Kitchener waterloo st jacobs etc Mennonites, and cops on horses too for many yrs...they would go past our house actually. One time It snorted n scared the sh outta me it's head was right at the open window near me. We also had a horse n carriage roll through downtown for our wedding. Same ones used in the parades. Nyc has em too Not mark btw.

@@MrHemi4spd Because it's true, if you only factor the horse as being used for transportation any other form of energy from modern transportation is better. You can turn off a car engine, you can;t do that with a horse when you are finished with it, well you can but you can only do it once.

@Dragon_Slayer_Ornstein it's not true at all. A horse can not even come close to the pollution caused by a vehicle in its entire lifetime, even with shutting the vehicle off periodically. You and the other poster only think of the CO emission pollution, with that whole greenhose gas arguement. What about the brake dust that a vehicle produces in its lifetime that something like a horse produces zero of??? Horses also don't produce NOx gasses. To try and compare the two emissions demonstrates the lack of knowledge you have on the subject.

@blobmonster9494 In many places you have to ride along a road and cross roads to get to where you can safely ride. When I lived in southern California, we had to ride along a road and at one place I leased, push the stoplight button to cross a busy road. Not all horse owners have trucks and trailers. And people who ride regularly don't usually take their horses in a trailer to do so. Legally, horses have the right of way. Sadly, many drivers are not aware of that. Yes, accidents can happen. But more accidents happen in cars and we don't ban them. And people on bicycles are at just as much risk of bad drivers as horses are. The only people I ever knew who had a car-horse accident were hit by a drunk driver going way over the speed limit. And I've had horses since 1978.

@@Briselance 1 bail of hay a week, 1.5 large scoops of grain a day, and if you have the land (approximately $100 a week, max)... grass cuts that down a decent bit (unless they founder). Vet/Farrier fees can be high, but in the end, so is gas and car maintenance is way more expensive.

I live in a rural area, but i still get excited seeing horses and wildlife. We humans need animals! They calm our nervous sysyems and bring joy to our souls.

In Massachusetts there’s even a chapter of the drivers manual dedicated to horses and other lesser uses means of transportation. Tells drivers how to behave around them, pass them slowly with lots of room, don’t use your horn, etc. It blows my mind that this happened to this lady and glad the situation was resolved!

I think from my observation, common sense in the USA, is not the same as the UK.

When I was a kid and as a teenager, we used to ride our horses into town all the time and no one said a word. As long as you are being safe and clean up after them, there should be no issues.

As someone who lives in an area with a population of Amish people who routinely drive their horse drawn vehicles through town no one here has a problem with it you learn to safely navigate around them on the streets. Having horses in town is not a problem.

I live in Bartlesville, OK. We have an old cowboy that rides his horse around town on all types of streets and traffic conditions. He sometimes has a lever action rifle in a saddle scabbard. He always rides slow, he always follows the law. A couple of years ago there was an outcry about him being armed. The police and sheriff were well aware of him and had no problems. He had become an often seen sight and most people, including me, enjoyed this “time-gone-by” sight. After much initial fuss, it was declared that he breaks no law and shall be allowed to continue. Yea!! 👍👍

Cops abusing their authority & pushing government overreach…..it’s a tale as old as time. Thankfully, this lovely little town seems to have elected a sensible, humble mayor.

It's time to jail everyone who works for any public office. Take our country back! NOW!

The root problem is drivers dont feel they have to share the rd with any other mode of transportation other then cars .

Passing laws out of 'concern' that the person you are making illegal will hurt themselves. The ultimate Karen move.

I rode my horse everywhere when I was a child because I didn’t want to ride my bike 🚵‍♀️. I lived in a rural area so there wasn’t really anyone to complain. I think you do have to be prepared to pick up after your horse 🐴 which is inconvenient but necessary 💩. I have to do it a couple of times per day for my dog. Really glad this got worked for everyone. 👍☮️🌞🐎

That woman who complained is the sort pf person the police should ignore. She's the type who uses them tp harass people, and this is a good example.

Concerned for her safety? She could have made an effort to make sure everyone knows how to react to horses on roads. Like gone and told Police to please advice motorists to pass wide and slow etc. But no. Karen needed to be Karen.

