Netflix's Locke & Key Season 1 Spoiler Review - Where Is The Horror?

Ойын-сауық

The Netflix original series Locke & Key, based on the comic book series of the same, is now available to stream. Mike and Chris give their spoiler filled review of Season 1, compare it to the comics, and list their favorite Easter eggs.
The live-action adaptation of Locke and Key has released on Netflix, with all 10 episodes of Season now available. Fans have been waiting over a decade for the horror comics to be adapted. Does the show live up to readers' high expectations? Mike and Chris discuss what worked and didn't work about the first season of the new Netflix show based on the comic series by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez.
Locke and Key follows the Locke siblings Tyler, Kinsey, and Bode (Connor Jessup, Emilia Jones, and Jackson Robert Scott, respectively) after their father Rendell (Bill Heck) is murdered by one of Tyler's classmates. With their mother Nina (Darby Stanchfield), the Lockes move across the country to Matheson, Massachusetts (named after horror author Richard Matheson, a change from the comics, where the town was called "Lovecraft"). In Matheson, they take up residence in Keyhouse, the ancestral mansion where previous generations of Lockes, including their father, resided for centuries. They soon discover that Keyhouse is full of magical, reality-bending keys that give the siblings fantastical powers--and the responsibility to protect those keys from threats who would abuse those powers.

Never messed with comics/books. From my view it was an amazing balance between mystery/thriller/fantasy. So much creativity without the crutch of nudity or vulgarity. High quality and lived in my veins like Stranger Things. I live that I can watch this with my children and talk to them about it. I will support more in any way I can.

I hate adaptations and stopped watching them years ago. All they do is fuck up what the author had to say. Look how bad they fucked up King's work in the past, not to mention the few things out so far of Hill's. IMHO if they can't stick to the original story they need to write their own fucking stories and stop riding on the coattails of successful authors!!

The show was fun to watch, but the characters acted braindead so many times. They did not utilize any of the abilities they have. Why would Ellie take the key with her while trying to get the crown? Even further, why would they leave any key with a person not part of the locke family?

  • @lwaves

    @lwaves

I just finished it today and felt the same regarding the braindead side of things. Having spent all that time keeping the keys from Dodge and even separating them, it was completely stupid to let Ellie walk off with a key. Especially as she's going to go get the crown which the key goes with and it's at a location that Dodge might appear at. The other big part was in the finale when Dodge was knocked out. Not once did they question the disappearance of the crown and neither did they check her for all the other keys she had.

The problem with the "all-ages" thing is that at the top left it says this show was supposed to be 18+ due to nudity, violence, whatever. Yet this looks like you can show it on TV. I fully agree that Stranger Things was scarier than this.

I think the show leaned more towards fantasy because the previous versions that leaned towards horror all got passed on. Overall I think the show is good. I don’t look for shows to be the same as the books or comics on which they are based. I think the guys got it right, the show is well made and well acted it’s just not a horror piece of work anymore. I think it does have space to get darker with more seasons though. Good review.

Feel like there could be the stupid high school stuff but the series needs to be extended. I think the story was fit to hit the ten episode mark. How Ellie took the key home with her when she went to get the crown was just so stupid. I understand it needed to happen to introduce the ending but they could’ve filmed a better way for dodge to get the key. We need more adventure and mystery in my opinion, plus more background info. Someone who has never heard about the comic has to google info which is terrible. Good Show overall though

I disagree with them portraying sam as a class clown. I found the scene with the pig extremely unnerving and to me it seemed like they were trying to show us a bit into his twisted mind. As someone who didn't read the comics i loved the show and as a result didn't see there being any missing horror. However i did find it frustrating how the main characters didn't utilise the keys when they were in trouble and as many pointed out, Elli carlessly took the key back to the house knowing Dodge would probably be there.

There were SO many instances, like that, that it felt like light torture. And I guess the majority of those moments could be chalked up as plot devices... or just bad attempts. She loves it and gets mad when I point out the cringey dialogue and other things I don’t particularly enjoy about the show. For me on the other hand I also expected more horror and for it to follow the comic at least 10% more than what they did but it still kept me wanting to see more. I still would recommend it to someone to check it out especially if they’re not into horror or want something to watch with their family or kids.

i disagree sm, like just because ur adapting something doesn't mean you have to be strict with what the source material provided, you can get the main idea of a story and add your own elements to it. That's what good book adaptors do. And as for "not making it locke and key" if they hadn't, they wouldn't possibly be able to use the idea of magical keys and the core concepts of the story. I think all the writers did was take a good idea and add their own interpretation of events and characters to it.

