One of my few good memories as a child was going to the Planters store when my mother took me shopping downtown. This was the 1950s before there were malls or shopping centers. The shop was right across the street from Bienville Square, the downtown park. I got to sit and feed the squirrels and pigeons, and you could smell the delicious aroma of freshly roasted peanuts for blocks. Now, I'm 71 and one of my greatest joys in life is sitting on my porch feeding the squirrels, groundhog, crows and other animals.

In the 70s there was a large glass enclosed booth on the boardwalk in Asbury Park (NJ) that sold Planters products and some Mr. Peanut souvenirs. In the late 80s I moved to SE VA a few towns away from Suffolk which was home to a big Planters factory. It had a black wrought iron fence around it. On the top of each of the "spears" of the fencing was a little Mr. Peanut.

I grew up in Akron, Ohio and remember the store well. It was in a different location decades ago but I looked on Google maps and found "The peanut shop" near the baseball stadium downtown. Warm, salted, roasted peanuts are unknown today by kids and young adults and YES they are missing a great snack choice by never having eaten them.

There was a Planter's store on the boardwalk in Atlantic City NJ and maybe even Ocean City NJ. When I was a kid in the 60s-70s I would love going there. We also knew that if Mr. Peanut was outside waving you always got a "prize" if you went up and said hello. The prize was a token, usually in the shape of the mascot and usually made of plastic. I remember getting a green salt and pepper set. You unscrewed the hat to fill it. I can't remember what else they gave away but I know they are highly collectible now. They also roasted the peanuts in the window, always drawing a crowd. Fun memories.

When I was a kid in the 60s, the Woolworth's in my town had a Planter's concession, and every day, a guy dressed up like Mr Peanut would walk back & forth in front of the store, waving at passers-by. You could smell the peanuts every time the front door opened.

As a child I would go to the Planters stores in Pittsburgh and Washington DC and would get my favorite spanish peanuts. The store in DC was near the White House and there was a giant Mr. Peanut statue in the doorway and they had a huge neon one that waved continuously at you from the over head marquee. You could smell the roasting peanuts long before you got to the store. And you could watch them roast peanuts in the window there too. In San Francisco on the edge of the Bayshore Freeway there was the Planters plant and you could smell those peanuts roasting for miles too. Sadly they closed the plant and now its a U Haul storage.

No matter which company you talk about, the end is almost preceded by... the company was acquired by....... that seems to spell the end of mos of these historic companies - or in Planters case, most of the retail outlets anyway. Thanks for the video!

@Michael Klouser I think that the founders of a company can only take it so far with their limited resources so they sell it to someone who can put more money into it for a profit, some do so to retire knowing that no one in their family wants it, Some may do so knowing that they had better sell while the going is good. some people know when a decline is coming with their product, so let a fool buy it while the price is high. :)

I was born after the Planter’s Peanuts stores were closed. There remained a huge Mr. Peanut on route 1 north in Peabody, Massachusetts. Eventually, the owner of the land wanted to get rid of the landmark and wanted someone to take the huge peanut, but there were no takers until someone from the southeast, I believe, that collected Planter’s memorabilia wanted to take it. We were all relieved that Mr. Peanut has a new home rather than ending up in a junk pile. 🥜

I fondly remember the Planters Peanut shop in Nashville on 5th on the corner of the Arcade that ran through the block to 4th. It always smelled SOOO good on the whole block. And it was fascinating for a 13 yo gadget freak to watch the roaster at work.

It is a shame that the only thing that is still in Wilkes-Barre on South Main St. Is the original office building. Left to decay do to urban blight. My Uncle who lived in New Jersey used to bring us saltwater taffy and take back about 200 pounds of Planters Peanuts in burlap bags because at that time during the 1960's you could not get Planters Peanuts in New Jersey. A bitter sweet video when life was good. Can still smell the aroma of the roasted peanuts. Thanks 👍

When I was a little kid my favorite place on the boardwalk in Atlantic City was Mr. Peanut. Inside they had a maze of overhead conveyors and machinery for bagging the peanuts. It seemed like you were actually walking though the factory. Of course they also had Mr. Peanut life size statues all over and the sold every kind of toy and utensils made in the shape of Me. Peanut.

I remember there was a neon Mr. Peanut sign along what is known as Hospital Curve on Highway 101 heading into San Francisco. Sadly it's long gone. And I have a couple of Mr. Peanut mechanical pencils from way back when. You could mail in a couple of small snack size peanut bags, (and this was when they were still really good), and get a mechanical pencil in return! It probably required a small amount of money as well, but my mother took care of that My older sister and I saved up our bags, and bought our baby sister a Mr. Peanut bank, which is also long gone. I'm sure my mother filled in whatever was required for that also. I used to love Planters Peanuts! Thanks for the interesting history!

President Jimmy Carter used to be a peanut farmer, so I'm wondering if maybe he could have sold some of his crops to Planter's. Or, maybe Planters had there own peanut farms. I remember that he said...or somebody said ...he had to divest himself from his farm while he was President of the United States. Another thing about peanuts is that back in the 60's we travelled to the area of Traverse City, Mi. on Lake Michigan and stopped to eat at a very quaint restaurant in a fishing village directly on the lake for a fish dinner. Everything was served family style in bowls and platters. One of the items was a salad made of boiled peanuts and frozen raw peas. The "dressing" was sour cream mixed with either Hellman's mayonnaise, or Kraft salad dressing. !!!OMG!!! That Peas and Peanut Salad was was so damn good, I ate the entire bowl full, and I ordered some to go. Over the years I have made this salad to take to picnics or large get togethers at church, or association meetings in the neighborhood. If you want to make this dish, just remember to boil the peanuts at least 12/15 minutes, rinse off the frozen peas in cold water to get rid of any frosty ice crystals. Then I put in about at least two tsps. of grated onion...mix it up with the dressing, then put it in the "ice box" at least 2/3 hours to meld the flavors together...over night is better if you have the time. At Christmas time, I chop up some red bell pepper and strew that over the top to make it look more festive. Well...I hope I haven't bored everybody with my long winded commentary...Anyway..."Merry Christmas to all, And to all a good night." Posted 12/22/'21

Perhaps I am overly nostalgic, but I vividly recall Planter's Peanut retail locations (in the 1970's and 80's), in Asbury Park and Atlantic City, NJ and even up until the early 2000's in Albany, NY. There is most definitely something about those stores and the iconic branding on those cans, that evokes memories of simpler better times.
