It's time to get back to Storage Wars, one of my favorite shows as a child. However, I'm not too happy about today's episode because now I have to talk about all the controversy surrounding the show. Crime, lawsuits, and RIGGING are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this show's dark past, so let's sit down and figure out just how fake this show is.

    I'm an EBay reseller.....and I'll tell you this...there is a buyer for everything. My wife and I have sold the most fucked up shit on Ebay and turned a good profit on it too. Weirdest thing we sold was a old shot glass that had a drawing of an old man grabbing the ass of the waitress and laughing (very un PC today) But, we listed it after finding it at a yard sale for .50 cents. We sold it for 10 bucks and the person who bought it sent my wife an email telling her how happy she was to find that shot glass. Apparently, her dad had a bar that had burned down shortly after he passed away...anyways, his fav shot glass at this bar was that exact shot glass she bought from us. Her plans were to rebuild the bar, and have that shot glass sit behind the bar on the shelf under a picture of her dad. It was kinda sweet....but, again..its the little weird things that mean the most to people.

    My family are actually auctioneers and have their own auction company, sometimes go to storage unit auctions for extra inventory to pad out auctions if consignors don’t bring much. Storage Wars though? Fake as hell. Hilariously so. My grandpa loves the show though because of it. Watches it all the time, laughing about the obvious plants and inconsistencies.

  • @maxbracegirdle9990

    I don't know if I'm just reading this wrong, but what do you mean you "go to an auction for extra inventory to pad out auctions." Like, I just can't grasp it. Maybe I don't know the lingo

  • @arbington

    @arbington

    4 ай бұрын

    Can explain. So, these auctions for storage units. There’s also just independent auction companies out there that don’t have diddly to do with storage units, like my family. Say you have a garage full of stuff you want gone, or a relative died and left a whole house of stuff behind. People call my folks, and we agree to auction it for them, and we keep a percentage of the money for our time and work sorting and selling it all. We run auctions weekly, they used to be in person back in the day, “live auctions,” but now it’s mostly online. What you see in the show is a live auction, with the funny fast talking and all that and people yelling “YuuuuUuuuuUUUUpppPp!” Suppose one week we don’t really have enough stuff to do a good, money-making auction. Well that’s bad for us and our clients both, gotta have enough stuff to attract the customers. So we can just add stuff to the sale ourselves, nothing wrong with that, but where do you get lots and lots of lots of random stuff? Closed out storage units mostly. In Texas, auctioneers have to be licensed and certified and they all have to take classes and tests together and stuff to stay in business, learning the laws about what can and can’t be sold, so typically all the auctioneers in a given area know each other whether they do estates or consignments or storage units or whatever. So my grandpa and parents will go down to the storage unit closeouts on weekends and bid if there’s anything that looks good. It kinda is like on the show. The owners of the storage units that people abandoned for whatever reason open the door, you’re not allowed to dig inside until it’s sold but you can scope out what seems to be in it and if it seems worthwhile you bid on it and take the gamble. There really is a certain element of “You never know what you’re gonna find!” but not quite like on the show, in a much more mundane way. You may bid a few thousand on a unit full of gun cases that turn out to all be empty. You may bid a hundred or so on a unit with a bunch of power tools buried under trash. Never know really. Good way to maintain a stock of random valuable crap for an auction company though.

  • @maxbracegirdle9990

    @maxbracegirdle9990

    4 ай бұрын

    @@arbington Right right, so what I'm getting is that basically the auction might be for a bunch of storage units, but if there's only a few units, you'll also just auction off a bunch of random items too?? That's pretty cool. Thanks for the run down btw, I was never really super into this show like a lot of people were, but it's cool to have a bit of insite from someone who knows the business

