Picked mine up last Friday, obviously I love it! ❤❤❤❤ Edit: Bit of extra info, I commute 56km a day each way every day, 21km of that is off road. Handles the corrugated dirt road as if it was tarmac, super comfortable. I get 10.1L/¹⁰⁰k combo, and 7.0 for highway driving. The semi autonomous driving is bliss for the long commute, and the cabin noise is eerily quite. I really can't over state how comfortable and quite the ride is, it's worth mentioning twice! The smart system is also really handy with the driver recognition, when I sit in the driver seat, the car will set the seat and side mirrors from my wife's settings to mine, and connect to my phone as well. It can store up to 5 different drivers with their own settings. So much to say really but no one will read this anyway and I could harp on about it all day. Great car!

Andre I’ve owned 10 Subarus here in Australia and also owned other makes but these Subarus are just amazing for all road conditions especially on wet or gravel roads and have always been reliable - I found the service/customer culture to be very good - enjoy

@_dreko Interesting, your comment on highway fuel consumption of 7.0. All my driving on highway and I get about the same in the regular 2.5. Better go test drive an XT.

As someone who loves wagons and off-roaders this is just the perfect middle ground

ZB Calais-V tourer trumps this thing. Heated and cooled seats, driver massage seat, full panoramic sunroof, a proper 9 speed German gearbox not that cvt rubbish and more power 240KW @ 380Nm, VVTI V6.... pity they dont make them anymore... Glad i grabbed one during covid for $40 grand.. no way id spend $55 on this.

@@markc7456 Agree old mate, the Subie has more clearance but thats where it ends.. have you driven a ZB Calais V Tourer ? I've driven the new Outback wasn't fussed and found it too small and that cvt gearbox just isnt right.. The German made ZB is far superior especially the motor and gearbox combo, I'm not fussed on resell value I got mine for $38k in SA delivered to NSW ( 8k on the clock ) with a 5 year warranty they retailed for over 60K so the Holden took the hit as it was first registered to Holden driven by a Holden employee. Just wished they were still around ! 🥲

Thanks alot, Paul. I test drove this car twice. I cross-shopped this with SUVs like the CX-5 Turbo, Forester S and VW Tiguan All-Track Adventure. But the Outback impressed me with it’s quieter cabin on coarse chip sections of motorway, amazing lounge-like comfort in the driver’s seat including the extendable thigh cushion and ventilated seats, really good all-round visibility, cushy ride for our poor city and country roads, and the peace of mind of the full-size spare wheel. Engine power allowed for relaxed acceleration and over-taking. I ordered an Outback Touring XT at the beginning of March. I’ve been told it should be ready to take delivery some time in June. I spoke very recently to another dealer, who said an order placed now would be delivered in July. So there’s a bit of pent up demand there but without Toyota-like crazy lead times. I’m not looking forward to paying a little extra for fuel consumption. But stiff cheese. IMO, there is no other car being sold in Australia with the above features for this money, and available in a reasonable time frame.

Good choice. Chasing Cars did a real world comparison of the turbo and non-turbo's fuel consumption. They found that the turbo uses the same or slightly less fuel (from memory). This is due to the turbo using less engine revs to achieve the same output.

@AUSSIE, I got into this buying process thinking I was most likely going to prefer the CX-5. It seems a better city car being shorter so easier to park in a Westfields etc. I liked the accessible power and “natural” shifting feel of the traditional torque converter transmission. The interior was nice and I liked the physical buttons for the HVAC controls But there were things about the CX-5 that put me off: - Slightly jiggly suspension, certainly compared to the cushy-riding Outback. More jiggly than my Golf GTI. - It was noisier than the Outback on coarse chip at motorway speeds. - With the low-ish windscreen, I preferred to have the driver’s seat set down low. Unfortunately, due to the quite high window sills, this meant visibility of other vehicles on the left side (passenger) of the car was unacceptably compromised. Check this for yourself. - The front seats have a short squab, which puts slightly unpleasant pressure under the middle of my thighs after an hour’s test drive. I’m 6’ tall. - The fan for the ventilated front seats in the Akera model was annoyingly hissy / noisy, even on the lowest setting. This same feature in the Outback Touring XT was noticeably quieter or more muffled. - But I think the worst CX-5 trait I noticed driving 2 different brand new examples over a total of about 2.5hrs driving was the very spongey brake pedal. Way too much travel early in the stroke, doing no where near enough braking until you get deeper into the stroke. The brakes pedal was firmer in all of the other cars I test drove, and certainly very acceptable in the Outback I ended up ordering. After my experience above, I strongly recommend buyers take demo cars for longer test drives over a range of driving conditions (eg. Urban roads with potholes, coarse chip motorways, twisties etc), and even take the same model out for another test drive through a different dealership, to solidify your opinions on these cars. The average person just won’t pick up all these strengths and weaknesses on a 15min demo round the block.

