    An awesome machine for its day. Our 1977 Dodge Medi-Cruiser, the more modern equipment of the era, and brand new then, threw a fan belt on a very hot day as we approached Sterling IL on the way to Chicago from Davenport Iowa, in the day before Helicopters were common for medical transport. We borrowed a '73 Lifeliner High top from the dealer that we bought all our equipment from in Sterling IL, by shear good fortune, and switched or patient to it and took it to Chicago. It was my only chance to ever drive one on a real run since they were being phased out. It had a Federal Q motor-driven siren with a brake on it to stop it if you needed to shut it off. And lots of power under the hood, like a 500 cu in motor. At around 100 miles per hour the the wind blows thru the siren backwards and you can hear it starting to make noise when you're not using it. A snapshot in time of a day in the life of an old EMT .

    And behold, the car that it would have been appropriate to cast as the new Ecto 1 in the 2016 Ghostbusters remake.. a late model Cadillac Miller Meteor ambulance... not a hearse... Very nice car, btw :)

    @aussiefurbymogwaifan6621

    But the OG ecto-1 could also be used as a hearse, it was called a combination car ...I think🤔

  • @pfarabee

    @pfarabee

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@aussiefurbymogwaifan6621 Correct... but the hearse used in the 2016 version cannot be used as an ambulance... it is exclusively a hearse. The main visual differences come in the windows surrounding the back and the obvious lights/sirens. In the ambulance/hearse version, curtains were used to enclose the casket area in hearse mode. In the ambulance mode, the lights and sirens are obvious. They could also be used in hearse role to broadcast funeral music, etc. Those windows and lights/sirens make a huge difference to both the functionality of the vehicle (driving fast and taking turns with the exceptionally limited visibility of a hearse vs the open window back of the combo car.) as well as the aesthetic. The glass in the back makes a much more attractive-looking vehicle altogether, and the lights/sirens make it obvious that it is an emergency response vehicle. The functionality difference between the two is also significant. The ambulance mod came with internal circuits, wiring, switches, etc for things like lights and sirens, internal machinery hooked into power outlets, etc. The hearse is well... a hearse. There is a deleted scene from the original 80s version that I have been unable to relocate. (The hearse reveal scene in the 2016 version seems to actually be an attempted homage to this deleted scene) The rough synopsis is: Peter is outside of the fire station waiting, he gawks at something and we see Ray drive up in the Ecto 1 (before it is restored, completely rusted out, ugly as sin)... Peter is like "Uh... WHAT IS THIS?" Ray responds about it being their new vehicle.. about it needing some love and probably some repaired wiring but he got a great deal on it and it should be perfect... Peter says "A Hearse, Ray!? A HEARSE?!?" and walks inside, disgusted. Ray is confused as Peter walks away, and says "But, It's a Cadillac professional line!" In the 2016 version, Patty just says "It's a Cadillac!" Because the creators of the 2016 version didn't apparently understand the actual punchline of that scene... the actual joke ISN'T that Ray is confused because "It's a Cadillac".. that is only the SURFACE of the joke. The true joke in that scene is that Peter's objections are actually unfounded, because it isn't actually a hearse.. it is a Cadillac professional line ambulance... and as such it is already equipped as an emergency vehicle.. complete with wiring for sirens, lights, etc... it is literally the PERFECT vehicle for their purposes. Unlike say, a hearse, which would be not only less-than-perfect functionally, needing lots of extra wiring and circuits to support the sirens, lights, and machinery, but also, in line with Peter's objection, a bit morbidly on-the-nose for a ghost-hunting company.