  • @arbington

    @arbington

    4 ай бұрын

    Close! We just do consignments and estates. So think, like, a garage sale that you’re paying someone else to do for you. But instead of garage sale style, we auction it. When we did live ones it was a big affair, we had a guy who would come out and sell barbecue to the customers, was fun. Most customers were old folks, so it was also obviously their way of getting out and socializing, for some of them anyway. Spend a weekend eating brisket and chatting about the price of antiques with fellow elders, seems fun at that age. We’d set up a bunch of folding tables, and on the tables you have little boxes and flats full of items, all sorted out, going down the line auctioning box after box. Getting more extra stuff from storage units, that just comes in if we don’t really have enough stuff from consignors or the estate to fill the tables. Most of the money goes to the people we sell for, actually our family’s “edge” in the business came from taking a bit less cut of the money than average. One of the other benefits of getting inventory from units is, since we bought it and it’s ours, we also get to keep the full proceeds on those items. I could probably ramble about it all for hours though, and I’m not even actually part of the family business, just grew up around it. It’s kinda interesting. As one of their instructors for the licensing once said, you never know what you’re gonna be selling next, and there’s job security forever so long as people keep needing to sell their extra junk. You probably have a local auction company wherever you are, and if it interests you, maybe register to bid sometime. It’s kinda fun and one of the best parts of it in my opinion is the customer is always paying what they think it’s worth, so it’s nigh impossible to be scammed so long as you bear in mind it’s all secondhand and it’s being sold as is where is with no guarantees. It’s an interesting business for sure.

    That Hazeltine 1000 is useless without an actual mainframe to interface with. Also, it should come as no surprise but when these things were first being sold, they were about $1000 each. I think most Hazeltines I've seen go for about $500 if they're in working condition, but only the most diehard of retro computer guys would probably buy one of these. The only thing Dave had of value in that storage locker that he could profit off of were the car parts, and given the terminal being in the same locker, assuming it's not a plant, I get the feeling Dave bought part of an out of business mechanic's shop.

  • @eric_d

    You don't need a mainframe to use a terminal. I have an old Zenith terminal from the early 70s that I hooked up to a Sun Sparcstation computer running Solaris. It's such a cool thing to be able to get on the internet with a terminal that's older than I am. I still wouldn't pay more than like $100 for that Hazeltine though.

    Yeah, I know 2 people who make pretty good money by taking possession of the storage units of people who couldn't afford to pay the rent any longer, and it's really predatory, because they're essentially grave robbing while these people are still alive. It really sucks how much money can be made due to people being in poverty/unable to even afford the few things they have in their lives

    i used to work almost exclusively with vintage/expensive items, and i can GUARANTEE YOU that even in an industry where antiques and other items are hand picked and fact/price checked as high quality... none of this stuff normal to find lmfao. the most expensive things you could convincingly come across in those storage units is jewelry. you would not BELIEVE the amount of people that basically throw away vintage pieces or solid gold (got a 50 gram gold necklace in where i worked and it sold for almost three thousand dollars). tbh there is something to be said for vintage tech though. i managed to snag a sony tape-to-tape recorder that usually goes for 300-2000 dollars, but like andy said, almost no one is gonna buy these things for full price (i bought it for 30 LMFAO)

    For selling items (13:44), almost all the characters on the show have their own thrift/vintage/antique shops where they effectively use the lockers as a way to get new inventory. Not sure how much of that is legit, but at some point in the show you see each character go back to their respective stores, so it seemed pretty legit to me lol

    Favorite flightless bird… gotta give it to the terror birds, flightless and extinct predatory birds. These things were big, fast, and had strong legs and sharp beaks. Shame they went extinct, I bet they were a sight to behold on a hunt- though they’d be terrifying to face. If we’re talking birds still alive, I love the cassowary. Practically a living dinosaur. Their large talons are like daggers and they can slice you open if they decide they don’t like you. Their call is deep and seems like a window into the past, like we’re hearing what dinosaurs might’ve sounded like… and their colors are stunning on top of that.

I guess that's just their character, but it always amused me. Meanwhile Dave's character is being an asshole, but he also seemed like he had a good strategy with the auctions he did win, where he'd look for furniture and appliances he could polish up and sell at his store. Everyone else was always looking for some kind of wild home run,
