I'm Dr. Frita, a board-certified nephrologist in Atlanta, GA, and I've seen firsthand how the right dietary choices can make a world of difference for my patients.
We often don't realize that what we eat plays a significant role in managing high blood pressure. Tens of millions of Americans suffer from this condition, largely due to a diet filled with sodium and preservatives. These foods not only raise blood pressure but are also major contributors to heart disease and strokes, making it the second leading cause of dialysis.
This list isn't exhaustive, but it's a crucial starting point. Being mindful of sodium, unhealthy fats, refined carbs, and added sugars can help you better manage your blood pressure.
Always consult your physician and remember, high blood pressure may be a silent threat, but with knowledge and action, you can take control of your health and lead a happier, healthier life. Your BP (and your doc) will thank you.

My dad had kidney disease, and he was stable for many years (not on dialysis). One day he went to the VA clinic for routine blood work and, his kidney markers were significantly worse than before. They told him to go straight to the ER. The ER couldn't pinpoint anything wrong except for his kidneys were failing much more than before. He got home, gave me a call and told me, and then I asked him what medications he was taking. He listed them for me and admitted he was taking IBUPROPHEN! One of his doctors told him to take it for his back pain, so he started taking it daily even though his nephrologist forbade it. I scolded him and reminded him that he was not allowed to take ibuprofen. I told him that was why his kidneys were failing. He stopped taking the ibuprofen, went to the nephrologist to recheck his kidney markers, and he was back to his normal.

Thank you Dr. Frita! I think that I found out from watching your video how I ended up with high blood pressure. The only health condition that I had as a little girl is Epilepsy Seizures. I went to a primary doctor one day when I lived in another state and got told that I had high blood pressure. I stay away from processed foods, pasteurized foods, Monosodium Glutamate, Lard, Canola Oil, fried foods, caffeine, caffeinated and carbonated beverages, food coloring, foody dye, energy drinks, sports drinks, soy products which are all known to cause and trigger seizures. Basically, when I was a little girl I never had a weight problem. I had been in the extremely obese range in my late twenties due to me suffering from major depression and wondered how come the doctors never found anything for me having high blood pressure back at this time. All of a sudden that I am in my early 40s the doctor decides to tell me that I have high blood pressure. I never could figure out the reason for me having high blood pressure and my primary care doctor previously couldn't tell me even after I showed him a list of foods that I was eating for a two month period. I love and enjoyed the information you gave in this video. It's quite interesting that some specialist (neurologist) tell patients to eat popcorn for having a healthy type of snack. I have learned that some things contradict when it comes to patients having certain pre-existing medical conditions (Epilepsy, Diabetes, High Cholesterol, High Blood Pressure, Etc.). Thanks so much for the heads up and all this information!

I've been exercising, taking my medicine, water (in moderation)and this seems to work. Duh!🤔 Thank you, for this information.

Thanks Dr. Frita! 😊 I love fresh foods, unfortunately I also have IBD that led to emergency ostomy surgery, and it’s near impossible to eat well. There are so many good foods I can’t eat anymore because of the fiber content and the risk of having food literally getting stuck. I have that happen on average once a month no matter how careful I am about what I eat. For example, I was told in the hospital to avoid whole grain breads & opt for white breads - easy on the intestines but really bad for weight & BP. 😢 Having a chronic illness where you basically have to eat unhealthy foods to avoid trips to the ER is crazy! I miss eating fruits & veggies with skin where most of the nutrients come from.. they all have to have the skins and any seeds removed, and then you have to cook the heck out of them.

I think moderation is the key at the end of the day. if you want to enjoy life, pay attention to numbers and know your levels and you’ll be fine. you will actually enjoy the food that you eat. If you go five days without exceeding your daily salt consumption (especially if you control yourself enough to be at a deficit, which is even better )and one day you end up eating salt more than you should you’ll probably be ok.

It would be nice if the manufacturers would change the levels of salt and other additives.

Excellent video! But not my microwaved popcorn 😮! This video was very informative. I already do a plant based diet, but never thought about microwaved popcorn being bad for HBP.
