1983 Wk 16 Dolphins Beat Jets 34-14; Edit with Radio Call

Спорт

The Miami Dolphins run away from the New York Jets 34-14 on a Friday Night in Miami. Dolphins DB Mike Kozlowski returns two Richard Todd passes for TDs in the fourth quarter to blow the game open. Don Strock starts for an injured Dan Marino. Mark Duper also becomes the first Dolphins wide receiver to reach the 1,000 yard mark in a season. Radio call by Rick Weaver, Hank Goldberg and Henry Barrow. TV footage by ABC. Please excuse some audio issues - the source material was a bit rough. AM radio at night back in the early 80s just wasn't without interference...

I was seven-years-old and was at this game with my dad and my older brother. I remember clearly Mike Kozlowski's two pick 6s.

I took a flight from Atlanta to San Diego back in '09 with a friend of mine. So, on our side our seats were 3 wide (2 wide on the other side) and I had the window seat. It was just my friend and I initially, but we knew there would be a 3rd person and sure enough, we see an older gentleman with a very young kid and naturally we were thinking "I hope he's not sitting in our row with that toddler". Well, he says "hey guys, I have the middle seat." He then asked me if he could take the window seat. I gave him the window seat, but was pretty pissed about it, because it's a 5 hour flight and not only did I give up the window seat, I also had to sit right next to this guy and his toddler buddy. He asked my friend and I where we were from, to which my friend replied "Buffalo, NY" and I followed with "Southeast of Buffalo." He said "You guys must be Bills fans." My friend said "actually I'm a Giants fan" and I said "I'm a Dolphins fan." He said "I played 8 years for the Dolphins." I was like "WHAT?!". He then introduced himself as Mike Kozlowski, which being a young fan on Miami in the 80's, I've heard of him. I couldn't believe it! I said "You've gotta tell me some stories!". Anyway, he told me about the time Don Shula got really pissed at him for messing up on a play where the Jets scored a touchdown, but then right after, he had 2 back-to-back interceptions for touchdowns (in 8 seconds, I believe). I was in awe. Here I am, a Dolphins fan from upstate NY, who's never had the opportunity to meet a Dolphins player, and now I get to chat with one on a 5 hour flight. It was amazing. It turned out that he was on his way to San Diego to attend a funeral and the toddler was his grandson who he was taking care of while his daughter was out of town. One of the coolest experiences of my life. I got my picture with him when we landed in San Diego. So, for whatever reason, I thought about that flight today and wanted to see if there was video of his interceptions and here it is. Thank you for uploading this. And Mike Kozlowski, in the longshot you happen to stumble across this comment, thanks for the memory; it's one I'll never forget.

Great story! Thanks for posting - Kos was always a fun player to root for on the Dolphins and one of my favorites! Thanks again.

@@jrdurr2 It was my pleasure. I've always wanted to share that story with other Dolphins fans, but, unfortunately, there isn't very many here in upstate New York. And I thank you for uploading this video. It was so cool to see the series of plays he told me about!

Funny enough Mike is my linebackers coach at my high school. I will make sure to tell him. I was doing some research on him because he told me he played in the nfl and stumbled across this video.

The Mike Charles play was amusing just from the standpoint that the Jets got mad about his sack celebration. It made them angry when he did it yet Gastineau rubbing it in with his sack dance was OK. Couldn't take it when it was done back to them.

Obviously he didn't take a swing at Charles, just hurled the ball at him 14:44 (his 18th incomplete pass that night). But I guess it was hard to make out from the booth.

Kerlem Yeah Rick Weaver was way off on that one. Watching that game back in 1983 I knew right away Todd threw it at Charles. Surprised Rick didn't see it on the replays upstairs in the booth or one of the radio spotters didn't tell him.

I see former OU Sooner David Overstreet at 6:38 and I really believe he was the Super Bowl running back Miami needed but died in a bizarre car accident after the 83-84 season. Uwe Von Schamann was also a classmate of Overstreet.

Rare Friday Night Football game and it was the last game of the season and was Howard Cosell's final game in the booth. This was the week after the Jets fans tore up Shea Stadium after their last game before moving to Jersey the following season.

12-16-1983, Jets-Dolphins on ABC (Howard Cosell's last ABC NFL game) vs. Dallas and Falcon Crest on CBS and Oh God! Book II on NBC.

Marie Pavlov Yep this was historic with this being Howard Cosell's last game in the booth for ABC. Also, it did have to go against the Friday night soap tandem of Dallas and Falcon Crest on CBS which came in first but MNF came in second place over NBC's Oh God! Book II network television premiere.