While I remember, I didn’t like the driver’s seat headrest on the CX-5 touching the back of my head. This isn’t a problem on the Outback, which has front headrests on adjustable ratchets; very handy.

Always love these reviews by Car Expert. Thanks for comparing these models you mentioned through a test drive and sharing the results. Regarding the fuel consumption, if you check Chasing Cars review of Turbo vs Non-Turbo Outback, the fuel conumption breakdown shows they are pretty close to same overall.

Drove a Forester for 3 years, just got new 2-23 Outback XT 4 months ago. Everything about the Outback is so much more than the Forester including the punchy turbo which I love. I give my new Outback as many stars that I can.

Had our Touring XT almost 2 weeks. Ordered late Feb, Great drive. Japanese build quality. Does what you need it to do effortlessly. Well thought out electronics and navigation and good high res camera. Front cooled seats great. Large touchscreen. You can turn off some of the annoying features. Also move the options buttons on the screen around. We can fit our camping fridge, 2 x 115l bags, 2 backpacks, and a large food ox in the back without lowering rear seats. Forrester was really great but smaller car, this is really good for touring on both highway, and Aussie dirt roads.

Aaaah I was waiting for this one! Thanks Paul!

Pick up our Sport XT in two days. As a package the turbo Outback just ticks so many boxes. Although fuel economy seems all over the place with various reviews. We got 9.4 on a long test drive in a car with 30kms on it with a bit more acceleration that we'd normally do. Can see it would be easy to get into the mid teens though.

How do you like the new material for the seats in the Sport, is it soft and nice to touch, does it look durable, anything (like stickiness on hot days) that's better or worse than cloth/leather? Thank you very much

Good price for the spec! Turbo boxer, symmetrical AWD and a beefy CVT is honestly the ideal drivetrain for this segment. Oodles of room inside. Subaru should be selling these by the boatload.

Station wagons are quite a niche market. I can’t see Subaru selling boatloads of these unless you somehow know how to turn back time to 1970.

One thing to mention about your performance test. You launched the Outback from 0 to 120, so the CVT doesn't "mimic" gears, but when you are driving normal and you want to overtake from 80, the CVT will mimic gears at that point and the numbers might be different at the end. Awesome review as always Paul!

I am on my 9th in the States, you guys finally got the Turbo. Now you know. Compare that with everything else. I crossed shopped with XC90, Grand Cherokee, MDX, Q7... still got this.

When Subaru ditched the forester xt we bought a Tiguan 162tsi R line, Now the outback has emerged with a turbocharged 2.4 full size spare and 18 inch wheels I think I know what our next car will be thank you for a great review👍🏼

Been a huge fan of the Subaru outback for years a d now that they have uped the power output it's definitely on my shopping list. A d love the blue.

After watching this and considering on a Forester I placed an order on the OB limited 50th anniversary edition XT. Good power, massive boot for the dog and camping gear and the kids love the room outback 😉 plus have the sports exterior with touring stuff inside, best suv I think money can buy at 60k. Had a Mazda CX30 and a Jimny to replace and think this ticks both boxes very well, comfortable to drive and can get off the beaten track a bit without having to drive a huge dual cab. Super happy 😃

I’m all for a raised wagon especially coming from Subaru! I like how the Outback is really planted, slightly wide and of course, fabulous AWD. Here in North America, front fascia/front grille was changed and I don’t like it so much. I prefer the look of what the rest of the world gets better. Only exception is Outback Wilderness trim - that’s got a different front fascia altogether.