The showrunners have the choice to create something more original and call it something different.

  • @lwaves

@Malcolm Swoboda Of course, there will always be a link but I believe the OP is referring to those people who complain because something doesn't do exactly what the source material does. That's never going to happen and if people expect that, and that is their reason for not liking something, then yes, it is their fault. A book is a book, a film is a film and so on. They are very different entities. As you say, transferring between these things makes them an adaption, not a recreation. The main point of an adaption being to bring it to those who wouldn't read books, comics or see plays etc, and that's fine (as long as it's not overdone). If people don't want an adaption of some work they like, don't watch it as they know it won't be exactly the same. :-)

He was also dating Kensie for a really long time. There is so much more stuff going on with Rufus and his abilities as well as Dodge torturing the neighbor. Rufus is closer to Bode's age as well. They ruined the whole thing, basically. You can change stuff, but nor major plot points and characters. It's not Locke and Key without that.

The identity key decision was absolutely NOT good for the story in any way! It completely ruined the logic of the story for me. Dodge had the ability to change identity to absolutely ANYONE this whole time and he his plan is to flirt and have sex with Tyler AS FEM-DODGE??? He could have at any moment changed his identity to Tyler or Bode or anyone that they actually would trust, and simply ASKED the other for the damned key. Also why even include something as powerful as the music box and never even attempt to use it against Dodge? I would have opened the music box and keep it activated in my backpack until I see Dodge again. "Give me the keys and get in the well-house." That last one is a semi joke, but my point as someone else has said already, is that so many characters seem completely braindead.

To be honest, in terms of Horror I really wasn't expecting much from the show. Mainly because I really didn't think the comics were that creepy Either they were Darker, but They were not creepy.

@XL How very arrogant of you. Try making your comments more coherent with capitals, correct spelling and proper use of punctuation. Did you get an education? Maybe you should before you comment. You never specified your comment referred only to the end of the show, you just asked why they didn't explain to them. Even with what you said, my comment is still correct as yes, I did watch the show. Did you? It is a fact in the show that most adults forget. There is no 'negative'. You are wrong to say that as my comment is correct. Yes, I know they took the uncle's memories but that isn't what you asked. If you had paid attention you would know why explaining to their uncle wouldn't work. They started to with one of his memories but it didn't stick. Pay attention next time before you respond, if you had you wouldn't need to ask your dumb question in the first place.

The acting wasn't too bad but there's no way the characters in The live-action series could have done the book series any justice. I watch this and was like there's no way these characters should be this dumb.

I thought season one was beautiful and i feel sad but not that you dont agree. I feel like these 2 wanted a show that only appealed to them and their brutally critiquing everything in the show for it. the number of times they explained why things were done but then were like oh but theres other ways to do it than this. personally I think kinsy came off perfect and the series started with tyler being broody. but let's reiterate it's called an ADAPTATION FOR A REASON. personally I read the Harry Potter books before seeing the movies and still was able to enjoy the movies for what they were. you have to settle for what you get. I find their overly critiquing off the savini squad really hilarious cause they are obvious representation of people in a group like that and I personally think they are almost identical to their show counterparts.

You enjoyed how the characters constantly made dumb decisions? Same boat here. Never heard if the comics and actually enjoyed the idea and the first few episodes...then the character kept getting dumber. Why not use the music box to order dodge to give the anywhere key back? They could have used it to set up a trap instead of the sticks...or maybe saying the head key was inside the music box when sam held them hostage...

Then just packing up everything and driving for 25 hours maybe and settling into a huge mansion to try and start over with life. She probably was manic depressed, with PTSD of Sam, paranoid, worried, also fighting sobriety to the which she cracks for a moment. I felt sorry for her every time she was on screen. Sorry for the rant.

I don’t understand why you would want a straight across 100% reenactment of the comic. Comics are a specific type of entertainment and it would almost be cheesy if the show were represented in that way. I think you guys just already liked it and didn’t want it to change. Like you guys tell your girlfriend she can’t change her hair because you already like it.

Speaking generally, I completely agree and it can never happen. There's stuff done in print form, comics or novels, that simply can't be translated to film. It's just not possible and changes have to be made. If people like the original source material and want that exact story, they should go read that source material. A show or film adaption doesn't change that.
