I like the cinder block perimeter. It doesn't get as messy from rain splash like painted siding. And, having the wood part of the structure up high, helps keep wood rot at a minimum. And, it enables use of less expensive standard length studs to achieve higher ceiling clearance. The construction labor is a little higher, but that's a one time expense.

Smart move putting that safety harness on Ken. I'm 72 now and will no longer climb on to a roof - in fact I just listed my ladders & scaffold gear for sale on Facebook tonight. Once we get past 50 - 55 YO our reaction times slow down and we're more prone to slipping and sliding than the young blokes are. What is worse is that we are also more prone to break a bone or strain a ligament and the recovery period is much longer for our older bodies. There is no way I could handle working outdoors in that climate. I spent most of my life in the tropics and although I moved to a colder state 6 years ago I still miss the heat.

Ken, do you pre-drill your metal roofing? A lot of people pre-drill the whole stack to keep the screw lines straight. Thanks

Love the channel! Can you tell me a little more about the concrete block install? Is the first course simply mortared down to the pad? Was vertical rebar drilled into the pad in some of the cores (before they were filled), to somehow tie them to the foundation? Just curious how that works structurally. Thanks!!

Aww, man, you scared me, I thought you had one of those magic snap tools like the the Pallet and Scrap man had, whew, dang, still you are doing pretty good, nice price on that garage.
I like that song. You should add the song track. That sage is a wonderful color. Another job well done.

Ken...will the owner finish off the CMU stem wall and if so, what material? Also, is there a footer under the perimeter of the slab or is the slab itself, supporting the stem wall?
Ken, do you pre-drill your metal roofing? A lot of people pre-drill the whole stack to keep the screw lines straight. Thanks
Love the channel! Can you tell me a little more about the concrete block install? Is the first course simply mortared down to the pad? Was vertical rebar drilled into the pad in some of the cores (before they were filled), to somehow tie them to the foundation? Just curious how that works structurally. Thanks!!

The homeowner did it they drilled and put pins into the slab to stop it from moving

I'm down for a hoodie - have worn out a favorite, which I have had since married 23 years ago (I know, shocked it still fits) and it's time for a new one to wear with as much love.

Been watching for awhile does the price you have on your videos include the concrete work also?
I enjoy the songs you do. Some time please do a segment on the ridge vent. Cutting the opening and the mesh you use.

Hi Ken, a few subscribers have complimented you due to your age (45?) but to me you’re still a youngster! However I guess falling off a roof still hurts a lot.....nice job on the carport, I guess it’s a type of cantilever roof, but much nicer to back into without having to worry about hitting the posts! Live long and prosper buddy🖖

Ken, how many days on site for this garage from bare lawn to finished product? I’d say they quality of your crew comes from both hiring the right, competent people and also their respect for you and your attention to detail. It’s easy to see you all work together as a well oiled machine.

Ken, It may have something to do with being 6'3" but I often wonder why more garages don't have higher doors. When you are starting from scratch, why not build in the extra capacity?
@kenskarpentry
3 жыл бұрын
We do quite a few taller ones. Quite often it’s budget
First time see you using cement blocks. Wonder what different function they serve.
Do you pre-drill your roof panels? I couldn't tell by watching. Thanks for the videos.

No we don’t predrill
17:05 Did you (do you) not use a ridge vent on this build? Just curious about the logic concerning when to use a ridge vent and when they are not required.
@kenskarpentry
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. The ridge has a mesh screening 5” wide the entire length
How do you water proof the screws that hold down the roof panels?
@kenskarpentry
3 жыл бұрын
There are rubber washers that seal it
Ken, what was the purpose of putting the chunks of concrete under the rebarb ?
@kenskarpentry
3 жыл бұрын
We use them as spacers under the rebar
Im not real good with tools It took you almost 20 mins to do it I think if i get some nice power tools i might be able to do it in an hour thanks to your tips

12’ is the most I’ve done.
Some time you might explain again that trick of equalizing the roofing widths by carefully screwing in the sheet metal. I did not understand it the first time.
