As a side note, Shadow moon has a part in this episode when he sees the embers or small lights manifest around him in a vision after his encounter at dinner, I think there's some significance. Btw this has happened atleast 2 times b4. In previous seasons the lights seem 2 come as flashpoints into the past of important/ significant moments. 1st time happened during an episode when a slave was beheaded/ burned & lynched, he seemed to embody & experience the trials of the dead man & as well the lights came again another time outside funeral home, it lead him to his next destination. It would seem that Shadow's powers are growing, maturing & manifesting as he grows stronger in his role as a young deity.

So Wednesday/Odin is a bigamyist. He married Demeter despite already being married to Frigga. But it's been thousands of years and he was most likely already estranged with Frigga when he met Demeter

I just asked a question just cause I know I'll mostly not get the book. And it being such yes or no thing. Like if someone asked if Jesus was on supernatural I'd say no. Just because it's not that important overall.

The relationship between Bilquis and Technical Boy and in some ways Mr. World kinda reminds me of Pinocchio. Bilquis as the Giver of Life seems to breath emotion (humaness) into Technical Boy and its like he's becoming "a real boy".

I think the fact that they made Demeter's child a girl rather than a boy may refer to Persephone, the daughter actual demeter. When Persephone was abducted by hades to the under-world, Demeter turned cold and distant to the world. This was something she said about losing a child to shadow. I may be wrong, yet I just wanted to bring my opinion on the table.

I would agree w you if it weren’t for the fact that when they fell in love , it was during the end of the civil war when she was just summoned to America. All the stories we know about her in Ancient Greek mythology had already happened way before arriving to America. I think maybe the baby was born a girl because it make sense that a fertility goddess would bare a female child of fertility n we know the gods bared many children over the centuries

I thought the same! Her daughter was "taken by death" in the form of Hades in the myth, which could be a fitting metaphor for her daughter dying. I think it was referring to Persephone

The child's sex is irrelevant. The rest of the story is what was. It was probably known to Wednesday beforehand that they would never be able to have children. I imagine there are some rules to their existence. One of them being their lives are loosely and tightly bound with their images. It could of just been a power play from Woten knowing it wouldn't work. But just a means for him to stick around a little longer as he knew how much she missed her own Daughter.

@@papitoquerido7827 Its true, but the history is ciclic so it can happen again and again, after generations have passed by, like Wednesday says the gods shift by the worship of humans so does history repeats it in a diferent way

The phrase "I don't do drugs; I am drugs" is a quote by Salvador Dalí. Shadow calling Laura his late wife and Laura correcting him is a reference to a point in the book where Shadow thinks of Laura as his ex-wife and has to correct himself and think "late wife", because she's undead at that point. Demeter mourning the loss of a daughter could be a reference to her daughter Persephone, who was also taken from her to the underworld, and whose father was also a sky god (Zeus). Zeus was mainly known as the god of thunder, and it's interesting how Wednesday includes fake thunder in his shadow play (and you hear thunder when Demeter ascends at the end of the episode). That's all I caught. Awesome video as always, bro.

When Sam drives away, Shadow runs the dirt from the car off his fingertips. This is a reference to when he first met Sam and her truck said “wash me written in dirt”

I just love Gaiman's use of the Midwest when it comes to American Gods. It is so awesome because sometimes people forget just how many cultures exist in the Midwest. I am just laughing at the possibility of all of the gods that would have interacted with each other within the confines of big cities like Chicago, Detroit, etc.

@@jahjohnson31 I think in the TV show bliquis is tech boys sister or even mother or lover. And moon again is either of the above to bliquis. Just like odin has a love triangle. I think this may be true to those three. The "new" gods are not new but a masterplan from the creators.

I bet that when technical boy gets his hands on artifact 1 he his going to awaken as a primal old god of human creation. Its funny because if its true he would technically be one of the oldest gods.

This is the TV show playing around with the characters. It wasn't like this in the book. It was made pretty clear "new" gods were a first of its kind god, and not something reincarnated or reinterpreted as time passed.

