The CRAZIEST CHEATING in Monday Night Football HISTORY | Bengals @ Dolphins (1983)

Спорт

In week 13 of the 1983 NFL season on Monday Night Football between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Miami Dolphins, the Dolphins won handily, taking it by a final score of 38-14. However, part of the reason why they won the game by such a convincing scoreline was because the Bengals literally could not see anything upstairs in the booth, preventing them from calling plays. And the reason for that had everything to do with the Dolphins. This is the story behind the bizarre drama

Very funny! 1) If the roles were reversed, and I was rooting for the Dolphins, I'd think something was fishy. 2) After the 1st Quarter, the Dolphins outscored the Bengals 24-14. 3) The Bengals could have turned off the air conditioning. 4) The Bengals could have wiped the windows of the booth. 5) In 1981 the Bengals' season ended at the hands of an upstart quarterback named Joe Montana, who made the Hall of Fame. 6) In 1983 the Bengals' season ended at the hands of an upstart quarterback named Dan Marino, who made the Hall of Fame.

I don't have enough info to say if someone at the OB (owned and run by Miami's government) cranked the A/C in the Bengals' booth way up on purpose, but something strange was going on there.

Sounds like a window seal failure honestly, happens all the time. An air-conditioned room should not fog the windows when it's hot and humid outside. But I HAVE seen foggy condensed windows with failed seals though, having also been the son of a professional window tinter for 20 years.

Yeah, blame the loss on foggy windows, not on the fact that in 1983 the Dolphins had the number one rated defense in the league, and the Defensive Player of the Year in Doug Betters. SMH!! The Dolphins were the defending AFC champs, and would finish the '83 season tied with the 2nd best record in the NFL, and tied with the best record in the AFC at 12-4. Their defense was the legendary "Killer Bees" that had willed the Dolphins to the Super Bowl the previous year, despite having an inept offense, and no clear starter at QB.... But yeah, Cincinnati lost because of the condensation on their windows.

I don't think there's much excuse for an OC to be that dependent on viewing from the booth. Not every OC did and does, so it obviously can be done, so it's not a significant disadvantage to calling from the field as it's more a matter of preference.

  • @darkhobo

Eh. Ita much easier to see what a defense is doing post-snap from the booth than the field. Much harder to count the box. You cant see if that corner is getting iside or outside leverage or whatever. Etc. All those little intricacies that make a huge effect on every play. Just saying, calling plays from the sideline IS much harder. It isnt madden. You cant just call slants and 4 verts all day. Ya know?

I think what you're missing here is he was not an NFL OC he was a Wide Receivers coach they shoved into the OC job. A Wide Receivers coach mind you that had only been a coach for 3 years at that point and one of those years was as a tight end coach. So major disadvantage probably not for a guy that had been doing it for a while but for a guy that had just been coaching position the year before and just thrown in and still trying to learn the job it can definitely throw a proverbial wrench in the machine. This was not the NFL of today either where you could do that and get away with it this was definitely still the let them season up NFL in his day. So it's unlikely he was planning on being and OC that soon in his career as a coach as well. That being said I tip my hat to him for not blaming it on the fog that would have been the easy way out.

This week in the NFL we had two improbable events that render two memes kinda moot 1. Butt punt 2. App State one upping the Falcons in the choke job stakes. Atlanta lost in the Supebowl, but it was the same league. App State somehow choked away a 28-3 lead to James Madison, and...pretty much stole the meme. App State is now known for 2007 upsetting Michigan, and, now somehow outFalconing the Falcons. Well done, Mountineers...well done. Only way to outdo that is to have the CFB playoff choke job or a worse Superbowl choke job...

The only way I feel that the Butt Punt would supersede the Butt Fumble is if the Dolphins lost the game, which sadly didn't happen. Memes like that are most remembered when the team that committed said mistake went on to lose because of it. The Jets S-U-C-K-E-D, S-U-C-K-E-D, S-U-C-K-E-D when the Butt Fumble happened and the Patriots destroyed them, which is why we remember it with laughter.

Sadly, I'm willing to bet that someone from the team went up to the booths earlier to help prevent that. Also, as nice as being able to see is... you should be able to do the job from the sidelines as well... and lastly... they were down 14-0 when he got up there.. So if we remove the score at that point.. Cincy still would have lost 24-14... That was the year Marino led the team to a super bowl loss if I remember correctly.. and Coslet is not known as a very skilled coach at this point.. he may have had a good run with Cincy here.. but he could not hack it much outside the booth..

No that was the next year, '84 Marino's 2nd year, when he led them to the Super Bowl. In '83 the Fins were still a defensive dominated team with the "Killer Bees" that led the NFL in team defense, and Doug Betters was Defensive Player of the Year. In '83 the Dolphins were the Defending AFC champs and tied with the Raiders for the best Record in the AFC at 10-4. Unfortunately, they lost 27-20 to the Seahawks in the divisional round of the playoffs in a sloppy game where Mario threw 2 picks, and the team lost 3 fumbles.

@@robertcabrera6232 Not that it matters (cause it don't).. personally, I don't care one whit.. the math is easy though... they got bombed in the 1 quarter with fog... and beaten in the 3 with it lifted... cheating? No.. it still happens when possible.. teams have always done little shit like this to other teams... headsets not working (league has since put rules in place for that one.. if one teams don't.. neither can use them) etc) and them being a year later... So what.. they lost.. they are the Dolphins... I've hated them since I started watching football (same division as the Bills... you gotta hate them).. so them going to a SB.. was bad to start with.

Oh it’s cheating. The Dolphins Cheated the Jets In January of 1983 where there was no tarp on the field even though it rained hard on Saturday. The Jets were a team built on speed both on offense and defense. The muddy field benefited the Dolphins. This was said before the game started. I also am not positive but I think the home team is supposed to by rule, put a tarp on the field during heavy rains prior to gameday.

I've never seen anybody accuse the Chargers of cheating when they literally had the visitors locker room lights turned out at halftime of a playoff game VS the Dolphins, with no other part of their stadium affected. Then there's the Snow Plow Game, in which an inmate was allowed by the officials to drive a plow onto the field to clear the snow away so the Pats could kick the winning FG. Somehow when teams cheat *against* the Dolphins, everybody just thinks it's funny and perfectly fine.

@@DolFan316 we handed the Pats their ass later during the playoffs. I think the fans and most of the drinks mysteriously disappeared from the Chargers sideline during OT of the Epic in Miami game,so I'm thinking the lights out thing was pay back in the eyes of the Chargers. I'm just saying stuff like this probably happens more than most people realize. Funny how Miami is in the middle of the most memorable ones.

No. Bengals self-destructed. Look at the pattern. After every great game, a really bad one. Miami was a must-win for a team who couldn’t find a way to be consistent. Bad play calling doesn’t make you inept at execution or throw INTs. Collet may not have been able to see, but Ken Anderson wasn’t blind, he was just throwing like he was.
