2022 Hyundai Tucson review (inc. 0-100): The new benchmark SUV?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Australia exclusively gets the long wheelbase version of the 2022 Hyundai Tucson. But, is it any good? Paul Maric gets behind the wheel of the diesel 2022 Hyundai Tucson Highlander (there is also a petrol and a turbo petrol version) to see if it's any good.
What do you think about the design?

I would love to see comparisons of 'expensive' vs 'cheap' brand cars at the same price. For example, Kia Cerato GT: $37,000 , Base Audi A1 Sportback $38,600. These cars are comparable on price but rarely compared. There are many more of these comparisons possible where the top spec of the cheap brand is around the price of the base model of an expensive brand.

Always enjoy your reviews, your the best on the net. It amazes me that with all that technology, the new cars are still not including a built in dash cam. Also that the majority do not have cooling seats, particularly for the hot climate models, this facility would definitely influence my choice of manufacturer on my next car, living in Thailand.

After watching the many reviews of both the Tucson & the Sportage I finally took them both out for a test drive. Both the top spec N-line & GT-Line Diesel engines. I went into the tests fully leaning towards the Sportage and ended up coming out convinced the Tucson was the better vehicle. The interior was better in quality and finishing and the Bose sound system was far superior to the Harmon Kardon of the Sportage. The ride was more comfortable and I was just far more impressed by the Tucson. I have placed my order for the Highlander Diesel N-Line and am expecting it in 3-4 months.

As a new Hyundai Tuscon Elite 1.6T N-Line owner , major things I dislike about the car: - Passenger seat is not electric (pretty pathetic for a $48k car) - No wireless carplay (buy an adaptor) - Suspension is fairly stiff (good for curvy roads but you really need to slow down on bumps) - The sound system sucks - Poor engine tuning - going up our apartment carpark ramp the engine is underpowered, then engine waits 2-3 seconds, then the turbo kicks in too abruptly jerking the car up - Piano black is fingerprint magnet and easily shows dust (keep a microfibre cloth in the car) - No electric tailgate (no 360 cam or ventilated seats) The standard 2L N/A engine is just way too underpowered for this vehicle. Go with the 1.6T or diesel minimum. Besides that, its an awesome car. If you can afford it go with the Highlander.

  • @CarExpertAus

Thanks for that - always great to hear from owners! That jerkiness is the dual-clutch transmission. Part of the reason I'm not a fan of them. I have a similar set of ramps at our building and it always catches these cars out.

One thing they added to diesel that I really wanted was the parking assist (to help with tight parking). Hi Paul, test drove today 15 August the new Tuscon in all three engine forms. I must agree the 2.0L petrol is the least fun to drive, no power what so ever and tries hard to keep up with the traffic. When I test-drive a car I always drive the same route which includes 50/60km zones, 80km zones, 110km zones and also a 12% hill climb as part of the road between Noosaville and Cooroy in QLD. We drove the 2.0L petrol Elite first, slight bumps in the road and it gears back trying to keep the set speed in cruise control. The 12% climb made the car work hard to keep up resulting in 4200rpm revs while the engine was 'hunting' in order to maintain the speed. Then we drove the same route with the 2.0L turbo diesel, what a sweet ride throughout all parts of the route we normally drive. The 12% climb was easily done at 2000rpm - fantastic. as last we drove the 1.6L turbo petrol, also a very nice car to drive, very relaxed driving, a bit more aggressive than the other two, the 12% climb was overcome at 3100rpm but overall a very nice engine. My preference goes to the 2.0L turbo diesel, followed by the 1.6L turbo petrol and as last the 2.0L petrol - definitely not my choice of engine for this car. The 2.0L petrol and the 2.0L turbo diesel were both Elite's and the 1.6L. turbo petrol was an Elite N-line, didn't like the suede in the N-line prefer the leather seating. Thanks for your reviews, like the way you do these - keep up the good work.

What's your thoughts on the DCT? I've got one 1.6T as well and still haven't fully gotten used to it. Very jerky at lower speeds, constantly going back and forth between gears. I feel I'd have rather go for a torque converter transmission like the diesel one has. Though, on the highway it is a blast and fuel economy is great too.

@@FingerBoy10 when I first purchased it, it was terrible off the line, very jerky, with first to second gear changes jumping all over the place. My dealer told me there was a recall for the DCT which was fixed, new shimmies and a change in computer mapping. It’s helped quite a bit, but I still have a little jerkiness off the mark at times. I have to tramp the accelerator when I want to move quickly from a standstill. As for highway and country road speeds, no issues at all, changes smoothly, economy is excellent and smooth to drive. Handles very well too. Torque converters are better, but would have cost me a bit more to go the diesel, plus I would have had to wait longer. I wanted the car straight away… 😀

Yea I think Kia and Hyundai’s game is to be eye-catching, evidenced from their recent designs. I’m ok with new designs/larger grilles that some people complain about, but I feel the overall design needs to look cohesive and elegant, which as you mentioned ties in to “ageing well”. Personally I prefer the design language used on the Mazda3 sedan or Nissan Qashqai SUV’s, they look like they will remain modern for years to come without trying to hard having bends and folds everywhere.