@@thebox7139 & Ryan, that makes sense and maybe Tech Boy is the oldest Gods because it seems that most of them have a long history and have forgotten “who they were/are”! Tech Boy at the world fair was unsure and seemed lost/vulnerable compared to when we saw him in the club last season!!! Maybe this is why Bilquis’ (s/p) story line this season was important because she became something else and was reminded of who she was/is. That would be a plot twist if Tech Boy was the oldest God and if he sides with Odin & the Old gods 🤔 plus there has to be a reason that World is keeping that stone 2 miles underground and Tech Boy doesn’t know about it. Damn...The Stone Age!!!

I'm from Columbus OH. I'm black so it's not my culture but I am a viking! My High school's mascot was a viking and there were representation of Norse mythology throughout the school. Our news paper was called the Runestone, our yearbook the Valhalla, and our drill team were the Valkyries! I've always loved the mythology of all different cultures.

I think that the waking of tech boy’s emotions to remind him who he really is kind of aligns with another god being reminded who she is too. Kind of like both are in a prison of the mind that suppressed their true self. Wednesday had Demeter until he mentioned his plan again at the door. All he had to do was shut up.

Demeter wanted to know that He had changed and he has, but by reminding her that his agenda always comes first, he showed that he was still basically the same. Just calling it like I see it.

I loved this video. My take on the ending scene with Demeter is that she didn’t leave with Wednesday because she was mad but more so went back to nature so she could be Herself as the Goddess and also have the time to herself to grieve their Lost Child. Remember in the last Episode she told Wednesday that, “Do you know that I never even had the chance to really MOURN our baby?”. Everyone else is focused on War and Money, etc...but Demeter is still stuck in the hurt and Pain of both Wednesday deserting her and the Lost child. It’s just my perception of it all being a Woman and knowing the powerful connection to birthing Children. When Demeter stepped outside the clouds immediately opened up, the Sun started to Shine flowers were blooming. Then she looked back at Wednesday and began to dissolve as the weather turned back grey, gloomy and became to heavily Rain. Those were her Tears. She is now Free to Mourn and be herself as the Goddess she is.

Loki was also the name of shadows cellmate in season 1

I agree with everyone about Demeter's storyline. But, it sure was nice to see a representation of one of my favorite goddesses. Tech boy realllly annoys me, so idc what happens to him. I miss Crispen Glover & Mad Sweeney!!

It's true Demeter's story is filler but I loved every moment with Blythe Danner so I don't mind at all. As for Tech Boy - totally agree. Was never a big fan but this season Bruce Langley is annoying me even at the whining voice level... Miss Mad Sweeney, Anansi (wow! Orlando Jones) and Media (Gillian Anderson in all her costumes)...

So glad I'm here before they copy strike! The camera work on the final Wednesday shot was phenomenal, it's cliche and mainstream, but come on! On a TV show? the meaning between the lines there, the back and forth motion of the camera, the allusion to The Last Supper? It's just the right balance of artistic esoteric idealism and natural, real emotion of the storyline brings to the set.

They are the personification of ideas. Not gods of them. Tech boy is the manifestation of mankinds obsession with technology. Modern technology is a result of globalization (Mr. World) I kind of realized that the New Gods are living ideas and the old gods are living stories

i think the thunderbirds sticker is a highschool sticker from the local school in lakeside not a band(maybe even a parking sticker) she mentioned that they were about the same age and probably went to highschool together, the school has been mentioned a couple times(the money from the ice car game, sam crow going there)

Story Dive missed this completely... but you got it right.

This was the finest episode of the entire series and the music towards the end was a Masterpiece

I think Demeter character was in the mental hospital strictly for Wednesday to find her, where he needs to be. Demeter is the god of harvest & fertility but also Life and Death. Demeter transformation was symbolic of her Death. Whatever she came to that hospital for was complete. Wednesday died watching her transition. The question is how did that change Wednesday..

