Emma, you really are an inspiration. I've been very discouraged by my garden this spring, but yesterday I just "whacked in" my tomato plants and said, "If they make it, they make it and if they don't I'll just put out some more...just like Emma would do." 😆 Thank you for cheering me up!

You're not alone! 2 things: you need to pick as many up as you can and go and dump them in the wooded are by the main front entrance and secondly your little mouse is a woodmouse which eats snails. Don't feed it by the way. Frogs and toads are also good predators. Slugs will live under the soil. The best way to diminish them is to spend 3 evenings in early spring armed with a torch (and your family) and search whole plot, pick them up and dispose of them in the wood (ie as far away as possible)

Awww Emma, take no notice of people complaining. You just keep, keeping it real! We all suffer the same in our allotments and gardens, slugs, snails, whitefly, birds, rodents etc etc. The fact you mention it in your videos makes us feel we are not alone dealing with the same, it’s just real life. Also, yes, lots of comments on information and tips from other gardeners with more or different experiences is helpful for you and us reading them, things we might not have tried or know about. Gardening is never perfect all of the time, so many things to consider apart from the weather! Just keep being you hun and keep whacking them in 😊

You are a joy to watch Emma I started gardening shortly after I found your channel a couple of years ago. I always thought gardening was something I’d never be able to do. There are so many snobby garden gatekeepers with perfect plots on the internet. Very intimidating. You made me feel like I could, so I did and I now sit and look at my flowers and feel so lucky 🍀

Emma - you are an inspiration and one of my 'go to' gardening/allotment channels..I got my first allotment in February this year and I set it up NoDig compost on cardboard with woodchip paths, Charles Dowding style.. No bed sides, nowhere for the slugs and snails to hide and I have had no slug and snail damage at all, not even on the salad bed.. I recommend it wholeheartedly, do a trial bed or two alongside your dug beds and see how you get on - keep up the great work and the great content - Ian

Slugs are the ONLY topic of conversation for any gardener or allotmenteer this spring. There are so many of them and nothing is safe! Curse the wet start to the year. I often accidentally fall into a garden centre or the outside bit at Homebase. I don’t know what happens? 🤷🏻‍♀️ 😂 I’m also a sucker for a reduced “rescue” plant.

I too have had a slug and snail invasion in my garden. They are currently chomping their way through my blue hostas which I bought because I read that they avoid that variety. They've also almost destroyed my hydrangeas and I know now I've put my baskets out, at some point I'll see their slimy trails on the wall near them! We go out at night and pick as many as we can to get rid of them but the next night there's another lot. So I feel for you Emma as I'm sure everyone does.

All my snowdrops and most of my tete a tete daffy were eaten by the beggers!😢 I tried to get the numbers down with beer traps and nematodes...but they do love certain plants especially annuals like cornflowers!!!...I plant them in pots away from the main soil area. I got my first allotment in Jan and have been working on it every week getting it ready. I was really worried about snails as previously struggled with them at home when growing. However it may be beginner's luck but so far I have had no issues. I was told to get a copper trowel (and other garden tools but they are so expensive I just got a trowel) and I have had barely any slugs. It may be a coincidence but others have commented how I seem to have so few and asking why. I have put down beer traps and over one week have caught maybe 6 slugs in total (I have 4 down). As I say it may be a total coincidence but happy no plants have been destroyed and I got to pick my first sowing of radishes yesterday

My sweet peas look as sad as yours but am leaving them in - I might just add some more, taking care not to plant too close as they might compete for root space! I also didn’t get any cornflowers from the packet I sowed direct! 😢 I may try growing at home and pricking out etc.

looking closer at the sweet peas it could just be slug damage where they've rasped away at the leaves but not eaten all the way through, there is a leaf miner that affects peas but the damage looks a bit different you see obvious tracery marks where they've eaten under the surface layer but never make actual holes all through the leaf, agree with keeping it real and talking about the problems you're doing it right the moaners can do one lol

From seeing various people on their plots, they ALL have slug problems. The current idea is either copper tape or webbing put around the beds/plants. The only thing I can do is remove the lower leaves and add coffee grounds, wood shavings, and the copper tape on the top of the boards. I have immediate access to my garden so just after sunset I go slug hunting.

Heya Emma, just a little note about your test tomato, I would either put some mulch or something around the base of the plant so the leaves don't sit on the soil, or take the lower leaves off that touch the soil. Also, I would vote for leave the sweet peas in, but also sow another lot just behind them :)

I’m glad you said that because I have been trying to sort my slugs and snails issues. This year seems to have a hell of a lot more. I watch you Channel to see how what stage you at and don’t feel so bad about mine. All my peas was Eaten yesterday. The foxes have also been having a good time - plus all the neighbours cats. It’s so depressing. But I am soldering on .

Emma someone on my allotment told me to use grit for slugs because they can't get scratches on them else they can't slither along.

U can plant u’r tomato plants much deeper than you think. Because they will develops more roots that way. Also u can cut away approximately half the root ball with no harm to the plant.😮

The one thing I wouldn’t describe as pretty is a celeriac 😂 it’s a narly strange looking entity. I’ve grown mine from seed for the first this year and I’m just in love with them! Soo excited for them but patience, they are a very slow grower. Love what you do, you are amazing❤❤❤

Hey Emma, love your content. Feel your pain with the slugs. As you keep your beds at ground level, have you thought about losing the wooden surrounds. That’s where mr slug hides in the day.

Garden in the country, have chooks its late autumn here, am letting the chooks free range from lunchtime each day, until my operation then their alternative run hopefully will have grown well. Am hoping they are giving the slugs a good going over, have had to net the carrot bed yesterday.

Hi Emma, Sweet peas can be pinched out so they get bushier, so if the snails have eaten the leaves they may be able to grow back. I often sow a fresh batch of seeds straight under the ones that are growing, and after a while you can see the new plants sprouting, so give that a try maybe? Also, remember we had a long wet season, so we are all suffering (apart from the experts). I can't deny that this year I have become the Essex slug and snail killer. I visited my friend's plot the other day and I found a group of about fifty big juicy snails hiding under some plants that had gone to seed. Well, there were at least 100 less snails when I left her plot...that's all I'm going to say about it. X

The best slug and snail repellent for me is , Sharp Sand , from a builders merchants. Or alternatively crushed eggshells .
