I live in Maryland and my buddy was carrying an Ultratech and he was speeding on accident and he let the officer know he had a knife and he asked if he could see it. Short answer the officer asked, “Is that a Microtech???” He let him off with a warning.

Absolutely. The laws are from the types of people who carry them, nothing else. It’s no different than making baggy pants or tattoos illegal, all it does is give police reason to harass and persecute certain groups. If fisherman had adopted switchblades before Italian gangsters they’d be commonplace no doubt.

I think all restrictions on automatic knives need to be repealed. They were originally designed as legit tools with a utilitarian purpose. Fisherman would use them to cut their netting lines and women preferred them to avoid breaking their fingernails on slip joint nail nicks. IMO, the laws against them were largely based in racism. Latinos and Asians were known back then to carry and use autos and balisongs. It’s sad that even so-called “progressive” areas of the world insist on keeping such laws on the books because of nothing but misinformation and propaganda.

Totally agree with your POV on these type of knives. I live in Cali, where they decided a switchblade is only illegal if it’s blade is more than 2 inches long. It’s crazy to me how they can outlaw OTFs and side-opening automatics that are greater than 2” long yet they have no problem with assisted knives. Auto knives are not any more dangerous than manual ones. I can only hope that one day our lawmakers realize how stupid the 2” auto knife law is and do something to fix it. Seeing the progress made in other states gives me hope. Great video, I’m actually gonna show this to all my family members who give me that funky look when i deploy an OTF or other auto. Bought a lightning dagger otf and the first thing my roommate says is, "That is SO illegal!" "Not in Tennnesse" Never seen him so envious, so I got one for him too

My story about my OTF: I was in a college lab in Illinois (Legal to carry autos with FOID and are over 21, which I am) and I pulled out my dual action OTF and used it to open a box. Immediately a classmate said: "Isn't that illegal? You can't carry switchblades, they can stab people just with a button" I proceeded to put a piece of PAPER in front of the opening of my OTF. The knife failed to engage and got off the tracks. It couldn't fully penetrate a piece of paper with the actuation. He then said: "Ok, but it could open in your pocket. That's dangerous!" I then explained that with OTFs, you are working AGAINST the springs to open the knife, not being ASSISTED with them. OTFs are insanely useful for utility purposes and are not dangerous to an educated carrier. I really have no idea why OTFs are banned in some areas. I carry a Kershaw Emerson CQC-6k in my right pocket for self-defense purposes anyway. It's way faster to deploy than an OTF and much more reliable. Also 9:04 nice callback to the "Knives I don't hand to people" video. Got a good laugh out of me. Nice vid Metal Complex.

Once I got arthritis in my hands, auto knifes made a lot of sense. Opening a knife is painful and opening many packages are impossible. Even a bag of chips is a major task. You should get a auto knife when you join aarp.

The reason for the ban on "stilettos" (and by extension automatic knives) comes about after WW2 when lots of soldiers came back with souvenirs, especially from Italy. They got very common and kids ordered it. Moralistic people felt uncomfortable with people carrying these knives as toys so they made laws against them. Knowing that they where no more dangerous than other knives. Knowing that it was simply signal politics. They knew it was stupid to ban these knives but did it anyways because they had a moral animosity towards the spread of these toys/blades.

Yeah my understanding was the current ban was levied after Rebel Without a Cause came out and it depicted troublemakers using automatic knives. The fact is that this kind of ban is frivolous, fear mongering, and a political shel game.

I have a butterfly knife (and live in state where the only carry limit is 5” without a concealed carry permit) that I love but never carry simply due to public perception. Butterfly knives are another example of knives villified by the media. Butterfly knives were made to be tools. They were one of the earliest examples one handed opening knives designed for workers who needed to smoothly and quickly open their knives and then close them in very efficient movements. The other amazing strength of the butterfly knife is your hand is the locking mechanism and therefore it is extremely secure.

I just found out that 2 years ago, the now ex governor of Michigan made switchblades legal. So I just ordered a benchmade 9400 with overnight shipping and I'm pretty excited.