Good on you Mayor. I am from a small town in and we still have bylaws on the books that state all businesses on main street must have a hitching post.

Glad the Mayor got involved..now the police need to find out the laws 1st!

The way the horse bumped the mayor when he said she could ride her horse!!! Animals are so in tune.

My mother and her siblings were raised in Alberta, and horses were their transportation, from the farm to school in town, and around town. Grandpa and Grandma homesteaded in Alberta in the early 1900s.

Hope someone at the police department was held accountable for blowing this out of proportion instead of having an adult conversation.

If your I.Q. Is too high, it will disqualify you as an officer. They don’t want officers who use their brain; only ones who follow orders. An ‘adult conversation’ is usually out of the question. Just exercising authority. Flexing muscles.

Not the police department. Peace Officers/Bylaw Officers are hired under contract by the town. Most local policing in Alberta is carried out by the RCMP.

Back in 70's a lot of people rode horses in Cranbrook BC, including me and my friend. We were about 13 years old at the time. NOT one person complained. If horse went poop we cleaned it up. But, Its actually great Fertilizer if kicked into bushes where plants are. Super ECO friendly.

In Germany we have had in Frankfurt an old arabic mare, she was on the Walk everyday alone. She got a letter on the halter: I don't run away, I just go for a walk... Everyone in Frankfurt knows "Jenny" And respect her

My thoughts exactly. When they interviewed that lady, she just reeked of busy body, probably an HOA president also. The police ride horses in the city also, and she has her horse trained, so leave her alone.

If that Karen is so worried why dosent she inform herself directly with the owner. The Karen knows more about horses than the actual owner? I bet no.

In our small town in central California, there was a young girls riding group who rode their horses in town on the sidewalks and roads and it was such a common sight, nobody gave it a second thought!!!

and when a car slides into the horse and the horse has to be put down i hope she gets charged for her stupidity

Good on you Shelby. Here in Houston, Texas the Livestock Show and Rodeo is about to begin and our metropolis will have horses on the streets in great abundance. I’m a police officer here and I can’t believe, never mind, as a Lieutenant I can believe it was a problem. Someone like Rhea complained, some supervisor didn’t know what to do, and by the seat of their pants made up an anti horse ordinance. I see it too often.

You can't get anymore green then this!!!! I support you!!!

She should be allowed to, if bikes are allowed, then so should horses be allowed, and if police horses don't have to pick up their poop, why does she?

Horse poop can be easily controlled with a poop bag attached behind the horse. No biggie. And, if the poop happens to be in front of your house, pick it up and add it to the soil of your garden like my dad and mom used to do in Maastricht in the 1950s when bread and milk was still delivered with horse drawn wagons.

This will be the most Canadian thing I will see all week. I'm glad to see she challenged their ordinance all the way.

I live near Lancaster, PA where we literally have horse and buggy parking at the Target and other stores, and we get way more traffic than this place appears to. The fact this town’s peace officers had enough time on their hands to threaten a single rider with JAIL TIME over riding a horse into town just shows this as a case of hand-wringing busybodies who don’t have actual problems to worry about.

At the end when she said, "as long as I'm allowed to," it hurt me inside. Don't let government rule your life anymore. It isn't needed and causes more harm than good by far. Keep riding, no matter what.

Your infatuation with authority being outside of yourself is what has created a weak and subservient society that passively watches its governments and others do what they have done. Good for her! No she won't back down. And good for the Mayor for stepping up to the plate to protect her right to ride her horse in town.

Good for her and the horse. The lady claiming she is worried about her safety needs to realize you can be safe and avoid the horse and follow your traffic laws, you do not decide what's legal and whats illegal just because you are worried about her safety. As for the cops, mind your business and learn the law, do your job and serve the people or find another job. Finally the mayor, best mayor I have seen in all of Canada yet. Keep up the good work mayor and Shelby, keep riding.

It not that the cops should mind their business it’s that they should have went to the council like the mayor said instead of getting legal advise. They just made the wrong move. They were probably only bothering her because of people like that lady they showed complained to them.

This is also an experienced horse rider and she isn't dealing with too many cars either. I think that lady should worry about real problems instead. Drivers being drunk or looking at their phone are more of a problem than this. Why didn't she mention that as well?