This episode finally felt like the series was getting good again I loved it I like the fact Danny trejo showed up I love the setting and the story ofnir told this is what I needed

A reference was made to Shadow getting some skating lessons, which would presumably take him out on the lake which would be an interesting way to move that story line along...

It feels like the Demeter/ Wednesday story line was just filler. I am struggling to see the point in her character and how she progresses the story

I think it keeps pointing up something that plays the European patriarchal mythos embodied in Odin off against the mostly matriarchal Orishas minus Anansi. Odin, as a being of deceit and war, is a resource sink; even when married to Demeter Herself, all he can give her is a child that is stillborn or dies in infancy sometime around the Winter Solstice. In contrast, Shadow is blessed by goddesses and women alike without even trying, so he has luck in things that otherwise might have gone painfully wrong. I also have a suspicion, with no outside lore to back it, that the reason Shadow survived to grow up is that his mother knowingly sacrificed her life force for him, where Demeter did not for their daughter.

Absolutely true. But there’s much more to Demeter than just her story with Persephone/Kore. She taught humans to cultivate grain/harness natural growth cycles, brew beer, & more. There’s even a story where she falls in love with a mortal man & has a child. She is also key to the psychedelic Eleusinian Mysteries that are about much more than just her daughter’s abduction by Hades.

That rhyme at the end was top notch

This season overall hasn't been lackluster . I'm hoping is wraps up well

SPOILERS FOR SOME!!! I've never read the book. But it's ending was spoiled a long time ago for me. I've been told to go ahead and read it, as it's quite different from the show now. But I don;t want it to make any ideas on it's own. I want these to come au naturel. Still awaiting the new Sweeny? Or at least his next version portrayed by Ramsay Bolton. Mr Trejo/World, It's going to help Laura revive him or believe in him or something. A Sacrifice? As he will have access to the 'Horde' to get Gungnir back. And yeah, World on the phone was with whom I'm sure was ol Woten himself. And I've thought it's been Sandy's son in the chimney for a while now. I haven't lived in a house with a chimney since I was under 5, but I think it's safe to say of it;s used often, ppl would clean it often. Even more so if it's blocked. Last note, I honestly thought that Demeter was going to go through that doorway to get her Daughter with Wedenesday's help. Just a small guess. Was wrong. Edit:/ I thought the car was the sacrifice. Like there was a body in it each year. Almost a perfect crime. Unless a cop checked the trunk lol.

What do you know, the spoilers of your videos have actually motivated me to start reading the book :) it's different but i'm diggin it Also i've noticed, Margerite has a Homer book in her house right? In the book Shadow reads homer in prision and i'm not super sure because i've watched the first season a long time ago, but as far as i remember they didn't include this in the beggining, so i tought it was interesting

I feel the death of demeter's daughter is a a reference of persephone who she had with Zeus. I'm not sure that's a big deal but I find it interesting.

Certainly an echo of it, though in this case, it's not a maiden of marriageable age, but an infant born sometime around/between the Winter Solstice and the first days of Spring.

Demeter going into the sky made me cry. I really like your videos.

@storydive okay I think Shadow will be revealed as the God of Light because: Sam’s presence lightens his mood and twice the light bugs showed up to “guide him” before he has a mental shift. To me they represent light and Shadow has a “light” presence. I think Tech Boy will find that rock or he will be the artifact that the machine needs. If he dies it will be the first new age God that goes but I don’t see him dying. I feel like Tech Boy could end up siding with the Old Gods because the machine described his symbols as emotions lmao and he always tries to give Biliqust (s/p) room or not move against her, but she must have given him emotion when she put him in that war trance. There has to be a point to her straddling the fence and maybe now she will be Odin’s queen for the war. They showed the leprechaun in the preview so Laura will get the spear from the hoard. I think World will lead her to the leprechaun. I think World was speaking to Wednesday on the phone. I hope they speed it up and that there are more than 2 episodes left. To me Biliquist (s/p) and Demeter’s storylines were stretched because they haven’t exposed the point of their storylines this season...And they showed the name of a God (I’ll have to look at the scene again) on the band’s poster and it wasn’t Marilyn M. I think they edited his scenes out because of the accusations against him. That’s all I have for now...🤷🏽‍♀️

You rock! Thank you for that. I was ticked when I saw Demeter vanished. This show vexes me when sometimes the gods act human other times they use their god powers.

