Customers First - 80's Jewel Training Video
Ойын-сауық
80's training video for Jewel grocery stores. Filmed in the Chicago suburb of Elmhurst, 1988.
Backstory: I worked at Jewel during college and one my jobs was training new employees. That meant watching corporate training videos. The videos were not good, with one exception: Customers First! Now here was a true gem. The jingle, the graphics, and all these hilarious examples of terrible customer service. I would make trainees watch it multiple times. Anyways, on my last day or work, I snatched the video and now I share it with you!

I never go into Starbucks because it's completely obvious, at least her in the UK, that the servers are encouraged to always display their 'personality' which means what should be a quick and simple transaction ends up like having to sit through someone's irritatingly happy intro to their latest KZread video, one server kept having a conversation with me while they were behind the counter and I was sat at a table, ruined my coffee drinking experience and I've never been back

All of that is true. Most of them have retired by now (within the last 10-15 years). Jewel was a smaller order/convenience store for us (90s-late 2000s). Cub Foods was our go to for big orders. The cashier with zero chill isn’t the hero we all want, but is definitely the hero we need.
I used to be a cashier and had to do the express lane. Customer buys a month's worth of groceries, you politely remind them that it's the express lane. They bitch you out and demand to speak with a manager because, you know, "THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT!" Manager comes over and bitches you out for not immediately ringing up all of their stuff. You finally finish and then the next customer bitches you out for having to wait so long because they're in a rush. You apologize and then that manager comes back over and bitches you out again. Fun times.

Yknow, some customers can be assholes but it's important to remember the good ones. Just the other day I helped a lady out to her car, she gave me a hug and said she hopes santa Claus is 'real good to me this year'. Such a sweet lady. There was the guy buying mild pepper rings and when my hungry ass started talking about how I liked them he dead seriously said 'well, get you one'. I declined but it was nice of him. And also all the nice people who say cool things about my daith piercing, complimenting it and saying it's pretty. Yeah, people can be assholes. But they can also be very sweet.
As a former supermarket employee myself (I worked at Zallie's ShopRite of West Berlin, NJ), I find those new hire training videos to be the best part of the orientation process. I can still remember the Wakefern videos had to watch on my first day, and that was back in 1997!
Lmao I relate to these people. I love the "harsh" side they show to customers. As previously being in a grocer cashiering job for 3 miserable years. This is so true! I hated the ones especially that had WIC cards and f**ked up the systems with items not specified that the card covered.
