Altered Carbon Season 2 Spoiler Review

Ойын-сауық

Altered Carbon Season 2 is now streaming on Netflix. Tamoor and Lucy give their spoiler filled reviews of the second season, starring Anthony Mackie as Takeshi Kovacs.
The first season of Netflix's Altered Carbon presented viewers with a fascinating futuristic world that was dense with detail. For those looking to throw themselves into a fresh sci-fi universe, Altered Carbon was packed with world-building and explored genre tropes in an interesting way. For Season 2, the show has traded Joel Kinnaman for Anthony Mackie, but that's not the only thing that has changed.
While Season 1 grapples with moral greys and heavy questions to do with the identity and existence of a person, Season 2 aims to be a more personal story about protagonist Takeshi Kovacs. It's also more driven by action and set-piece moments. But how does this come together and will fans of the first season be into it? That's exactly the questions we answer in our video review.
Lucy and Tamoor were big fans of Season 1 and, in the video above, talk about how they feel about the follow-up. They highlight the highs and lows, and deliver their overall impressions. They also discuss whether there should be a third season. If you need to get prepared for watching the second season, we have an explainer on the many technical terms and weird concepts, as well as a recap of Altered Carbon Season 1. Once you've finished watching the show, make sure to check out our article explaining the Altered Carbon Season 2 ending.

totally agree. so many missed opportunities for classic kovacs sarcasm. i kept imagining joel in every scene and dying a little inside at what could have been. especially when it came to Quell (which btw, terrible storyline and goddammit she's annoying) - imagine Joel's kovacs reuniting with quell - heartwrenching. obviously elias needed his body back, but they should have searched high and low for the perfect kovacs. instead they chose the guy who people would recognise. so disappointing. even Will Yun Lee didn't sound like Kovacs this season, did they switch writers???

I mean all that hype regarding this soldier of legend and his training, both physically and mentally, his experience (not to mention his new overpowered sleeve)... none of that showed on "our" Kovac... he looked like a depressed, mid-level fighter that acted as a support character for his love interest, or something to be taken shots at by a random bounty hunter. Where as the "og" Kovac, displayed all of the above in spades. Yeah Joel Kinnaman felt a lot more natural than Anthony. Joel looks and feels strung out, cold, exhausted and beat down but still maintains his presence and power. With Mackie it felt like a whole different energy. This seasons version of Takeshi kind of gets his butt kicked a number of times (especially by the old less experienced Tak? C'mon) so maybe that affected it. They also didnt introduce enough new ideas to this show to incite my mind into wandering down imaginative paths. I had to pause the first season a number of times because my brain would go off on tangents thinking about the nuances of all the things they were presenting and i would miss what was happening. Like Trepps "coils" were new but it really wasn't presented that interestingly. You guys talking about the magnetic gun hands had me cracking up. Our beautiful Poe is like the only thing that held this season together for me. Best change from the books, hes a goddamn gem.

I just finished Season 2, and I feel unsatisfied...not the good way either. Anthony Mackie as Tak 2.0 was fine, but I can't shake the feeling he was written much worse then in Season 1. He literally only has one goal/trait...Falconer. Plus his end (mostly) may have been the only option, but doing it felt like the writers shoving Talk away to make Quell the protagonist. Nevermind the worthless death of Jaeger (assuming he didn't have back ups). I can't be the only one, but did anyone else notice a tonal shift? I know Season 2 isn't a murder investigation like Season 1 was, but instead of world building, and moral dilemmas we got a somewhat predictable romance plot. I better stop writing this comment before I break YT posting it, but I'm a bit let down. If Season 3 is a thing I hope it's written better then this, and with a focus on the world not two characters. After all part of the charm of Season 1 is the world building and moral dilemmas.

It was easier to make a copy of Kovacs because it was a copy. Poe couldn't just copy himself because his program was damaged so he'd also be copying the damaged parts. That's why they needed to create a special program to separate out all his memories from the damaged parts of his program.