Gotta love good old NY...In this amazing bastion of logic, assisted knives by NY law are not switchblades. However, police and judges still consider them switchblades and will ruin peoples lives for them. Mind you I'm not talking about NYC which is even crazier when it comes to stupid knife laws, but upstate and western NY. A man in Buffalo got stopped and searched because he had a assisted pocketknife clipped to his pocket (In NY it is better to full pocket carry rather than clip it). Cop called it a switchblade and since he was not hunting or fishing but instead returning home from his construction job, gave the man a felony level ticket. Guy goes to court and the Judge after hearing that it doesn't meet the definition still upholds to the felony ticket the man was issued. last I knew he had appealed to the NYS supreme court and still lost. The ticket was issues in 2018 and I believe the appeal was lost last year sometime.

This is the type of stuff I refer to when I say New York knife laws are problematic. Whether the knife laws become stricter or lenient, I don't mind which. But the vague "grey areas" need to go!

Knives are not dangerous . Some people use knives to put other people in danger . My knife has never ran out my house and cut or stabbed anyone . Ever ! Not trying to correct you Complex just clarifying what you said for the sheep .

I wish we could have OTF's in the UK, especially Microtech's!

Yes, a brown man can be profiled as a scary brown man, agree to a canine search, have multiple knives and a rifle in the vehicle but still be on his way with a warning. It's all how you choose to react to authority.

This is why I'm glad I live in Wisconsin I can carry almost any size or style knife people need to learn and understand a knife is a (tool first,weapon 2nd) i do lawn care for living and carry a knife all of the time I love my cobra tec OTF I know its no microtech I also have 2 boker kalashnikov tanto's

You guys are lucky that you can carry knife even with some restrictions, in my country no-one can carry knife, even victorinox can be a problem. But still I carry my spyderco dragonfly 2 emerson everyday hahahaha

It's like with guns, there's just a general lack of knowledge with people who think knives are bad. Like a law biding citizen is going around committing crimes with their $500 Chris Reeve knife...Also like guns I think some knives give them all a bad rap. Even as a knife guy OTFs do look pretty murdery.

I carry my Italian Stiletto Switchblade with me everyday, haven't gotten any shit for doing so. I pulled one out right in front of a police officer to cut open my package, he didn't care whatsoever. He glaced at it like any other knife and minded his own business.

I really love automatic knives, got my first auto around 9 or 10 years ago and now own... alot... The only one kind of makes me nervous opening/closing is the Dalton assassin which is a double edge side opening auto with a 6 inch blade.

Here in Seattle you get in more trouble for owning a OTF than having a substantial amount of illegal substances. Why do they respect other’s expensive hobbies but not ours? At least we don’t need their free Narcan. And speaking of hobby, My neighbor who owns a shit load of guns told me I should be careful playing with knives. He said knives are more dangerous. I quietly laughed in my heart. We are good neighbors and he didn’t say it in a disrespectful way so I don’t want to laugh at his face. It’s true that I do cut myself sometimes but never have to go to the hospital for any of that.

Are they dangerous? Duh. Knives are dangerous. Should they be illegal? Why? Most manual tactical folders I can operate faster than switches.... and you know what deploys even faster from concealment? Fixed knives from your kitchen drawer. A steak knife is much faster than a balisong, OTF or a button... and a butter knife can be used as a stabbing weapon even without a sharp edge. It's almost like asking if pointed sticks should be banned.

Boston has a 2.5” blade limit never mind autos. I have a MT LUDT but not into autos at all. People should know that they can’t be shipped across state lines (federal law). So, if your BM Infedel breaks, Benchmade won’t accept it unless from a dealer or proof of LEO or I believe active military. IMO-not worth owning for many reasons. I can open many manual knives quicker. But, I don’t care about the speed anyway.

It’s funny we can’t get our otf’s serviced by the manufacturer if we’re in an illegal state, but I’ve ordered 4 microtech otf’s from knife dealers online, all came in the mail no issues.

