1982 Yamaha XJ650 Maxim gets new fuse box and it's first drive in 5 years Kevn on 4 Wheels

I got the bike to the point where I can safely drive it. The wiring is all in order and tires were inflated. It is amazingly smooth and powerful. Fuse box on eBay: www.ebay.com/itm/Yamaha-XJ-65...

Had both 650&750 Maxims, great bikes. Did have fuse box issues on both, we used inline fuses and that also worked very well.

Awesome!
Thats why you have the hole in the muffler. Because the center stand keeps hitting it. However, it does sound pretty decent, and you got it running fairly well.

Good to know! Thanks for the compliment!
I really enjoyed these videos. I always wanted one of these. A friend had one in the mid 90s. You are way braver than me on some dry rotted tires.

Nice bike ! FYI if fuel valve is like a 1981 model you run it in on position then RES is reserve. Never run it in PRI ! It is to prime low or empty carburetors. The other positions run on vacuum but PRI runs it straight in ! Love my XJ650 Maxim. Have a Blessed Day

Thank you! Thanks for the info on the petcock. Glad I didn’t flood my bike!
Love your videos especially a rookie like me but I would use a heat gun or hairdryer for your shrink-wrap not a naked flame ,

That’s a good point. They do look much nicer w a heat gun.
A Mapp gas torch for heat shrink? seems a bit excessive to me. I use a cigarette lighter. Something odd about that tank. On the brand new 1982 Yamaha XJ650 Maxim I had way back when, the Yamaha emblems were attached to the tank with screws. That tank looks perfectly smooth on the sides.

I later moved to a nice butane cigar torch.
Replaced my fuses with blades.

That's a good plan. A 2021 solution to a 1980s bike
I had a valve cover gasket melt on me gong down the road, got smokie. found out 3 of the cover bolts were striped, some stranded copper wire fits in before the helicoil. might have been the loose bolts and not the valve cover, but i have to drain the kerosene out of the gas tank.

0-60 time?
Hey I just bought this bike and am having issues with the wiring, does it matter which wires I connect together? (I do know that white stripe goes to white stripe etc) but I have 2 of each color wires on the fuse box and the motorcycle

The bike is in a few pieces now! Last June my free time came to a screeching halt but in a few months I’ll be back in it! I have big plans
What size but connectors did you use? Thanks

HandNrocK hello! I think that’s a safe estimate. They are solid bikes and hold their value. With the current market I think $1,500 USD is realistic
Where did you buy the fuse box from

You think the number one carb was making the swelling/Chirping noise ?

It was! When I pressed on the intake tube it would stop. I saw clear cracks in there
Where did you buy the new fuse box from? I got the same year and bike. It’s hard to find those original fuses so I’m looking to upgrade.

I have only gone maybe 60 mph locally. Never been on the interstate yet. I’m sure it be smooth as glass at 90!
Just picked up an 83, but can't find that style of fuse box. Where did you get it?

Are you supposed to run it on pri?
@kevinon4wheels

I don't think it is recommended to run on "prime" but with the carb rebuild it doesn't leak or flood. I did hook the vacuum line back to the carb since then

Kevin U I have the same bike. I’ve bought a battery solenoid and spark plugs and still can’t get it to idle without starting fluid. I think I need my carbs cleaned. Any suggestions that helped you?
@kevinon4wheels
4 жыл бұрын
@@warmaster2.079 Hello. Sounds like you're onto it. I would guess the idle jet is clogged in one or more of the carbs. Easy trick is drain all the float bowls. If that doesn't help, taking the rack off and cleaning the jets are probably your best bet.

Thanks so much for these videos, I just bought the same bike that has been sitting for about 12 years and needs a lot of the same work. I also ordered that same fuse box so thank you for making a video on that!