Congratulations on finally getting the turbo in Australia. We've had ours here in the US for a bit over 3 years and love it. Just got back from towing a travel trailer across the country and back (for the second time). And while out in the U.S. southwest we got it out for some legit off-roading. We took it to a place called 'White Pocket' (ignoring warnings that you needed 4WD with low range not just AWD!) and also some of the easy-to-moderate off road routes in Moab, UT. Put on a skid plate, some off road tires and air 'em down, and you're good to go for some pretty real off-roading. The 'Wilderness' model, with the extra lift and lower gearing in the rear end would be even better, but we did fine with our 'Onyx XT'.

Can't wait for your review on the new XV.

Hi, you mentioned with the cruise control that it is radar when it works, when actually it has the 4 k camera system working not radar and this is why it detects brake lights also as the speed of the motor bike or vehicle in front of you to adjust speed acordingly.

Best darn'd car reviews on the interweb ! As a farmer, the only comment request I have is that with Subaru especially, but maybe also other SUV's that claim to have off-road capability, it would be nice to hear the ground clearance and importantly their wading depth capability. These are key determinants in what we buy out here. For example my v6 amarok is 2 years old and only has 500mm wading capability. Whilst the new model amarok, which I don't like much, has one saving grace, that being 800mm wading depth. Anyway thank you muchly !

Everything seems good. Fuel use has been determined to be less than the un turbo engine. The dash figures are wrong. My only query is about noise in the cabin from "safety" equipment. Are there noises and can they been turned off?

Thanks for your videos. It would be really helpful if you included a decibel/interior noise level test in your reviews. After coming from a noisy 2006 Mazda 3(sp23) (ones before this were even worse) to a quiet Camry, this is a key buying area for me when buying a car. An interior that is quiet as possible makes long trips more enjoyable (e.g hearing people in rear seat, less draining etc). Thanks

The best value wagon in Australia. So versatile and comfortable across many terrains. Considering most Australians drive 90% of our time on tar the Outback still manage masters luxury offroad when needed. As for the turbo its glorious and provides the power you need to keep you going and get you out if trouble on roads at times. The main negative everyone always brings up is fuel consumption compared to other brands however when filling the tank its such a minor difference. The extra cost is worth it. Still made in Japan and still remains a high quality build.

I've had my now for a month and clocked 4,700kms and its great. Regarding the myth about its fuel economy, On a non-stop drive from Sydney to Coffs Harbour with cruise control set at the speed limit it registered 7.2 l per 100km, and for the last 3,562 km of highway and around Sydney driving it’s come in at 8.0l per 100km, every bit as good as the old 2.5 Forester I upgraded from. I can’t complain about that!

If not going off road and testing ground clearance limits....is the WRX sports wagon ( ts) a better option?

Love the "lifted-wagon" form of this car. I owned a Volvo XC70 for 15 years and it was a true practical work horse. Wondering when a manufacturer will release an EV in this format.

Re: The high fuel consumption. I've have had my Touring XT since mid march, put over 2500km on it and I get constantly 600km+ on a 63L tank. I've driven it pretty conservately through the 1600km 'break in' period and given it a bit of stick outside of that and it's still sitting around the 9.5-10L/100km mark. This is a 'combined' cycle of a 130km highway/B-road round trip commute to work most days and some around town stuff thrown in. I reckon the 'poor fuel consumption' thing that's doing the rounds with motor journos is not reflective of the actual real world results. A big family wagon pulling sub-10's per 100km is a pretty good result, our previous family van with a petrol V6 would chew through 60L within 500km and it had nowhere near the punch that the Outback has.

Re: High fuel consumption, Paul should also have mentioned that it takes 95 RON not 91 RON

I know this is old but can you do the wilderness versions of the Subaru line? Or do they not have them in Australia?