So if mr. World is Loki. Then that means he might have been (low- key, shadow's cell mate) at the beginning of the series At the prison and he was guiding shadow to meet Wednesday at the airport. Also, has anyone been looking for the hidden "some where in America" in the entire season? I just was wonder where some of them have been found.

the story telling formula from the first season is all gone... it was already being phased out in S2. There was a show administration change ( rather controversial one at that, and caused some actors to quite), after S1 ended... they further exacerbated the problem firing Orlando Jones, who was also a contributing writer for the show. As much as I don't want to admit it, the show is a hot mess right now.

In the book, yes, a name ironically not 'low key'. The whole story is an elaborate two-man con. The show kinda reminds us that it is - a bank heist by Wednesday-Shadow, and now by Shadow-Cordelia. The 'supposed' con overshadowing all others it the Odin-Loki team. Because, Odin feeds on war and sacrifice, and Loki feeds on conflict and chaos.

The book did a far better job of keeping you guessing, and the entire time you are convinced this is a war old God's have to do to keep from being rolled over by the New God's. The TV show is hacking this story in an epic blood bath, so there is no telling what the story in the TV show will end up as.

The boombox/jambox Shadow is cranking out Bell Biv DeVoe on is a Conion C-100F. This model in particular is noted for being the 'go-to' radio in movie productions for a boombox and is highly desirable and valuable. He complains about the battery costs to run it but a C-100F with working cassette decks would cost at least $1000 to buy today from eBay or anywhere else people know its value.

I miss how the show was portrayed in season 1 -_-

the whole Demeter plot did absolutely nothing to further the story,just wasted so many episodes in that mental insitution for the woman to dissapear...so sad they fuckd up a show with great potential

This show has always prioritized character and atmosphere over plot anyway, so I’m not sure what everyone is complaining about

Part of the stories (the real one) genius was the mystery surrounding Wednesday, his real motives, and his real allies. The "Holy Cow Batman, I Didn't See That Coming!" ending rest on that very mystery.... and too RhodusGuard.. Wednesday is not human! He's a God!

LMAO!! I was in the bathroom when you said, you are probably in the kitchen or bathroom. and my computer from which I was watching tis video in in the living room.

some people say Demeter arcs is a filler, but we would never know how Wednesday behaved in his prime time aka back in old America. How much he had changed after all this years & all of that. We wouldn't get that If there was no Demeter. Also "The Money" is still an important part of his grand plan! I think it's very likely we will see more of Wednesday past timeline including maybe even with the time where he meet Shadow Moon's mother.

I am kind of feeling Laura Moon as the next leprechaun demigod. Sweeney’s replacement. Maybe that’s why she has the coin. She has access to the hoard and the spear that way....And she has flashbacks, I think, of what Sweeney experienced. Like the spear grinding on the ground......it would be a lovely irony. The girl that believes in god not; to then become one herself. I Like it.

@@whatifyouandi Sorry, but Laura is a real live girl in the show now (but in the book, she stays dead and powerful until the end). There is no more magic for her as a mere mortal once again. The new leper that gets the spear out of the Hord is none other than GOT's Ramsay Snow/Bolton (Iwan Rheon).

While yes this is a stone tool, it's not the oldest form of stone tool, this is actually a piece of Mode 2 tech-Mode 1 tech is about 2 million years older. This is a piece of tech used by Homo erectus and long before there were any people of any sort in the US

Artifact one = rock=Stone Age=first time humans used any form of technology It all makes sense

So she was happy there, but bc of Wednesday, she had to come to terms again with her grief over their daughter and the irrevocable trauma she helped cause. She loses the bet, decides to help him by relinquishing her assets to him, but denies him her direct support by relinquishing her physical existence as a corporal being to rejoin nature by "dying", abandoning him now when he needs her most like when he abandoned their family?

