I can remember driving by this building with my parents wheni was a child in the late 60"s and seeing the Mr. Peanut statues along the top of the roof. i dont know when the building was torn down but if anyone saved some of those statues from the rooftop they would be worth some serious money to collectors.

That was AWESOME and STUNNING!!!! The architecture, mouldings, medallions, stairways, fireplace...... all where magnificent!!!! Wonder how many people stood on that landing waiting for a train???... how many outlaws held up the train station???? Depressing to see such things demolished... just gets me misty eyed. Some folks just don't care about such things.... I'm so glad you go to these places and "take us" with you. Thank JP❤

Very disappointing that the building is left to rot. This is where peanut processing history was made. Planters should refurbish the building into a museum.

Planters ceased to be Planters in 1961, when Standard Brands took it over. Suffolk, Virginia, its other major manufacturing location was lucky. It still has a plant, but not without a fight with its subsequent owners, RJR Nabisco, then Kraft, then KraftHeinz. Fortunately, Planters is now owned by Hormel.

My great aunts, Rosa and Alice Worrell worked here in the 1940`s and lived across the street from the plant, this is where they relocated to after leaving their home of Seaboard and Margarettsville , NC, Aunt Rosa would always bring chocolate covered peanuts to all us children when she came home to visit. I was wondering if there is an photo Archive of the plant workers.

JPVideos Suffolk had a planters plant too: In 1913, they built a new processing plant in the heart of peanut farming territory in Suffolk, Virginia. Part of Obici's success was in marketing and finding new products to add to Planter's stock. Obici and his wife also moved to Suffolk in their later years.

@@JPVideos81 When Obici's wife died in 1938, Amedo Obici decided to memorialize his wife by building a hospital in Suffolk, Virginia, where the couple lived after they were married in 1916 and Planters had its major manufacturing facility when Obici first built its peanut processing plant to the peanut marketing region of Tidewater in 1913 and soon expanded to several plants there. The hospital itself did not open until 1951, after Obici died in 1947, as there were issues with Louise Obici's will and a court battle ensued as late as 1948. She actually returned to live in Wilkes-Barre two years before she died, as she grew apart from her husband. Being a devout Roman Catholic, however, divorce was not an option. None of this was revealed until after Obici's death.

Love the drone footage as well as the inside filming. The history of this location is really interesting. Shame as always to see buildings left unused. Shame the city of Wilkes-Barre hasn't, for whatever reason, turned this location into affordable housing, public facilities such as a library, meeting places/low-rent offices for community groups etc (Same with all the abandoned properties we see in your wonderful videos.

At one time , "Peanut capital of the world "....that is a distinction that shouldn't be taken lightly . It's something to be proud of and an amazing note of history for the area. The front facade of the building is gorgeous. It looks like it would have made a beautiful Library ... Squatters left plenty of garbage but no graffiti ...seems unusual there is no tagging . It has been two years since you made this informative video. Do you know the fate of the building ? Has it survived ?

What a shame.. this beautiful building just sitting there with no care given. They could re-purpose it without damaging the original structure and perhaps make a community center, office space, perhaps a place for wedding receptions, company functions, or any number of things. Such history and beauty allowed to deteriorate because it is no longer useful to them, yet across the street old buildings are seemingly used for businesses. It looks so lonely... very sad

I drove by this location so many times and never realized that at one point Planters had such a presence in this area. Shame that the city of Wilkes-Barre is letting this building rot. It could be turned into a Planters museum if the structure is still sound enough to be re-used. I'm sure there's some folks who would go on a tour of the place and make the city at least some money on it instead of letting it sit.

No doubt. That's the usual M.O. of this area with properties of possible historicsignificance. Throw up a plaque at the site(already done at the Planters site and Rocky Glen) and then bulldoze whatever is left into the ground.

  • @CheapestGamer

With Rocky Glen though it's a case of the current owner of the property having a death grip on it and refusing to give it up. Mind you at this point there's nothing left and any company trying to start over with a park(or any development) there would have to build back up any infrastructure.

The owners, who are listed as an LLC out of NJ are waiting until the housing market rises and want to develop it into private lake front homes. Thats at-least the word going around. I know several bids were put in to purchase the property by private investors and they were turned away. We have an annual tour there every November to walk around and discuss the history and location of things. Your welcome to come to the next one.

So sad, this is what Liberal Democracy does, I would buy the place fence it in and restore the building and turn it into a home/business with a beautifully restored facade and iron work, complete down to the old school goldleaf numbers and letters on the front with some copper accents and lighting at so the Planters name can be seen and honored!
