It’s the end of another tour, so we’re once again turning to the phone lines for a Chapo call-in show. So, thanks for the questions, enjoy the answers. And a special thanks to everyone who came out to these live shows, they were some of our best ever.
We’ll probably do more calls in the future now that we have an easy method for cataloguing and searching calls, so feel free to send in more under-30-second audio recording questions to calls@chapotraphouse.com

For funny history moments, there was that one king who was stabbed to death in the ass while on the shitter. And William the Conqueror was hated so much that after he died no one wanted to bury him, so his corpse sat out in the sun and bloated until it exploded.

That is a basic tenet of Stoicism, and let's just say that Stoicism is a little bit problematic of a philosophy. Are you getting a niggling feeling that you are participating in a system that might be doing extreme harm? Don't worry about it, you don't have control over it. Keep on participating. Stoicism is a great philosophy for the PMC and elites. Christianity's promise of heaven after suffering in life is for the poors. I'm more of an Epicurean and Marxist myself.

For whatever it's worth, probably not much, it was the battle of Leyte Gulf, and the phrase was "Where is, repeat, where is Task Force Thirty Four? The world Wonders." Which is actually funnier than what Matt said. And the reason Halsey was upset was not because the command (CINCPAC) was mad at him, it was because he left the transports completely unguarded and becaue he wouldn't get the "big battle" he had always wanted his entire professional life. Anyway, whatever. Correcting the record on the internet is a fool's game, and I guess I'm the fool this time.

The fact that there are millions of disenchanted, highly impressionable young to middle-aged men out there just waiting on a messiah to tell them what minefield to throw themselves at should terrify anybody. “I am not afraid of an army of lions led by a sheep; I am afraid of an army of sheep led by a lion.” -Alex the G

1:07:01 The story was actually that during the Philippines Campaign in 1944 (when the US returned to liberate its former colony from the Japanese occupation), the Imperial Japanese Navy launched an enormous, 3-prong counterattack. The USN spotted the IJN forces as they approached and split their force into three parts to deal with it. The old, slow battleships went south to cut off the southern force while the fast carriers and fast battleships went north to attack the Japanese northern force (which unbeknownst to Halsey was bait; the carriers were loaded up with outdated planes and untrained pilots and got slaughtered), while a token force of slow destroyer escorts and escort carriers (codename Taffy 3) were left behind to cover the landing forces and hunt for submarines. Halsey felt confident that such a weak force could hold the center as he was under the impression the IJN's center force was driven away by an air attack which sunk the battleship Musashi. Halsey was then convinced to detach his fast battleships (code name Task Force 34) from his fleet and ordered them to be sent to hold the center, but due to a miscommunication, those battleships weren't available. Fast forward some time later and suddenly Taffy 3 is under attack from the IJN's center force-it hadn't actually turned around. They start frantically asking for Task Force 34 (the fast battleships they were told they had available). Now, at the time, messages had a prefix and suffix appended onto them in order to fool decryption efforts. This particular message had the prefix "TURKEY TROTS TO WATER" and suffix "THE WORLD WONDERS". The guy decrypting the message correctly identified the prefix but kept the suffix appended to the message since he was unsure if it was part of the intended message or not. Then, the message was relayed to Halsey, who sees the message: WHERE IS, REPEAT, WHERE IS TASK FORCE 34? THE WORLD WONDERS. And to be fair to Halsey, this would be a tremendous slap in the face and could've been the critical minutes in which he career ends along with the lives of tens of thousands of men under his command. If Taffy 3 is being attacked by a force this powerful, *obviously* they're about to be wiped out along with the landing fleet, which means potentially the deaths of 100,000+ men and the total failure of the Philippines campaign. It would all tie back to his leadership and his failure to leave the fast battleships behind, and this message would become the defining L of his career... ...But then miraculously, Taffy 3 wins the battle. Comprised of just slow destroyer escorts and some unprotected, slow escort carriers, they drive off a force whose flagship has a greater displacement than their entire force combined. Halsey goes down as one of the most decorated admirals in USN history.

There are big forces at work on everybody's lives, some people get squeezed way harder than others, by different forces (for any number of reasons), not everyone is able to cope or adapt, and everyone already knows all this! People just really love shitting on fat people, because it's an acceptable group to shit on with no negative consequences. Which is great news if you're a smug cunt, but it's clearly not working if the desired outcome is healthier people. It doesn't matter how much you think someone deserves to be shamed, it's not cool and it doesn't even work! I'm sure plenty of people would even respond to tough love but that's not what they're getting from mean comments on social media lol Obviously the best solution for most people is sufficient exercise and better eating, and obviously the buck stops at the individual. Feelings aren't the whole equation. But do we really live in a world where everyone has a fair shot at individually figuring out their health, without considering anything outside their willpower? Couldn't it all be easier, with better government policies and/or less bullying and shit, and therefore leading to a healthier society for everyone? Sorry for reading extremely into a two sentence KZread comment but come on, Jack

@@UntoTheBreach24 At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Wait, one of the problems of the modern age is that there are too many streaming services to subscribe to? Man, we have it so hard these days.

Cormac McCarthy? Ad Astrum? Disappointed the Chapo boys think those are good (I think this is the ep where Will quotes from Cormac and mentions he likes Ad Astrum).
