While it doesnt help much, knowing those two monsters are still in prison 24 years later, and have the rest of their lifetimes to go, gives some comfort to me. RIP Matt 💖

Matthew was a drug dealer of meth and he was killed for the drugs. Plenty of retelling of the truth on KZread if you look. Oof. I came out to my Mom on October 8, 1998. She was loving in her reply. We went for a walk with the dog and then came home and sat on the picnic table in the backyard as the sun set. I was sitting on the table and she was on the bench. She suddenly wrapped her arm around my leg and laid her head on my knee and quietly shed a few tears. I asked her what the tears were for. She told me that the world can be a cruel place. That she was worried that I would be the victim of hate/violence. It was a precious moment. And then a few days later the story of Matthew Shepard really broke and became national news. It was a very hard time for my mom (and me). I will always remember my coming out story coinciding with this tragedy and it bringing me and mom closer. Tori Amos would later write a song called Merman which she would dedicate to Matthew Shepard in her concerts. While the lyrics are quite elusive, the song itself is just gorgeous and is a perfect anthem for any special person gone too soon. Thanks for covering this one 💕

This case breaks my heart every time. I’m constantly in awe of his parents’ incredible strength and advocacy. And every time I hear iterations of ‘the gay panic defense’ being used I’m just disgusted. My time living in in a well established LGBTQ+ community were the best and most liberating years of my life after growing up and finishing high school in a much more conservative, ‘don’t ask don’t tell’ area of Sydney where as a woman, attitudes towards me or my friends being open about anything outside completely heteronormative thought or behaviour was labeled as attention seeking, being ‘slutty’, or some kind of spectacle for our peer groups to gawk at like we were a carnival freak show for their entertainment. Taking a girl to my tenth grade formal was treated like tabloid gossip, and that was in 2003. Living in a different environment that was open, supportive, non judgmental and where the entire community even if they personally weren’t LGBT stood up for everyone’s rights and freedoms allowed me to grow into adulthood not feeling I should hide anything or be ashamed. The fact we still need and have communities in every major western city to embrace who we are and feel safe to be open about our sexuality after so long and all the progress that has been made is so sad though and shows how far we still have to go.

The idea that the activists thought the author was homophobic isn’t flawed because the author of the book has internalized homophobia. You can definitely be prejudiced against your own kind of people and he definitely was to write this book. He’s as hateful as the church members cuz who asked you to smear his name? I’m gay. He ran into them on my 3rd birthday. Having said that, I knew some details of the case but never wanted to go into it much. This case is very personal to me. I had no idea he was tiny at 5’2”. That’s what makes me more mad. They wanted to beat up a gay guy for fun. They hated gays so much to point where they inserted themselves into a gay friendly space. This case makes me mad to the point where there are no words. Edit: I’m not sure if he stopped growing, but 5’2”? That is cruel and evil. He was more than likely weaker than the monsters. I’m mad. I’m mad. The poor thing. I would be so ugly. Matthew’s parents have a notion of grace; I would never have suggested to leave the death penalty behind. Aaron deserves it. I definitely remember when this story happened, I was just about to enter my final months of middle school and believe me everybody that I knew regardless of where they were on whatever scale were all horrified by this. We have family ties in Colorado, going back several generations, mostly around Boulder and Brush, Colorado. Our family is kind of old-school and somewhat traditional. But I'll never forget when the story broke. We were all sitting and eating dinner and we stopped in our tracks and listened to what happened to this poor kid. Regardless of anybody's feelings about it. I had never seen my parents so shaken. Our neighbors came over too and one of them who had known my family for a long time just looked white as a ghost. None of us knew the Shepherds, but coming from that part of the country, especially the more rural areas. You have a bond with people out there and we were all utterly beside ourselves with shock and anger at these two animals and that's what they were. I'll never forget the look on my dad's face. He just shook his head and said: "You know how we raised you, son, with love and faith....there is nothing that those boys did that God approves....they are evil." Westboro is NO "Church"

I followed the case with earnest bc I was growing up in a place just as narrow minded as where Mathew grew up. I was tormented and I remember being freaked out by this too. I have a big problem with the 'it was all about drugs' insinuated in the book and here is why. When Aaron was being tried, he came up with every single excuse in the book as to why the crime was justified or at least what the extenuating circumstances. If it WAS all about drugs, then Aaron would have used that excuse as it would have dropped the hate crime label and could possibly have allowed for parole after say 30 years. So no, maybe drugs played some part but I truly believe it was initially all about bigotry and hate and going to Mathew's house and stealing any drugs was an afterthought.

Like they name their source but I can't find those sources available to the public. The like in the same breath that they are defending every word in the book they're making these accusations and I don't know what to think of any of it now.

This release is vital as hell for the discourse going on right now. I hope you will not mind me referencing this during a stream/discussion. I remember when this happened and how much of a warning call this was, especially since we don't live far away... Part of why I want to include it is specifically because younger people these days are distanced enough at this point to think it is a historical story, with no familiarity with the fear or with the fact that this man's death was one of the loudest calls to action for the modern queer community and is directly responsible, alongside Brandon Teena (are you releasing one on him too??) And his death, for the political changes that we've been witness to for the last 20 years. A sad time, a horrible legacy, but a life of high value and consequence. It still makes my stomach flip to think about this report in the news.

These are people that wake up every morning unlike Matthew, they breathe free air, they drive their cars, have coffee, cupcakes, celebrate birthdays and Christmases while having hate in their disgusting hearts. They’ve done it all over the country. Not just at LGBTQ+ or more left leaning events, but even at military funerals and stuff. They are universally hated by not just the lgbtq community and allies, but even a lot of right leaning people. They’re disgusting and bizarre. Almost got whooped at my college campus years ago because they showed up with a massive version of their vile sign and it royally pissed us off. Haven’t heard much about them protesting at events or campuses since

Well Monsters team, you've finally done it! You've gotten big enough to draw out the haters... I've noticed recently an uptick in the amount of snarky and flippant comments about your content. I'm going to try not to feed the trolls so just keep doing what you're doing. I was a fresh 18 year old in my first apartment living with my (newly out) long time best friend and Matthew's story was all that was spoken about in our circle, it was a frightening time and as the internet was in its youth: news was slow and also not very reliable. Thank you for always handling these cases with care and respect

This one was really hard to sit through. Im not much of a crier but there were few moments through this one where there weren't tears streaming down my face. I had always known of Matthew, but never knew the full details of the horrors he went through. My heart truly aches for this man and his family 💔

It’s actually “The Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr., Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009”. I would actually like to see a video of Mr. Byrd’s case because I don’t know much about it and would like a deep dive into what could have possibly led to him being tied to a truck and dragged down the road.

OMG, yes! Both Matthew Shepard case and James Byrd Case brought me to tears when first heard about them. I sincerely would love it if Monsters would do a story/video about James Byrd. I had so many questions about James, the man, and his life. Jiles?

I don't know what the 2 had in common but James Byrd was lynched because he was black and Matthew Shepard was a gay white male who was killed by psychopaths trying to buy drug's. That's why alot of black folks didn't understand why Obama attached this case to a anti black hate bill SMH if anything he should've took Jeffrey Dahmer's victims in consideration because they were targeted because they were black and also LGBT.
