to 2023. There MAY be some great talent on the Field to do what Fields needs to be done, but the bottom line is, they can't. THIS Sunday, even the announcers were totally sympathetic: what he has, hasn't been allowed to develop WITH Fields, and frankly, the play calling sucked (forgive me, but how else can you say it?) For the first time, there is a fleeting glimpse of Fields realizing what this season looks like, and it is NOT PRETTY. I followed Justin at Ohio State. I have seen him overcome 24 PT deficits in less time than it takes to play a quarter of football. He is a remarkable young man: he has spirit, motivation, and unbelievable skills, as well as an unparalleled commitment to a city (Chicago) and Faith in a developing team. After 3 years, you would think that management would get that, but it seems like they are determined to suck all the greatness out of him and turn him into something he is not, and NOT what Chicago needs right now. Where are his explosive plays and unbelievable long passes that are right on target? Management better wake up and realize that they GOT what they needed and don't need to destroy the best thing to come Chicago's way in ages. I only hope that the citizens in Chicago understand what is happening and demand what the Bears management promised Fields: a team built around this man's remarkable skills that can become Super Bowl challengers with the right decision makers. Justin Fields -- about the nicest guy you will ever meet -- doesn't deserve this.

Okay is it's a run to anywhere but that side, but those happened on _pass plays._ The pressure wasn't coming _through_ the o-line, it actually looked like the Bears deliberately allowed Fields to get sacked. Do you think _Fields_ designed a pass play that leaves rushers unblocked? It's as if the OC has an insurance policy on Fields or that they think they can play footsie with the o-line, that pockets aren't necessary aspects of them. Instead of the bears trying to be competitive last year, and always trying to play teams close to the vest, they should’ve continued to develop Justin Fields ability as a pocket passer. Idk what it is with the bears never allowing their qbs to make mistakes when they’re young and coach up those mistakes. The fans and coaches become afraid to put the game in the qbs hand because they fear that they’ll make a mistake, but other organizations let their qbs make mistakes at 22, 23, 24 years old, so when they’re 26, 27 years old they’re better because they learned from their mistakes.

Off season was about Getsy’s system and week 1 shows it. Another lesson that Getsy would be wise to take note of. Nagy's downfall was his insistence to run "his offense" vs running what worked with the talent he was given vs the talent of other teams. ITs always a chess match and the bears coaches just cant ever seem to get right. This team has talent, but the coaches want to mold the talent into running the offense they have in mind even if it is not suited to the players they have and they cant get the players they want.

You guys do realize, for years the PPF has the line graded pretty much last every year. All you have to do is look at the horizontal game plan. Screen after screen, what's that tell you? If your so inept in protection, that you have to focus and scheme around your wretched offensive line and run screens.. your screwed. 35 pressure's, you have to understand that plays especially intermediate to deep passes take time to develop. I mean I guess I'm missing something here....

Getsy is a complete clown and Eberflus is putting a lot of the blame on Fields but HIS team was not ready or prepared. His team is not coached well. I mean, this is exactly what Fields was in college, so I'm really not sure what the shock is here. He's a big guy who has great mobility, otherwise, he relied on an excellent run game and some of the best WRs in all of college to basically be leaps above most competition. He didn't need to truly develop because his WR's and RB's were carrying the load again and again and all he had to do was launch passes, and once in a while scramble.

I'm with Parkins. It was the immediate thought I had when he continued to throw check down after check down. I think they beat him up for NOT taking them last year and now he wont consider running unless the check down isnt there. The problem is, the O line did not improve (yet). You have to freaking recognize that and go in a different direction. Justin Fields has NEVER been known as or referred to as a "running QB" until lady year. The guy is an athlete. Running is something he has in his bag, not what defines him as a QB. I think Getsy is the wrong guy for our offense (yet again) that is trying to salvage his job by neutering Fields because WE CANT FN PASS BLOCK. And Eberflus is just as clueless. I dont want him running too much either, but checking down all game is dumb. We've been through this already...