    @@pfarabee I hope I have gotten this right, so the joke is that he thinks it's a hearse, when it's really an ambulance?? Interestingly I saw this comment on a video that people didn't actually think much of the Ecto-1 when it first appeared on screen and that people didn't really appreciate the "character" until they released a special anniversary edition many years later, which obviously would be because it doesn't really get alot of screen time. IMO I also think that audiences, I’d hate to say this but, they had probably grown tired of seeing Caddys in film as well as being used in music videos, mentioned in song lyrics (Caddys are still mentioned in song lyrics today) and of course used by Elvis Presley and Little Richard. I also saw a comment about how someone said that Lamborghini's are overrated and used to fluent a celebrity's wealth and I was like to myself "well Cadillacs are also mostly used to fluent wealth as well too", which is why I wouldn't be surprised if people back in 84, when GB was first released thought the same about Cadillac, in the same way that people think about Lamborghini today... All these people who complain about them being turned into Ectos and whatever, at least it's better than it being left to rust and this one people tend to forget - better than being used to fluent ones "wealth".... Also I think that's why all the equipment is put on the roof rack and not on the car itself, like in one of the early designs (and the DeLorean), crazy that I like the 59 tailfins more so than probably Ecto's siren... I think that professional Caddys (especially the ones that were used as ambulances and in the fire brigade!) probably deserve more recognition than the Cadillacs that are used to fluent wealth! But that's just my opinion🤷🏼‍♀️ I also wonder why Cadillac was chosen in the first place, when movie cars are usually little known car brands, would of taken them a fair bit if time to find a model that wasn't already famous...

  • @pfarabee

    @pfarabee

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@aussiefurbymogwaifan6621 Not sure why they chose that specific model. There were other brands that would have worked for that "gag" too. I imagine they just liked the look of the Miller, or maybe they liked the name Miller Meteor, or maybe one of them was a car enthusiast, or maybe they got a good deal on them. (multiple cars were made, I think) But yeah, that was the entire point of that deleted scene. Peter was furious that Ray chose a hearse, because of the whole idea of driving around to collect spirits of dead people in a hearse was just too much, even for a joker like him... but Ray was confused at his objection because it wasn't a "hearse", it was an ambulance that could double as a hearse.. but at its core was an emergency vehicle that would be the perfect response vehicle to rush to face ghost infestations in with sirens blazing. In essence, Peter correctly realized a hearse would be completely inappropriate, but Ray also correctly realized an ambulance was perfect, lol... basically a joke based around the dual nature of the vehicle itself... those guys could really write subtle stuff, lol. But yeah, in the 2016 version, the one lady is like "It's a hearse" and Patty just responds "It's a Cadillac!".. and the joke falls flat, because it being a Cadillac doesn't actually excuse it being a hearse... if it were also an ambulance, then that would excuse it being a hearse, and make it perfect as an emergency response vehicle. Personally, I think if they weren't going to get a Miller or equivalent, they should have just gotten like a massive HUMMER or something... and the joke could be that they keep having to stop to get gas while trying to get to places in a hurry... or, they could have used Melissa, who is great at physical comedy, to like constantly struggle to get into the stupid thing because she's so short and chubby.

IDK but it just makes me think of how you could get Mercedes Benz perfume once... One of my IRL friends has "Miller" for a surname, but his a Holden guy, although both are under General Motors

    This was essentially a hearse with a siren because back then, EMS medicine was still stone-age. Medics would load you up and put an oxygen mask at best. There was no advanced life support capability. Cities lacked emergency room hospitals and level 1 trauma centers did not exist yet, that means transport was so long, many cardiac patients were dead by time they reached emergency rooms.

    If they didn't overheat on the way, or lose a muffler over a bump that exceeded it's 5" of ground clearance at best. I only drove a cadillac for six months when I was fist and EMT and the siren stopped working 1/3 of the way to the hospital and I had to sit on the horn for 8 miles with a full arrest. OYYYY those days were a blast anyway, the only job I ever had that I loved going to work every day. It was exciting and I felt that I made an actual difference in some peoples lives. Isn't it funny how we reminisce about this job decades later.

    Obviously you did not serve at this time. In California in the early 70's they had trauma centers and paramedics. These were transport units, well maintained, well built, and staffed by First Aiders who were trained to administer first aid on scene and get patients to the hospitals quickly. In New Jersey, our Hospital was 3-5 minutes away. I had 2 saves in that era.

It’s also high top to fit people in the back because it’s an ambulance, whereas the Ecto-1 I believe is more of the Hearse design like those cars they put coffins in the back of to drive the body to a funeral.
