Totally agreed. Customer service people who mindlessly respond with “I understand” when I express a concern on a situation has become one of my many pet peeves.

I understand.
That’s a valid point about listening to respond and useful to life beyond negotiation.
This guy is the man, this information is so crucial I don’t think people get how crucial it is.

I hear that you want a way to apply this new knowledge. My guess is because it's about listening a list would keep you in your head and focusing on your desires. I definitely responded imperfectly but I hope this perspective helps
Is this a bad time to wish the Black Swan team a Happy Thanksgiving?

Nice one
True. Don't you hate it when someone is only listening to respond.
Stems from ecclesiastical training: removing all of the vanity; me, my, mine, & I out of one's speech. So in word: to deny self in the pursuit of our LORD Jesus Christ to adorn the master's perfection like armor and be an acceptable offering to our heavenly Father. For if the good LORD God could be for us, Who could be against us in any negotiation? God bless black swans.
I like these negotiation tips Chris. Thanks. One thing you should consider is that the majority of people in the world who negotiate in English are not 100% fluent in understanding. And I would suggest that negotiation between different cultures requires a more subtle view in able to teach people these strategies. Listening to understand is the first step for many non English speakers, then a listening to respond is the second. Time is needed and also time to think is a strategy we can benefit from. There was an article in the economist a few years ago explain the different cultures and strategies used by people whose first language is not English, which its about 90% or all people who need to negotiate I would guess, in the world. The article showed how much better non natives are at negotiating. Sorry I do not have the link but I used it with my diplomats. Listening requires an aspect of thought and silence or pausing, for want of a better word, and I would like to know, as a negotiation strategy, if you have anything that could help these people. Thanks again.
I'm from kenya 🇰🇪 and it seems you are the kind of persom that would look to hear 'that's right' from the person you're talking to just to make them feel understood.
Been a Black Swan student for a while and I still make these mistakes.

What is the collor of a young black swan?
Thanks, Chris. As someone who is more inclined towards engineering and philosophy, this all makes complete sense: I've been doing pretty much exactly the opposite of what I'm "supposed" to be doing. Basically, this tells me that sincerity and honesty are not sought. Says a lot about human beings.
Happy thanksgiving 🍁 could you do a video on how to communicate with toxic family during the holidays?
Worse than "I understand" is "I hear you". That always irritated me! On the surface I thought: What are you usually deaf or am I a low talker? But the real problem is what it says underneath: "Yeah, yeah, I hear your B.S. and I don't care".
Listening is the tool that drives empathy, and empathy is the key, to getting the most out of the deal, for everyone who is involved.
This stuff is awesome. I've been droping No oriented questions at work; looks like stuff that previously wouldn't even budge, way above my paygrade will now change signifficantly (it was about delegating entire process to anohter team, so that ours could focus more on core responsibilities). And that knowledge is free.. I mean, come on

Question! Is there gonna be a sequel to NSD? Even about another topic? I've listened to the book around 35 times and know it by heart, it's like I'm chasing the dragon to get that feeling I had during the first read in 11/2019! Life changing book!

Late to the game. In order to get me out of the habit of i understand because everything you said about it is true. I substituted it with. my understanding with what your saying is...
"I understand" is a great phrase when your boss has given you your marching orders, not during a negotiation