13:15 Oh, I was hoping this would be integrated in the show!

Except that she doesn’t seem to know that Wednesday is a god, or about any of the other magical things going on. If you actually pay attention to anything she has said, the idea that she is the djinn in disguise makes no sense.

Good episode. I hope they still try write script on book. Really hope they do season four without recasting or firing actors for some shit.

They should have kept Orlando Jones but he was too inspiring for black American viewers 🤨😡, according to that asshat producer Charles Eglee that it was sending the wrong message to blacks 🤬. His script writing & acting was phenomenal. Hope they green light Anansi Boys for tv production since there’s rumors about making this a spin off, with Jones acting & writing. They didn’t even bother to release Jones from his writers contract being spiteful, preventing him from working as a writer. The Writers Guild Union & Jones had to sue the show to get his release 😡. Charles Eglee got racial biases for sure every time he’s asked & answered about the subject 😡.

I think that Laura becomes a new god. We see that tech boy was once mortal and became a god or god-like. It wouldn’t surprise me that artifact 1 is something that he had on him during the Spanish-American war that facilitated his transition. we possibly got a glimpse of that when Bliquis touched him then we saw him on a battlefield (Spanish-American war?).

I'd love to know how long this version of Wednesday has been around. Cuz even if that was the same him at the start of the episode. He's doubled his age by looks in only a few hundred years. Something to do with the amount of worshipers perhaps?

You didn't spoil it for me. I haven't read the books and I appreciate the incites. I've had some confusion over whether Demeter committed suicide or if she's still alive in the same form or if she will have to be reborn. I wondered why they didn't name their daughter Persephone but someone pointed out to me that Zeus was Perseph's father and not Ofnir. Did American Demeter never release her winter sadness upon the world when their daughter died?

Ohhhh I just got the book, but it was my understanding that the show wasn’t follow ing the book. I hope she become a new god, would be interesting.

@@jjw56 Season one followed the book word for word. It was only after the original show runners were fired did the split begin... Anyway. Laura is alive now in the show.

Technical Boy seems to get the short end of the stick after the first season. I remember the interviews that they talked about put him in avant-garde clothes, cutting edge tech fabric and fashions. Not to mention all the hairstyles. After that, it's like the new showrunners and writers were barely know what to do with him. I think part of the reason why I felt this season were somewhat lackluster is because of the dialogues. I don't know if they have the same writers room. But the dialogues are now less sharp, punchy, or insightful (Wednesday still have good lines). Now they are more perfunctory and milquetoast. I wished that Wednesday had been outside instead of just sitting by the window and barely utter her name. It was a choice for sure. It would have been more dramatic and perhaps a bit cliche if he was... say... at the main entrance and see her slowly flowing away. And started to run to her and yell out her name.

It would be more than he's capable of. He is clever, but he's not dynamic in himself. He feels loss, but it's the loss of power and prosperity far more than the loss of her as a person. That is his core flaw, I think.

Seems a lil slow this szn. It's basically like the new gods are kinda based on concepts and more technical advancement to some degree but the old gods are like living agreements and manifestations of energy which is then distributed somewhat selfishly

So artifact 1 is Stone for stone age as first technical instrument developed by first human. Interesting.

I wonder why the Automaton didn't actually appear in the episode as Technical Boy was still under it from last episode?, can't wait to see what Artefact 1 does and what the SHARD project actually is, who was Mr World taking to on the phone? and will we see any of the season 1 or 2 gods again (apart from Ibis, Bilquis, Wednesday, Mr World and Tech Boy)

Well Orlando Jones is definitely not coming back. You can see the writing & dialogue difference which now sucks since he was fired, along with some other writers from season 1. No one can replace the phenomenal acting Jones did as Anansi.