While everyone is assuming that the 'human dhf' shown at the end is Takeshi...what proof do we actually have that it is him? What if what we are actually seeing is Takeshi's gift to Po? Po's story arc was having him become more 'human' so perhaps what we see there at the end is a 'human DHF' that has all of Po's life experiences in it. A way for him to finally be truly human. It also fits with what Dig was doing to Po more than having an unreliable Po safeguarding a copy of Takeshi's DHF

It would have looked better on-screen and been much more practical to have him use a knife that auto returned. Essentially giving him MK's scorpion throw without needing a rope. They probably only picked a gun because they needed Tak to "blow" out stacks. I think the dog genes were put in so his mentor would be the "Alpha" dog? Which is weird to put dog genes for that. Anthony Mackie is an amazing actor. Season 1 the three Takeshi's are very different. Prime is having epiphanies and is hopeful, 2.0 is a broken man on the run but still trying to hold onto his morals, Kovach is completely jaded and out for self. In the end, he did help his pack but the original guy who was family over everything and down with final death was gone. The three actors didn't even talk or walk alike. Mackie putting his own spin on Takeshi was fine, the problem was the writing. His character didn't have much to it. He was all about finding his girl. This Takeshi wasn't faced with any of the moral dilemmas of season one. He couldn't show any depth to the character because the writing was surface level. Kristin was cool, but 30 years had passed since season 1. He was around her for a few weeks and he left her reunited with Elias. He definitely had more of a connection with Quell. The problem is she too wasn't written well. Her memory was gone almost the entire season, and then when she recovered it the fierce inspiring leader wasn't there anymore. The woman who created Envoys was worth 3 centuries of longing. It would've been better if Quell was gone. Sacrificing herself to the elder while she was in containment would've been better. It should've been her sleeve, and Takeshi making peace with her being gone and helping the aliens like she would've wanted. The Elders were the most interesting thing this season and they barely got any screen time. That's really where the show failed.

Biggest problem is not sharing information. Kel gets her self back by laving her hands, "Hey guys, there's an alien inside me and we made a deal, I kill the founders and the alien doesn't blow up the planet". Or the alien in the construct, "Hey Kovacs I made a deal with Kel..." To which Kovacs says, "Cool I'm down with that, but do you mind if I save Kel's life too? Kinda an addendum to your deal".

Carrera/Jaeger was a far more compelling character than Kovacs was this time. That's a great thing for a villian, but the supposed protagonist didn't really seem to have much agency. He was just reacting to events happening around him for the most part.

I liked season 1 much better, even though Anthony Mackie was good he was just an obsessed sourpuss who gets his ass kicked a lot. This season dealt with themes of obsession leading to ruin and our memories make us who we are even if we let go of the people in them so we can move forward in our life, and that was done well but Kovachs just seemed like a straight obsessed douche instead of the hopeful caring somewhat douche from season 1. Made me a little sad too as far as the memories make us who we are because my mom and grandmother passed away from Alzheimer’s disease, but I did like the Circle fights and loved Poe.

My biggest hope for season 3 is to bring back Joel as Takeshi again. Whether he is better at the character or you just can't not associate him as the Tak after the first season Joel to me just embodies Tak perfectly. The point you bring up about him being the detective and the better detective makes a massive difference to me. It fully plays into first seasons Noir atmosphere they did so well. Admittedly Harlons works makes that harder or more impossible to do but still the detective aspect gives the character and story so much more weight /body & feels more of a journey and more fleshed out. More complete I guess. Not good at saying what I mean it feel but so hope I get it across to you guys.

