This brings back memories. I was a rougher for 14 years. I'm surprised you didn't go LVL on the garage header. Here in the north we put all we can on all walls before we raise them. When raising walls we would put a pull brace just in case it would get cut by the wind or a guy over pushed too far. We also would put the facia on before we would plywood. This would allow a good starting point for the first sheet. Code here is that have to flash the windows too. Sometimes I miss it but most of the time I don't cause I do remodeling now which usually inside. 12 pitches are brutal, no fun. Be blessed my friend

Just found your channel, and I’ve enjoyed every video I’ve watched so far (6). I’ve been a roofer for 20 yrs and I’ve taken on some carpentry projects over the years but nothing like this. Your explanations, details, showings and skills are giving me a little more confidence in a project like this. Near future plans are to buy 5-10 acres and build a live in garage. Fingers crossed

You can see how everything goes together. building the stud walls off site is a good idea. And the metal roof saves time and the mess with shingles. It's a nice clean look . Well done !!!

Your videos are like food for the soul....relaxing, informative, craftmanship and quality in a well paced video. I literally can fall asleep watching and listening to your videos (compliment in case that wasn't obvious). Nearly everything you explain in the video is something I was asking myself -- only to find the answer to my questions explained in nearly every video. Really enjoy these. Subscribed and liked. Keep up the great work.

I like the idea of "I" joists and whoever came up with the idea because it's simple technology, but yet it's far more stronger than a traditional 2*10 or 12 floor/ceiling joist. I'm not sure when they came out, but I would say 25 ish years ago because I was in the basement of a house that was built in the late 90s and had "I" joists. Pretty cool! 👍

Dear Ken, Im one of the proud subscriber of your channel and `i enjoy every video `i watched so far. `thanks for making this happen. My heart was pounding when you were on that ladder and I know you probably did this million times but for light hearted subscribers like me try to use some safety ropes. And teach us how to use it. I do have a request, could you please do few detailed/separate video on the tiny detailing we miss in the videos like ... 1:10 how do you mount the frames or attach it to the cement slab ( do you have pre installed bolt from the slab, just nail it!!! ... How does it withstand the entire weight!! ... 3:33 The i Beams, how do you make it, comparison with the plank vs plywood on these beams.... 19:00 how did you installed the last sheet!!! That ladder attachment was good details on that would also help ... 26:51 how/what did u do with this last piece + the plastic sheet ( i Guess you attached from inside but good to know from you). I know few of the views think these question are silly but as you know 99% of the viewer are not an experienced builder and the core purpose of this video is to share knowledge.... Happy holidays and Love from India ....

Ken, I am a big fan of you videos. I just watched this one the other day and I have a question. On the gable ends you put up the siding boards before you stood them up. Then later you started putting the siding from the bottom of the first floor. You said you did a calculation so the reveal would be the same once you got to the bottom of the gable ends. What in the world is that calculation? Just curious. Thanks

The nail comes through the bottom edge of the plate directly into the chalkline. That way it makes an excellent pivot point and when you tip the wall up the bottom plate sits flat on the floor

3rd Ike first to comment. Feel lucky. You're giving me the confidence to tackle a 24x30 cape with mini apartment above it. We'll see how it goes. Thanks for time and effort. Looking fed to a new building season. Any new techniques or machinery coming this season?

Love this, is there a place to buy plans? Would it be cheaper to build with concrete blocks on first floor walls, since the price of wood is outrageous now?

Very interesting and learned a good bit. I was wondering why use OSB for sheathing and not for flooring?

Ken, do paint the nail heads on the siding. Assume they are galvanized. Siding was stained, what procedure do you use. Good video, thanks

Ken, I don't understand how the door from the existing house ties into the garage and stairs. The video cover's it for a second. I would love to see a video or pics of that finished area of how the stairs and existing house looks.

Ken- I am trying to get an attached cape style garage with with office above and new entry between exiting house and garage but we have an elevation issue. Looks like you solved here. What was your floor height difference- garage floor to mud room floor? We are dealing with 5 feet difference. Love the garages and videos. Will you travel 4 hours... probably not. Thank you.

Awesome job. When you poured the concrete for this job was your foundation exactly 24x24 which made the inside measurements a little less ? Sorry for a dumb question.

  • @kenskarpentry
