Dear god save me. Today we are watching the dumbest film I've watched so far, this year. Donald James Parker is, once again, infecting my mind with his nonsensical rhetoric, this time in Gramps Goes To College. The only thing that makes this better than his film "Hearts Are Trump" is the fact that it has an actually storyline. Otherwise, it somehow manages to be the worst/greatest film of all time. Enjoy.

I feel like the funniest thing about this sort of Christian propaganda is the total inability of its creators to understand that atheism is not a religion. It's not organized, it's not evangelical, and it usually isn't a primary identity of those who profess it. It's a lack of belief, not an oppositional belief system.

It's because they're so used to dogmatic thinking that they literally can't conceptualize the idea that someone reached their conclusions without dogma. It's kinda sad, honestly. There's plenty of Christians out there who don't just let dogma control their lives. They trust in science and turn to their faith for the questions that science can't answer. I think that's a very healthy way of looking at things.

As a Christian, I can confirm that this is an ubiquitous depiction and I agree it's annoyingly unrealistic. Often, it's in the view of talking to someone that has NEVER heard about the Christian gospel which is usually rare in our country. But I remember a kid one time getting upset (sad not mad) because their experience witnessing to someone didn't go as well as all the movies and videos we saw in kid's church. It should just be a real human conversation and if someone rejects, then respect their God-given free will and move on with life. No one has all the answers, so if they say they do, they're probably scamming you. Christian or otherwise. I've only seen a very very few people condescend about non-believers and act like this kind of a jerk when they were obviously sheltered kids that hadn't had meaningful interactions with the secular world otherwise, this is not how any college kid talks.

And if we're talking specifically hard shelled eggs, that's ancestral to quite a few groups which evolved it convergently. But in the case of birds it evolved somewhere in dinosauria and has so far been retained in all birds- including chickens. The first chickens came from chicken-like hard shelled eggs. Some of them want to become interpreters, some are learning ASL for working with Deaf patients or children for jobs in hospitals or teaching, some are learning because they just want to, and some are simply taking it as their language credit. One person I sit next to already has a bachelor's degree, and she's taking it just because. So it's not really surprising to see older people enrolled at colleges. The same thing happened in my phlebotomy certification course as well. Anyone who wants a career change later in life that requires going back to school is a normal part of the college student body.

The one thing I always find hilarious about these kinds of movies is that they portray a world in which Christianity is under fire at college campuses and even the professors themselves are hostile towards religion. When in reality situations like this are likely the result of evangelical Christians actively seeking conflict on campus and creating conflict. I think the real issue people like Donald have is that college campuses are more protective of free speech, which allows students of all backgrounds and cultures to express themselves freely, including Christians. They don’t want young Christians to potentially be exposed to alternative ways of thinking and change their perception of the world, which is just sad. As a Christian myself, I have only ever experienced persecution in college from other Christians, including those in my own sect. But it was never grand or earth shattering, it was usually micro aggressions. And often I found students similar to Donald, who viewed college as a haven of sin and religious persecution… even though the campus was majority Christian?

There wasn't some massive debate or anything like that, there was just a Christian (or at least I think he was Christian) that had his own interpretation about the story.

"How did this organism survive without a brain in order to develop one later? What came first the brain or blood or heart of liver or kidney?" Literally anyone with a basic understanding of biology can answer that question which makes me wonder how he passed biology enough to study it in university. I just know he knows nothing about biology and only made the character a biology student so he can critisise evolution.

Wtf why does this character earnestly put forward the argument, "what came first, the blood, the lungs or the brain?" When a microscope and by extension single cell organisms don't disprove the possibility of a God? He literally can go walk down into a lab and observe the wonder of an amoeba.

Th elatter of which I know we kept ourselves entertained by making jokes about how in an attempt to be homophobic the main character was literally being a little Too Gay (like wdym you went to the same coffee shop with a gay guy for a whole week had coffee with him to the point that he knew?? your order???) and also the ending was ?? SO OUT OF POCKET. BUt IN Gramp's Shoes is just an hour and a half or something of anti-smoking ads. HORRIFICALLY boring. Hate them forever but if you've got friends and wanna make fun of some conservative bullshit it's a fun time

This dude has never been around teens. I’m a mom of a 17 daughter and 19 son and while teens don’t necessarily beat around the bush when they want to know something, they absolutely do not interact this way at all. Of course he would make their characters be edgy and just insufferable but even the most entitled ones don’t speak like this at all. And I don’t always even know what the hell they are talking about 😂

my friends parents have been doing this since i can remember and im 39 now... when we were young there was a building people had to drive around to cross the highway and all the kids from my area hung out at the basketball courts next to that store but everyone who lived in that town had to come around that circle in their cars to enter or exit the town.... His parents would pull over to talk to us and have beers cracked and drinking and would just be driving around drinking a 30 case even though they had a house.... its just wild to me how irresponsible some people are that have children.

These films are so revealing about how their makers see the world. Like, imagining that the only two options are “science denying Christian” or “god hating anti theist”, ignoring the amount of scientists and professors out there who ARE Christian, or literally any other religion. And the weird idea that a lot of non-Christians have no idea about Christianity or have never been told/exposed to their arguments. It’s like they think “people would all think like me if they heard my arguments, so if they don’t think like me, they must not KNOW. Either that or they’re demonic”. It’s such a self centered and naive way of thinking. Especially the fact that they really just DON’T listen to or research the opinions of their opposition, to the point where they don’t even know how to write it into their movie and just make every atheist character unable to voice a single valid point. Honestly, I’d love to see a movie framed like this but where the other characters are able to answer the stupid questions the fundamentalist asks. I think there’s some questions about religion that are harder to answer (thus why I’m agnostic rather than strictly atheist) but it’s not things like “what came first, brains or blood?!” or “what color is natural selection?”, so it would be interesting to see how far a character like that could get before floundering or just showing they don’t care to truly understand the other point of view.

I went to college AND joined the religious group there that I grew up in the faith. Guess what? My classes were classes. Religion wasn’t mentioned. Chemistry was chemistry. Math was math. My Calc teacher never stood up and asked the class about their faith, or promised to shake their religious foundation. We learned about math. There’s no “woke-ism” class everyone takes together - just classes in your major. Also, we had mass on campus every Sunday. We did community outreach. We played intramural sports against other religious organizations on campus, and never got in to a discussion about which religion was correct. Oh, and on Fri & Sat nights, there were parties and there was alcohol. No one died. When I turned 21 in college I went to the college bars with friends and drank alcohol, and no one died. (Ok, so we did hear about some girl who drank too much, went back to her dorm, fell asleep in her bed with the window open, and the windows in that dorm opened inwards but that proved to be a fatal design flaw when you put a loft bed over the window with enough space for someone to roll over in their sleep and fall to their death. So I guess someone did technically die, but a sound sleeper would have done the same.) I talk with people who didn’t go to college who think the liberal colleges are brainwashing kids, and it’s a weird narrative. You go to classes and learn about that subject. Outside of classes you’re on your own to make your own friends, and believe whatever you want to. If anything, you’re interacting with so many people with different beliefs that you learn to think critically. And also, in reality, a 60 year old going to college would be pretty normal. Just another student. Dorm life could be interesting. My roommate stayed up playing FPS games till 4am every night, and blasting music during the day. And buying Walmart brand soda when it was his turn to restock the mini-fridge. 🤷‍♂️