Chicago needs to coach to their players' strengths.

You guys are asking the Right Questions. Coming up with Likely Answers as well. Someone talked about Eberflus talking softly to Fields while Fields was catching punts in practice. Anyone wanna take guesses as to wtf any of that is about? 1) Why would Fields ever be involved in ANY of that? 2) The HC softly saying "good, you're doing good" is what? Talking down to him? Package this with the way the team has handled him like airport baggage handlers & I honestly think Fields has _tried_ to stick with their plans like a grown-up, but Bears' management & coaching are treating him like product, trying out "new" things & training him to Follow Orders like they don't think he's actually capable of thinking. & he's stuck taking this crap. The Bears' coaches _ARE_ at fault here. If you think Fields can't think on his own two feet, then you don't trade away your chance to draft a new QB. But they _did._ Imagine Fields being told by his coaches "you're our guy" then having them talk to you like you're a special needs kid in practice? Yeah, the coaches here are effed up. The fans will hate on the coaches for a while, but eventually they'll turn on Fields again. I wonder if the Giants want to trade for him? 😀 😅

It would also be nice if they stopped running 4-5 man routes and bring the blocking back in and even the tight end and run precision routes with Mooney and Moore. Justin needs to learn timing better and he will learn it with less routes being ran. It's either that or bring in Bagent and let him pick the Defenses apart. He was great at timing and making those quicker decisions.

Look, we certainly hope the Bears' coaching staff recognizes Fields' unique talents and will take fullest advantage of them. To that end, I agree that incorporating a few designed runs into the Bears' game plans would make sense. On the other hand, they drafted him to be a quarterback, not a running back. I don't see how they're "stunting Fields' development" by asking him to start looking like and performing like an NFL quarterback.

I don't think Justin has a problem seeing the field. What I do think is he still doesn't trust the idea of "NFL Open" enough. Go back and watch his OSU film. He isnt throwing into a lot of tight windows in college. I think he just doesn't see NFL Open as being open. He needs to trust his guys to contest and win. Trevor Lawrence threw a ton of picks his first year because he challenged what open means. Justin needs to test the idea of open more. INTs be damned.

@Chris-ey8zf you are justified in that belief. I'm willing to wait until the end of this season to make a final determination. But I definitely lean more "not the guy" because as you alluded to, this is year 3. Testing NFL Open should have happened year 1, year 2 at the latest. So he's either gun shy or his coaches suck worse than we think.

1 Ro Jo needs to be RB1. His pass and catching ability is to critical to remove him from the field. 2- stop putting him in the gun. Most of his positive plays we’re under center. 3- no play action. 4 stop playing zone against poor receiving cores. 5 - Alan Williams. Blitz 1st year QBs

I think this is a common issue where NFL QBing is a lot different than college QBing. There is a reason why the coaches don't trust him....proof is in the pudding. Plus a "running" QB doesn't make the other players happy always running routes just to block or look back and see their QB running.

They are. While Fields is not perfect by any means (AKA he doesn't see the field as well as we'd like), he has the tools to be a fine QB. However, we haven't invested enough in the OL and he clearly has gotten too trigger happy and holds on too long sometimes due to him not trusting himself and the players around him. I think the coaching staff is not helping in any way as they clearly don't trust him enough to sling it and that is hurting his own morale which is messed up. Most of this falls on coaching but at the end of the day, he isn't blameless and needs to be better as a player and leader.

Exactly if the offensive line, is really offensive and they can’t pass protect… Then call a few plays for Justin Fields to run the ball left or right… Power sweep, whatever… Get the defensive line to chase him so you can get a tight end or receiver open… it wasn’t just the lack of effort but it was the game planning and lack of thoughtfulness, as if they forgot what they did last year when they were scoring consistently. It’s very frustrating, it’s very hurtful because it’s the Packers but they have to do better and I believe they will learn from this huge debacle.