Season 1 was about life, and how one's darker nature can become twisted and stronger the longer they live. Tak was nothing but a relic that spent hundreds of years having nobody to care about and seeing the world turn into exactly what Quell was trying to prevent. His personality at that point borders on nihilism--something Joel did very well. Season 2 is about death, and letting go of the past. Tak spent 30 years looking for someone, becoming more distraught over time. Poe, his companion, constantly risks the success of missions because he cannot let go of his memories--Lizzie, in particular. Dig spent years without a purpose, and gets a shot at something new. In the end, Tak finds Quell and restores her memories only to realize that what he and Quell shared was a moment, not a start of an epic love. A moment that changed humankind. Tak even has the chance to tell HIMSELF in the most therapeutic of ways how he felt about killing his own sister. Tripp had to let go of her brother, someone she started killing to find. Tak, Poe, Dig, and Tripp all learn to let go. They all die, and become something new. I honestly love this season as much as I love the first. Both actors for Tak bring out the right elements for his character, given that he has gone through. Can't wait for season 3!

There were a lot of shortcomings in season 2 as sad as it is to say. Altered Carbon and Black Mirror are my two favorite shows of all time I was so excited for this and was let down. Anthony is not a bad actor by any stretch but i never felt like he was Tak in someone elses sleeve he just seemed like his own person whereas I felt like Joel and Will Lee acted exactly the same. It’s like he was really soft in this. All of the deep and interesting moral complexities of the Meths and humanity, living forever, being you but in a different body, seems completely stripped away and it was basically a pretty weak and unbelievable love story set in the AC universe. The chemistry just wasn’t there between the two actors and it just didn’t work for me. Also the tone of the show was completely different from season 1. S1 felt a lot more gritty, brutal & visceral. They are different in terms of the actual plot but the S1 was had ALOT of violence and nudity comparatively, which the nudity towards the end of the season felt quite gratuitous and they were beating you over the head with it so I was glad they toned that down for S2. Ugh why. I think “it’s there if you want it” sums it up perfectly. Season 1 is an absolute masterpiece and S2 exists.. Poe at least was still awesome and became an even more interesting and compelling character.

Also for me, I wish they did more of the story from the second book vs the make things up as they go along season 2. I enjoyed the world, but it wasn't exactly for me. Loved Poe, and while I like Renee Elise Goldsberry from her roles in Rent and Hamilton, I wasn't into Quell in S1 and even less into her in S2. Would have loved to see more of the lounge singer sleeve, she was cool in every other role I've seen her in. I BELIEVE joel and will as kovacs, as a character with depth to begin with - anthony mackie just seemed like anthony mackie pretending to be grouchy. didn't buy it. so many missed opportunities for classic kovacs sarcasm, for humour, and equally for pain and sincerity. i kept imagining joel in every scene and dying a little inside at what could have been. especially when it came to Quell (which btw, terrible storyline and goddammit she's annoying) - imagine Joel's kovacs reuniting with quell - heartwrenching. obviously elias needed his body back, but they should have searched high and low for the perfect kovacs. instead they chose the guy who people would recognise. so disappointing. even Will Yun Lee didn't sound like Kovacs this season, did they switch writers? and i have so many questions. how much time has passed since season 1? are all Poe and Kovacs' friends back on earth now deceased? how the hell did Poe get restored? Why did they backtrack on the Ortega childrens death? (theres no way the ghostwalker didn't slag their stacks too)

Mackie’s biggest goal in acting should have been consistency. The characters were just not the same. Tak Prime and Kinaman’s Tak were pretty similar, but Mackie’s was not the same. Additionally, I would have loved it if Quell stayed lost and lived as a ghost/memory forever. Would have made it so, so much more bitter sweet if he lived his whole life comparing everything with what it could have been with her. I would give S1 9/10 and S2 6.5/10. Effects aren't as good as the first season. It looks like a big budget drop. Netflix is tightening their budgets across the board, after literally going for broke trying to grab market share. Which is understandable. They can not continue operating at a loss. They had entered into a death match with Amazon and Hulu. Hulu stepped back first. Leaving the two giants to slug it out. But, its just not sustainable for either. Both, have stepped back to lick their wounds. The first season had more panning CGI shots with elaborate movement. Not just lights in the distance representing vehicles. This season looked not much better than any other Sfy-Fy channel show. The first season looked as good as a lot of high budget movies. Plus the first season had James Purfoy (sp), a very dynamic actor.