I actually like it a lot more than I thought I would. I'd like a better kerb camera and front parking sensors but that's about it. It would be wonderful for travelling.

Since we now have the turbo motor, i really do hope with get a aussie version of the "wilderness" what the u.s gets, 2inch higher then stock, stronger bash plates etc 👌👌

I love the look and the idea of this car and wanted it to be the ideal upgrade from my VW Golf Alltrack TDI, but I fear the big difference in fuel economy will hold me back, without necessarily compensating enough in other areas. I need to test drive it to be sure; ideally on the highway and on country roads.

In answer to your question re Outback instead of an SUV: absolutely. One issue with the vehicles you listed as competitors is that they sacrificed length in favour of height, and this means that longer loads - even if the nominal load volume was the same - would be impossible to carry. I've owned a naturally-aspirated Outback for nearly 2 years now and am delighted with its all-round capabilities. I don't find it sluggish (I'm sure some will describe the engine as a "joke" as they have in the past) and can overtake at will. Incidentally, I'd be curious to know the overtaking performance of the 2.5 relative to the turbo - not that I'd go out and trade mine in! I'd also be curious as to what the distances covering during the 80-120 burst would be, because I never give thought to time during overtaking, just whether I could complete the maneuver if there's an approaching car in the distance. Another great review Paul, with your customary thoroughness and good cheer: this is great to watch.

Reviewers are accustomed to performance-oriented cars, so they feel every tiny bit of performance drops. 180HP or 99HP/tonne is adequate for cars of this class if tuned well. When reviewers call car "not fun" to drive - it may mean average, not bad. My first car's power to weight ratio was less than 90 HP/tonne and I had no problem overtaking other cars with it. Took 10seconds more, but no big deal.

The Outback has to be the most practical car ever made.

I have a Subaru S-Edition 2.5 turbo that requires 98ron (premium fuel) and a next generation Ford Everest 3.0 diesel V6. They both use around 11L/100km. Currently Diesel is at $1.87 and 98ron at $220.9. The Subaru’s fuel consumption ain’t good. *but sure is fun to drive!

10:00 What is the Phillips screwdriver used for? Anything specific? I was trying to help out a Subaru Ascent stuck in the sand (!!) and there was no standard screwdriver to take off the tow hook cover from the bumper.

It's reversible. Phillips one end, pull the shaft out, flip, reinsert, flat blade the other end.

It can Tow 2.4tonne, if you're in the car by yourself. (150kg can be added to the car only - and that includes the driver and anything else you throw into the boot). Basically, as soon as you add a second person, its overloaded, with no room for any luggage. All owners and to-be owners please be aware.

I really like your reviews, such great detail and a focus on real world practicality. I just don't get the whole 'piano black' when talking about gloss black finishes. When did that become a thing? Lol But seriously, keep up the great work.

In every car unfortunately over the last decade. You’d think manufacturers would have figured it out pretty quick it looks like shit after 2 weeks out of the show room. The most non user friendly surface you could ever created.

Quicker to 100km/h than I thought. Well done Subaru wish we waited for the turbo 😅.

Love my 2017 2.5i but would LOVE to be able to add a turbo pack cuz it’s far from quick and can’t tow even a hard top camper trailer (legally). Anyone know how similar the engines and CVT are???? 😅

I did some tests on my property, goes pretty well. Once you go above 40kmph it kicks you back to "I" mode, bit then when you're under 40kmph it will automatically go back into your selection of dirt or mud mode. Note, even if you're set to "s" prior to x-mode, it will always spit you back into "I" mode. In dirt mode it gives full traction control and really limits wheel slip, uses individual wheel braking to put power to the wheels with traction. In mud mode it deactivates traction control giving you more wheel spin to dig in and power through (quite fun actually). It also programs the throttle to behave more instant like "s" mode, and keeps the revs higher in the sweet spot. Mud mode is lit, I just wish it popped you back into "s" when you got over 40! Both modes give hill decent assistance

Main complaint about Subaru is changing settings above a set speed. It should remain in the chosen mode at all speeds. Also the AWD in Subaru although touted as superior isn’t actually that great and CVTs aren’t ideal off-road.

