Art/Animation by Emily Halaka @emilyhalaka
We start off with some Law & Order: SVU talk that flows into a discussion of crime paranoia that cost the Democrats the house in suburban Long Island. Then, America’s epidemic of loneliness and corrupt hustlers trying to scam people into unnecessary for-profit hospice care. Grim! So we lighten up the back half of the ep with some more listener questions.

The only complaints about crime that municipalities and legislators care about come from business and property owners; people whose 2 hobbies are raising rents on their investment properties, and then loudly wondering where all these dang *homeless people* keep coming from.

I absolutely love how Stabler leaves SVU too. His last episode ends with him shooting a child in the precinct in front of everyone and he just bows his head in shame. His bosses then give him an ultimatum of get therapy or quit and he calls their bluff and quits offscreen. Shits hilarious

One SVU episode I remember is the episode where they are looking for some gay guy who I think is spreading HIV on purpose & Ice-T is speaking to a dude and the dude corrects Ice and tells him that he is not gay, he is a straight man who has sex with men. Ice T replies back: I got news for you - that means you're gay!

IKR. I'm in that box too.
I was always skeptical of the crime hysteria and then when I took some class about criminology that was taught by a old jaded police officer it only made my position more solidified. American Suburbanites are freaked out that they'll be trafficked or killed by MS13, when its about 10 times more likely that they'll be abused and killed by their own relatives. They agonize over home invasions when a whole family being killed in a murder suicide or domestic violence incident is statistically more likely to happen. When I was working EMS I can say the scariest calls before Covid were the ones related to domestic violence. A dude in a wifebeater with a gun or attack dog is pretty damn scary. Not to say gang violence doesn't happen, of course it does. But in the US specifically, it doesn't effect these people who live in White Affluent neighborhoods. Honduras and Mexico are very dangerous countries with a lot of narco violence, but its not happening here despite how many MAGA Boomers will be posting grisly cadaver images all over their Facebook.

Exactly, 90% of all violent crimes happen in neighborhoods where the medium annual income is below the poverty line. After I learned that stat I realized that everything I ever was told about crime was 99% obfuscation and propaganda

Search the old Chapo bit about the Villages. Some journo went down to this horrible gated community in Florida called the Village to talk to some of the suburban hogs. They interviewed some old dude and his equally ancient wife who always left their gated community strapped since they were convinced that everywhere outside of their little hog pen was basically anarchy because Obama let a bunch of Mexicans just flood over the border. Upper middle class piggies are just pathetic.

"Why I Left the Left"
I seem to remember 90’s television was like 90% crime. I remember being like 10 years old and being terrified of crime after watching Unsolved Mysteries. I honestly thought someone was going to break into our house and slit my entire families throats for no reason. It’s fucking crazy to be reminded every now and then that really hasn’t gone away, it’s just that people live in different media bubbles and some of those are still in world similar to the 90’s TV world I lived in once if not worse, because you could honestly immerse yourself in this shit 100% of the time, at least when I was a kid there was a new Simpsons episode or whatever.
Damn that’s more fun than Civ V with the Brave New World expansion pack.
Love how Felix pronounces "cosine" to rhyme with "bosun".
Living on a Border State I see some neat Mexican snacks and stuff, even their sodas are better because they use actual sugar instead of corn syrup. Also my military relatives vouch for snacks from Japan and Korea. America is only the Snack Country of the world because of how we sell our shit by the pallet.

I wish I had a decent way to express my thoughts about the loneliness thing, because Matt's horror at the machine is obviously justified. The point they were making is that the correct moral stance is neither "let the unhoused sleep on the sidewalk" nor "put spikes everywhere to keep the unhoused out of sight." The correct move is "find the unhoused somewhere to live." Of course, that means the most visible threat of poverty goes away. Can't have that. Always gotta' keep the threat in the frame.
