The E is for Eta. Eta translates to efficiency. The 325E was made to meet fuel efficiency standards as a company for BMW. The car was sold primarily in the US because of limits on engine size in Europe.

I got my brand new 325e when I was a teenager in 1986… so know exactly what you mean about “feeling” and “emotions” - which is why I still have it and drive it today. I love how you talk about how the car makes you feel! Don’t know your age, but I don’t think you were born yet - which is why I love this video even more. So much respect for you for appreciating those simpler times. Indeed they were simpler (and dare I say, more “feel good”) times.

The 325e was slow but for 1987, it was pretty fast. It redlined at 4500 rpm but you could still get up to 50 mph in second gear. This particular one had fewer options. You could get a power sunroof and nicer seats, almost as comfortable as a modern day 3 series. You could also get a 3 spoke steering wheel with the horn in the middle

Picked up a Canadian 87 325e 5spd, it has a Dinnan chip and redline is raised to 6000, it kind of chokes out after 5 but pulling redline sets the next gear in a better position. Great car! It will pull out of a light and gap some cars. Get a lot of smiles from people. Would recommend getting one. Check the trunk for water & the floor panels. Your dash is in perfect shape also!

Since you always do your research... The eta was not a “detuned” six. It has a larger bore, higher displacement, different head designed for the American market. More torque. It also was NOT an economy bmw. Eta was engineering speak for efficiency. And FYI in the 80s you could still get Valium if you didn’t want to feel anything.

Great review. I had a 1984 325e I bought second hand in 1998 when it was 14 years old and it had 171,000 miles on it. It was the same color as the one in your video, was a one owner car and the guy babied it. It looked like new. It was an amazing find. I drove it until it had 250,000 miles and owned it until 2008. It was fantastic. When I sold it it still had the original engine and clutch. I wish I never sold that car. My interior had the nicer sport seats than your tester had. I found the backseat was actually surprisingly roomy for a small car. By the way, in the 80's we weren't connected through social media but nobody felt disconnected.
