Never drove one but I do remember seeing them. Seen my brother taken away after a mini bike accident. In 73? Been a Emt /paramedic since 1989 so I’ve driven my share of antique EAs 😂

This looks like one of the last car based ambulances before the switch over to vans and truck based ambulances. I'm amazed at the headroom inside. It's as much as a van based ambulance would have. Also has a nice pass-thru from the cab area. Probably the most stripped down cadillac I've ever seen with rubber floor mats and an AM radio.

I think hearse, and ambulance Cadillacs were called commercial chassis. They were special builds with heavier frames, longer wheelbase, and leaf springs in the rear.

Not just a "meat wagon" this thing! It actually has a lot of life sustaining equipment. Though I'm no paramedic. Looks fully stocked to me, for the time period.

@@aussiefurbymogwaifan6621 I grew up with these Cadillac ambulances in Ohio (U.S.). They gave a very smooth ride for the sick and injured patient and that is why Cadillac was the chassis/vehicle of choice in the 1960's and early-70's. I loved them. The problem was that in the mid-1970's with the advent of Advanced Life Support (medics/paramedics), there became a situation where there was so much specialized equipment in the patient compartment that there wasn't much room to move around, let alone for the patient. The patient compartment was cramped. Government regulation dictated a change and the fire department life squads moved to box-type modular ambulances that had much more room for the patient to be treated by the fire department medics. Sorry so lengthy!

@@literalantifaterrorist4673 " faster and significantly safer " , not on your life . With a higher center of gravity, greater curb weight , and smaller engine , I'll take my chances in the Cadillac , thank you very much . Also remember , that back when this Cadillac was built , the idea was to stabilize the patient , not to prep them for the O.R.

Back then Cadillac built what was known as a Commercial Chassis for use as limousines, ambulances or hearses . They were way heavier duty than a standard automobile of the time . There were a few cars built using the Buick , Olds , Pontiac , or Chevrolet vehicles as a basis , however the companies that did the conversion work were all set up for using Cadillac donor cars . The other cars wouldn't have been any cheaper in the long run , due to the extra work involved to convert one .