@@jerrymyahzcat actually in some instances being able to maintain constant rev band is ideal for getting up and over uphill crests. Nothing worse than trying to maintain speed uphill for some grunt-needed parts and the TCauto drops a gear

Have they fixed android auto for android phones. For Applecar play it utilizes the full screen but with android phones, it only allows like 40-50% of the screen to be utilized.

We've been shopping and really like the Subaru outback (premier XT limited) here in Canada. Very comfortable seats, go ride, great cargo space, very flexible which is what we're after. The competition we've come down to is the Genesis GV70 - The fully loaded Subaru with tax comes to about $57K versus the Genesis $60 or $64 K (depending on model). The Genesis is a little more plush and quiet (just minimally though) but comes with 5 year warranty and 5 year maintenance included versus the Subaru 3 year warranty, no maintenance include. Oh and the Genesis uses a bit more gas.

hello Paul , well i bought a outback in 2018 and found it a very good car , would i buy another one ? yes , coming from 6 cylinder cars i dont find it lacking in power always fun to drive , very enjoyable long distance car too. i will look out for the turbo model to check to see how it does perform . cheers Steve/ Geraldton

In the USA I am getting 27 U.S. MPG aka 8.71 Liters per 100 km with a mix of highway and city driving. 1,800 miles aka 2896kilometers sample size This wagon has great passing power and some kick to it for only using lower grade fuel.

You're in the average MPG range. I'm averaging between 25 - 26 MPG with a 50/50 mix of highway and city driving, about 21 - 22 in mostly city, and as high as 30 mpg on all interstate.

Good to see they finally fixed Android Auto, I remember when you originally reviewed the 6th Gen Outback and it would only take up half the screen and just looked like a dog's breakfast.

What about the windshields cracking out of nowhere every 3 months?

Would like to see a "punch it" test where you're cruising at 40-70 kmh, then suddenly punching the throttle up to 100kmh to see how the gearbox responds. Simulates overtaking when you suddenly have the chance and need to drop a few gears.

@carexpert who or what determines a vehicle is SUV ? maybe ground clearance or possibly height ? if its height its taller than tiguan & tucson, = cx5 hmmm so is it a jacked up wagon ? is it a SUV or is it a purosangue ?

Especially for me. Subaru cars have given me excellent job security. -30 year Subaru mechanic.

On my 8th... crossed shopped with XC90, Grand Cherokee, Highlander, MDX, Audi Q7... look up its rear leg room and headroom there are only a handful of cars that can surpass Outback. I mean Ford Expedition, GMC Yukon. Mazda CX5, Toyota Rav4 are in the class of the Forester, not Outback, look up their internal dimensions/interior volume. XT touring has acoustic side glass in North America it's a lexus and 4-runner all in one. Here in Texas, i typically set it at 90mph cruise (limit) and just go to sleep...:)

I bought the 2022 non turbo Outback, same blue colour, can we swap?!! A great country road car, comfortable as, going to have this for awhile. Thanks Paul, we watch you all the time. All the best.

I'd say it depends if you need the extra ground clearance or not. The Outback sits about 5cm higher. If you don't, the Superb Scout is a better car in almost every way. It offers significantly more space, faster, better tech etc

Are those matte black parts plastic or steel?

Subaru was the first Vehicle I drove ( 4 decades ago at age 20) with Adjusting back Lumbar in my parents 1983 Wagon $26K today) was a manual lever but in US cars if they had them it had to be on Top Luxury cars, or High Priced Sports cars. We get screwed in the US. the lowest XT MOdel Starts at $42K Plus and 2 XT trims above the ONYX Trim

Ayt I booked Sport XT in Sydney here and just wondering if anyone using a roof platform and a rooftop tent? I got an Impreza with a rooftop tent and its sitting on 2 Yakima crossbars, but for the Sport XT I am thinking to get a roof platform and then put the rooftop tent on it. Looked at Thule but its expensive and there are others like Yakima and ARB but not many reviews. I calculated the overall height of Car+Platform+Rooftop tent is under 2.2m. Dont know how much height I will get with Yakima or ARB roof platforms

Sorry but beefed up or not I would run a mile from anything using a CVT transmission. So many reviewers I trust warn against CVT due to past history. From driving experience to reliability and repair costs even under warranty where there are long delays in replacing a faulty transmission unit I regularly read. Sorry but that’s a deal breaker for me. Put a conventional automatic in it like Mazda, you have one and you have a good product.

