Definitely those tiles are not asbestos, I am old enough to know when asbestos tiles were used and they are not asbestos. Wish people would stop scare mongering. You have got rid of some very useful tiles.

As others have said previously the saw you are using to saw the tree was not meant to be used for that. Would be far easier to use the saw you found even as rusty as it was.

My first impression was asbestos when I saw the tiles. But looking again asbestos would not have that pattern on the back. They look more like the tiles you use inside a fire place before you install a fire place.

@@lindahedley9049the pattern is just glue.... If they look like tiles used in a fireplace.... i.e asbestos as its used for fire protection. The only way to know is get it tested. Better safe than sorry

100% the council should have the tiles removed if they are asbestos. You pay your allotment fee for a service part of which is keeping the place safe. You're doing a stellar job Emma. I'm as invested in your journey as I am in my own plot. Thank you for sharing your adventures.

Those ceramic tiles are dangerous, as you are likely to slip on them when they are wet, making you fall over and hurting yourself. If you think they are asbestos, (which IMHO they are not - simply spares from a house tiling job), then emailing the council will simply get them asking where you found them, etc, etc. Those tiles would need to be about 40 years old, made of vinyl (plastic) or asphalt asbestos mix. They would be semi flexible, and after years outside would have started to breakdown. The ones you found are rigid ceramic tiles they did not add asbestos to ceramic tiles.

great dead hedge fencing, Emma. That was a lot of work. Might I suggest you pound in a few vertical stakes either side to maintain shape and stop spread? That way, it formalizes your hedge, and As needed you can stack pruned branches higher without worry it will fall over into the neighbours plot. You really have accomplished alot!

Hi, heads up about chopping trees down. I’m no expert but one of my books says use technique of undercutting to reduce any tearing of the branch as it falls. First cut should be from underneath the branch, upwards about 12inches from trunk. Second cut slightly above 1st cut, so they nearly meet. This should prevent branch from tearing off. Enjoying your allotment adventure. 😊

Me and my partner are in our 60s and have asbestos roofing on an old stone shed. We painted it to prevent flaking. We don't think those tiles are asbestos Emma. If you can complain to the council who you pay and explain your outrage as you have young children who help you on the plot, they may send someone who will identify them for you. Being in an outdoor environment though, don't panic xxxx

  • @Anita6687

Hello Emma thinking about the branches you could maybe put post sized ones about a metre or more apart in the ground, and weave the smaller ones in between to make a nice fence. If you can borrow a shredder you could make your own material for your pathways which would sort a problem for you. With the bigger logs cut up you could save to make a rustic bench or give you valuable logs for a log burner for your new shed or to burn on your patio in front of it, just ideas hope that’s ok. Looking at the tiles I’m in the camp of i think they are slate as no visible fibres. Better to be safe than sorry though. You could put them in a pile against the fence on the edge of the communal path against the fence to flatten the weeds till they are collected. Plot is looking great you’ve worked so hard.

Asbestos names are a bit of a mouthful, so the different types of asbestos are often identified by colour: • White Asbestos (Chrysotile) • Brown Asbestos (Amosite) • Blue Asbestos (Crocidolite) This is what I’ve found Emma. I don’t think your tiles are asbestos and the pattern on the back also looks more like a modern tile.

Emma, I’m an older person who has come in contact with asbestos in the ‘90’s. Mine were insulated panels on the ceiling of an outside walkway and they were labeled ASBESTOS. Not heavy like yours. Asbestos has fibers. I really do not believe yours are asbestos. It seems as those there are many individuals on YT who are know-it-alls and encourage panic. Take care Emma! ❤

There's a high probability they aren't asbestos but you are a little misinformed as there's a few different types of concrete and I forget the plastic stuff they used to use for flooring too had asbestos added to them. There's roof tiles that used to contain it too. But TBF you're not singular in thinking that the soft tiles are the only type as it's a really common misconception. Only commenting to spread awareness, not to poke holes 🫂

One of my best buys was a cheap bowsaw from Aldi. It cuts tree branches with little effort an a reasonable one costa about a tenner It is better for branches because the teeth are coarse and so don't clog. They cut both directions not like your saw which only cuts as you push it. regarding asbestos My daughter had it dumped on her plot and the council couldn't clear it fast enough. Came down togged in space suits and took out 12 inches of soil as well. Never cost her anything