Yeah. The sad thing is that unlike gun owners, I feel like *most* knife owners realize using a knife for self-defense isn't exactly the best idea. Most of us edc knife owners just enjoy them as tools, and realize that the only time you need a knife is when you don't have one. Apparently a lot of the restrictions on "switchblades" are related to racism and moral panic related to young adults. As you clearly show, and as I always try to tell people, an automatic knife really isn't "faster" than any other modern knife, other than the modern version of your grand-dad's slipjoint. And just as much, no one is going to use a custom, five digit knife to commit a murder. The knives are so unique, and easy to track down who made them, and therefore who sold them, you'd basically be providing evidence for the prosecutor lol. I really hope California can change their knife laws; I think it's fine if some areas like LA want to have their own length restrictions, but state level California would basically be perfect if they allowed balis, switchblades of any length (I love my legal protech sprint!), gravity knives, etc. I have no issue with having concealed dirks or daggers illegal, since there's no tool purpose for that (though I think having a sheathed fixed blade in a bag or backpack should not count as it being concealed, since it's not immediately accessible).

Frankly, I'd even be okay if you had to buy some sort of tax stamp to own anything currently illegal in cali. Cops know what you have, state knows, whatever. Since I'd only ever use a knife in self defense where I'd rather be in jail than dead, what's a $50 tax stamp that goes to, iono, knife safety classes for children? Hell, I'd even pay to take some course to get a basic license or whatever. I think that's the thing with any sort of regulations for things that can be dangerous; if you provide a reasonable burden for people who really love these things, they will comply and understand it. It's part of the reason why no pre-ban auto firearm has EVER been used for a crime post ban. These are collector pieces that people pay five, six, seven figures for.

so true, I think most people should watch this video. canada doesn't allow automatic knifes sadly. and i away say the same thing. I have regular knifes that I can open just a quick, and a attacker will mostly use a kitchen knife.

Yeah, but good luck to you convincing lawmakers that an OTF is just a tool when your blade is looking hyperagressive and you call it the COMBAT troodon. The reason that some types of knives get banned is because of the knifemakers themselves who advertise them not as tools but as effective weapons.

I agree. Reminds me of the RIP pistol rounds. Some dumbass company decided to name their custom 9mm pistol rounds RIP, which means if you shoot someone in self defense, the court has a reason to charge you for intent to kill.

also OTFs would be safer in the event of mechanical failure because your fingers are clear of the blade whereas on knives that function on pivot points can break and snap shut on the handle where you grip

I was told by (I don't remember) that automatic knives were used by electricians, or similar, cause it doesn't require both hands.

Roofers and first responders too. Especially first responders. They need a knife they can open quickly with one hand to cut off seatbelts in the case of an accident

I've carried the Halo without the sheath it's to bulky with it, the only reason I don't carry it often is that it just takes to much room in the pocket and I wouldn't feel comfortable using it in front of people looks way to aggressive. Awesome video as always 👍 .

Wish my state was a bit more free about autos. Not any more useful than anything else, buy a really cool novelty. When people talk about launching an OTF straight into somebody, I like to put my Ultratech up against a sheet of paper and show how it deep it doesn't go through

Illegal in NC but cops and especially Sheriff's dept. don't tend to enforce knife laws unless you're a threat to the public. That being said auto's are just really cool toys as I can get almost any tacticool legal folder in action faster that most can get an automatic in action. Knife laws are a bad joke at best and a violation of 2nd amendment rights at worst. In Jefferson's day edged weapons were and still are considered arms.

Yeah I met someone that kinda has a lower end otf but still keeps for his self defense situation with a dagger and it’s more better to be a dagger in a otf form then a fixed blade even protech and microtech work with the military it makes no sense so I agree it’s a tool and can be a adult fidget spinner

it’s a misconception that they “derail”.. they simply don’t get rehooked by the spring.

Knife laws are generally something that you get charged with as an add on. Like a cop stops you for reason x and then sees your knife and if its illegal then they have you.

I'm surprised single action OTFs are a thing when double action is available. Seems like an awkward, inconvenient, and unnecessary pain in the butt by comparison. Particularly given that so many people just love to flick these things in and out as fidget toys. I would think it would be cumbersome to have to load the thing every time.

Yeah, just seems a bit unnecessary. If I needed a sheath for a knife that big, I'd just carry a fixed blade, and if I wanted an otf, I would just carry a double action. I guess maybe you could argue you get more knife compared to a fixed blade in the sheath, but you lose tang strength.

They are, and the tab having to stick out the side on most makes the handle completely open and exposed to debris. My single action jammed up the first day I carried it because of a tiny piece of lint. Double action is the only logical design

I live in Canada knife laws here are ridiculous, flipper assisted knives aren’t even allowed to be imported in.