Thanks as always for the great review. If Subaru was able to produce a hybrid as good as Toyota, they would have a Toyota Camry real competitor.. As the Toyota Camry Hybrid can't really tow, and has about a 30 kg download weight. Subaru make a good value car, for example the Mazda CX 80 and what they're going to sell those for, it's ridiculous when you compare it against a Subaru outback. But, those fuel usage numbers will stop a lot of buyers from looking at this car, including ourselves. My understanding Subaru plan to implement a hybrid in about 2024(happy to be corrected), and I was reading that maybe Toyota's hybrid will be utilised (Toyota is Subaru's largest shareholder, and Subaru currently obtain materials from Toyota's supplier network),

Probably should check a bit of off-road performance on a car like this. I know a lot of people in the country have Subarus.

I’ve taken my XTT semi-off-road (my third drive of the car lol) and she did it beautifully!

I watched just for the 0-100. Low sevens is perfect for a big light off roader. People have been worried but that’s a great amount of power especially given the CVT doesn’t like getting off the line.

Spot on, it's exactly the kind of pace that you need in a car of that size. My Acadia does similar but I'm sure it drinks more petrol doing it 😂

Subaru has really been in the shadows, but maybe this model may make the competition with rivals like the Mazda CX-5 more attractive to buyers looking for a flexible option.

About to receive our new 2023 outback xt touring, we are trading in our 2019 vw Tiguan R line all space why you might ask it’s because the Tiguan while being a great suv the seats are a little bit narrow compared to the comfort of the xt also the 20 inch rims give a bit of a harsh ride and the big seller is my wife has better visibility out of the Subaru compared to the Tiguan which will be a big difference for the gutter rash fingers crossed 😊

You do know that too much torque from a lane keeping cruise control can be unsafe? I’m unsure why your lane test has any real indications for daily use or performance?

i have a toyota prado a nissan xtrail and the outback xt in the driveway . i love the outback this thing is so nice and its a bit of a sleeper. the power is amazing. its the wifes car but i take when i can. the prado is nice but it a 4wd. the nissan i cant stand driving it the outback is a fun drive and comfortable drive. esp on a trip

I love my ZB Calais-V tourer, does all that and more.....For the love of god I'm waiting on proper remote start on the keyring(my 2014 VF Ute has this) why dont they do that ? RIP Holden.

I will take this over a Ford Focus estate active or any soft top '4x4' like the Nissan Qashqai for example. This one can go on basic off-road and most importantly has a very large boot

Seriously Paul, it competes with likes of Rav4, CX5, CRV?? Where does that put the Forester then? Isn't the Outback much larger than the aforementioned 4 and those 4 fall into the catagoryof mid sized suv? Specsavers mate.

I’m trying to decide whether to get a base model Isuzu MUX or an Outback XT or 2.5?? I never really do much off-roading, I just want to be able to have my surfboards in the back and be comfortable taking it on the odd dirt track to a camp spot or the beach down or up the coast. I really want reliability though as it will be our next 6-8yr car at least. I do favour a smooth pleasant drive. Not sure if I need the ruggedness of the MUX, however fuel consumption will be a big priority as I will be driving to work every day (around 40-50kms each day) Cheers to anyone who can help me make up my crazy mind right now 😅

I absolutely love everything about this vehicle!! I just wish I could afford it 😢

The older outback models you can pick up cheap and they are really great cars. The interior on most of them is still great quality. I have 2007 Outback that I have absolutely thrashed and it still runs (nearly 300,000 ks on it). Only looking at upgrading now which is why I'm watching the videos
