Are Automatic Knives (Switchblades) Legal?

Ойын-сауық

Another question I get asked regularly.
The answer to this depends on you, what "privileges" you have, and where you live.

    People like to ask, "Why would you ever need one of those?" about a gun or a knife. I don't buy everything I have because I need it. I buy some stuff because I want it. Why would a knife have to be any different?

    I.m glad to know it's now legal in Texas. I am a woman with rheumatoid arthritis and it is hard for me to open a lot of knives. I had one that was easy to open that I loved and carried for years but it was seized when I lived in Wales. The UK has strict laws about locking blade knives I wasn't aware of. I have never found another since that I liked. Thanks for this review. It has given me some ideas.

    Interesting you brought up Texas (where I live). In 2015, they lifted switchblade (automatic knife) restrictions, and as of this month, Sep 1, 2017, even long blades like swords and knives over 5.5 inches can be open carried. It also removed restrictions on double edge knives STATE-WIDE!!! I love it. That means I can carry my Benchmade Infidel without risk. Also, this state law preempts local ordinance, which means no city can pass tighter laws than the state, and even if arrested for such an ordinance, you can't be prosecuted. This is a huge win for blade owners in a state that has historically had the most restrictive knife laws in the country for nearly its whole existence. There are location restrictions, so read the new code (schools, bars, churches are still a no-no for some of these blades). You are 100% correct on checking knife laws in one's home state (often county, city as well). Ridiculous as it is, many such violations constitute felonies, which should always be avoided.

    It has some vertical play. I think it fires so hard it bounces off the stop pin a little before the axis lock can slide into place. When you open it slowly it locks up rock solid.

    Good video. I'm trying to learn more about folding, locking, and spring assisted knives. so that I could add that knowledge in which I could start making knives other than fixed blade knives. Granted I mainly make larger outdoor and camp style knives so its almost a moot point and just something more likely to break. But it would be nice to be able to make more compact knives so that it wouldn't take up so much space.

    I don't know about the other 49 states in America but in Colorado switchblades and knives with blades over 3.5" in length are illegal which is bullshit in my opinion because I love switchblade stilettos and would love to carry an automatic instead of an assisted opening one. I don't really have a problem with assisted opening knives but I'd like to have my knife out and open in a flash if I need it for self defense.

    RideTheLightning80 Yeah, you'd better double check on that. MD has pretty good laws on owning, but carrying is another story. Also, they make it pretty hard to get a permit to carry a gun as well. Isn't that also the state that taxes it's citizens for the rain that falls?? I agree with the other poster, if you care about having more freedoms then I'd definitely move outta there.

    In Georgia switchblades are legal to own but not to carry. Three exceptions are: 1. law enforcement 2. active military and 3. oddly enough is people with only one arm. The legislature has ruled that a one armed person is entitled to carry a switchblade. I don't understand why spring assisted knives are legal and not switchblades. I know about opening it with the blade or pressing a button but they both open at basically the same speed. My Endura 4 opens just as fast and it's a manual knife.

    Hey I live on the border state of Illinois right next to Missouri. I want to get into knife collecting and want my first knife to be an all black switch blade. I only want to use the knife to only collect and maybe open a bag of candy. I won't even be carrying it with me. I heard in the state of Illinois it's illegal for some reason, but in Missouri it's not. What should I do. Since switchblades are crucial to knife collecting

    Prohibition era gangsters have nothing to do with anti-switchblade laws. In the 1950s, youth street gangs were problematic. Media began picturing these delinquents as greasy haired, leather wearing, knife wielding thugs and showing the switchblade knife, (the so-called "toy of death"), as their weapon of choice. Movies such as "Blackboard Jungle" and "12 Angry Men" are good examples of this stereotype. Against all logic, misguided media pundits, ignorant lawmakers and frightened, easily stampeded citizens went after the knives instead of the root problem, convincing the public that automatic knives were the culprit instead of the hands supposedly wielding them. (Sound familiar?) Thank goodness that attitude is changing and a useful tool is being brought out of the shadows and back into general use!

    I found a beautiful $300 auto a month ago and ran a lost and found add thinking it was legal here in Nevada and no one called. But now, a few minutes ago, I did some research and find that it's illegal. Brother! From what I read, cops are allowed to have them (here) and so I'd like to go to the local station and see if I can't get a couple of hundred bucks for the thing (without being arrested or having them take it from me). Gosh, it has a cool factor to it as it's of very high quality and I really don't wish to just toss it in the trash. Any suggestions??:-)

  • @bonesjones1658

    @bonesjones1658

    9 жыл бұрын

    If you dont wish to, then dont. Keep it, just never let it leave the house. Taking it to the station will mean you getting hassled about why its in "your possession", but probably not arrested. The knife would def be taken and either junked, or just kept by one of the cops there (thats prob most likely as they are allowed to have them) You def would not get away with selling it to them for money man.. thats just silly. You have to own something to sell it, you gonna sell something to police that's stolen? "Oh but I found it, and no one claimed it, so it's mine.." If it's yours enough to sell your gonna get in trouble. If it's not yours and you try to sell, your gonna get trouble. If you say you found it and no one claimed it and it's not yours they'll give you less trouble and take it off your hands. Keep it. Just dont carry it.

    I really hate Nj, be at the wrong place at the wrong time, and a Swiss Army Knife (non the less a "Tactical Folder") could get me arrested and it could be considered a Federal Offence, that could take away my right to bear arms. The laws here are so vague besides: No knives for the anything but utility, under 10inches, no autos, no ballistics, and no gravity knives (what ever they are supposed to be). I really will never be in a spot where my knife is in question, but it is a consideration