Nah assisted is fine in Canada. Autos, Bali's and gravity knives are illegal but anything else goes pretty much.

Why automatic knives are dangerous Because the laws are written by people who have seen it is knives in the hands of villains in the films and therefore it is necessarily dangerous look at us in France the shotguns are subject to very heavy laws while the hunting shotguns with 2 barrel that fire the same ammunition are much easier to buy

I came looking for info about this because I have a bit of a collection of nice folding knives, lots of spyderco and benchmade and such. Someone gifted me a Microtech automatic folding knife, and I love it. It's got a big m390 blade and a really strong spring, and you press a small button on the side and this wicked sharp fairly large blade comes flinging out almost instantly. BUT it gives me a red flag for actually carrying it in my pocket, because it wouldn't take much to accidentally deploy it right into my leg or at best through my pocket and pant leg. I would want to carry it in some kind of belt sheath or something. I agree that the laws about this are pretty ridiculous though. Also, I REALLY want one of those batman knife, sorry! Looks fun.

Thats why I love my home state of FL we can carry any knife we want as long as its not concealed. I carry a 10inch or 15inch bowie knife all the time to walmart or just walking down the street. Although we do have giant alligators and lots of snakes so its kinda safer too.

New York politicians need to watch this... then make all the cops watch it afterwards. New York knife laws are extremely vague and easily exploited. Our knife laws need to be more defined so less people get into legal problems for carrying a knife that falls into that "vague" category.

Autumn Aurora some states like mine allow you to basically carry anything you want with an easy to achieve permit for the items that require them (provided you are not a felon and you gave not been institutionalized) but then you have places like NYC and California which go the complete oposite direction.

Funfact: I live in The Netherlands where all automatics are forbidden. The country next door is Germany, where one of the Böker sites is. I went to the Böker knife shop in Solingen last week and there they sell a.o. the Kalashnikovs automatics. But because in Germany automatics are only allowed on small knives, they sell the Kalashnikov XL without the spring! They have the button lock which you have to press to open them, but then need your second hand to take the blade between you thumb and fingers to take it out. Europe is just as confusing as the US with so many different rulings per country.

It seems that in your jurisdiction people are very limited on tools most would consider defensive like stun guns and pepper spray.

I live in Virginia, I am not allowed to carry any of my Protech autos outside of my home which really sucks!!! I love my autos and would love to use them at work but I can’t, maybe one day when common sense catches up with politics! Love the video!!!

Automatic knives are victims of compromises most of the time where legislators want to ban all sorts of pocket knives and the auto's and balisongs are the compromise victims.

I keep my mouth shut. "They" can have their auto ban. Just don't start restricting blade lengths even more, banning locking mechanisms, or one hand open manual knives. That being said the law is without any real logic and I would love to have an ultratech just for fun. (I am from way-upstate NY.)

I carry an ultratech and I live in New Jersey, I’m not on polices radar as I’m just a normal person who lives quietly. No one has ever recognized it as an otf from looking at my pocket.

Here in Idaho, you can even own ballistic knives. There is no knife we cannot own, even all swords are legal.

I have a microtech halo v,I like it,but it’s not edc friendly

After having one assisted knife (a kershaw), I kinda lost interest in all assisted knives and never really cared to look further into the autos. My manual folders and fixed blades are functional enough for me. Maybe I'll get another flipper one of these days (if I need to fidget with something) :)

There is only about 12 states that automatics are illegal. Most states they are legal.

I agree. How are we still placing laws restricting primitive close quarters weapons. Im going out on a limb here. What civilian uses weapons? Unless its in your home for self defense. Shuriken are still illegal in California. Grrrr.

Definitely not true. In most states that aren't "culturally enriched" there are no knife laws. Only in shitty states they have those.

mi2092 I’m in New Jersey, I’ve ordered 4 microtech otf’s from various online knife stores.

Knife laws are a joke. I am in chicago and the laws are so vague and floaty no one really knows. I think it should all be legal. If someone wants to hurt someone they are going to do it with a knife a gun a damn spoon.

Daggers are not more dangerous but dumb in anything but an OTF or fixed blade.

Here in Ohio we can carry pretty much any knives we want.
