How my Subway career came to an end. Nirvana was in town and I really wanted to go but had to work that night. A customer came in before the show and accidently dropped two tickets on the floor of which I found and put behind the counter waiting for that person to come back and claim them. A couple hours go by and nobody did SO I just locked the building up and went to the concert. I'm glad I did because Cobain was dead about 8 months later and would never be a Subway customer ever again.

Exactly what I was thinking too. Even when I worked these jobs in the 90s (Subway strangely snubbed my application-- still offended) I remember thinking, what about the structure of these jobs makes these companies think these guys doing the bottom jobs have any reason to care if people come back? There were no bonuses, commissions, not even really any real promotion potential for these positions. They didn't give people (and still do not) making food at the direct point of sale any motivation at all to care if the company sank or swim or if nobody came into the store, yet seemed to think they just should care.

I feel so many emotions watching this!!! Subway was my first real job in 1992, and my training video was nearly identical. I worked in Hawaii, and the tourists could be so damn rude. I was required to wash my hands between EVERY customer! Wish fast-food employees would still be as professional today. I certainly had to kiss customer ass, upsell, make small talk, etc. I miss the top cut on the sub, but I can see why they no longer do it-me and my coworkers CONSTANTLY cut our fingers because of the way you have to do it, like all bloody hell cuts. I couldn't eat bologna for 10 years because the Cold-Cut-Combo was our best selling sub-hundreds per day I would make! Hated the dumb club card, pain in the ass, waste of time. If you think people in the video looked super dorky, in the time period we also thought they were super dorky. To sum it up: never thought I'd be watching a Subway training video 29 years later, at 12 am, on a little thing called a cell phone lol😱🤯

I miss the old 80s and 90s decor at Subway!! SO nostalgic. I used to love going there as a kid throughout the 90s & getting my little treat: a cold cut combo on wheat or a meatball on italian bread, six inch always with the american cheese. The smell of the bread baking when coming through the doors was downright delightful. People can talk all they want about the sandwiches now but I still really like 'em & think they're nicely made. My favorites now are the steak & cheese & spicy italian!

If you ran the ideal business, then 100% of your customers don't come back because they die, since that's the only thing nobody can control (especially a nationwide chain where people can't move away). What it's showing is 82% of customers leave cause they get pissed off at something, and 14% leave because another store did a better job.

This makes me proud to be a Subway employee even though I've never been one.

Reasons for not patronizing… dead. That’s gold right there!
I miss the inside wallpaper and it always had that amazing Subway smell. Now, the three in my area are inside gas stations and just looks like your typical place to get food.
Why do we wash our hands? Because it looks good to the costumer. Oh yeah almost forgot and it’s clean

I remember getting the kids’ meal back in the day with the round bun and the off-off brand toy. My mom never wanted to eat there though because she hated the fact that they didn’t wear gloves back in the day.
Funny, sure, but also impressive. It's mind-blowing in what detail these franchises optimized the customer experience already 30 years ago.
1% of customers don't come back because they die? There's really no way to prevent that, unless they're dying because of your food, and if that is the case, customer service shouldn't be your top priority.

If you ran the ideal business, then 100% of your customers don't come back because they die, since that's the only thing nobody can control (especially a nationwide chain where people can't move away). What it's showing is 82% of customers leave cause they get pissed off at something, and 14% leave because another store did a better job.

that's the typical Millennial attitude and why you guys get nowhere in life. if you're good at your job and you provide good customer service you're going to get paid more. nobody owes you a living and if you don't know how to behave like a decent human being and provide good customer service don't take a customer service job. why so many businesses fail in America people have the same attitude you do and they get complacent. they forget the customers are actually the ones giving them the paycheck.
