I'm Dr. Frita, a board-certified nephrologist in Atlanta, GA, and I've seen firsthand how the right dietary choices can make a world of difference for my patients.
We often don't realize that what we eat plays a significant role in managing high blood pressure. Tens of millions of Americans suffer from this condition, largely due to a diet filled with sodium and preservatives. These foods not only raise blood pressure but are also major contributors to heart disease and strokes, making it the second leading cause of dialysis.
This list isn't exhaustive, but it's a crucial starting point. Being mindful of sodium, unhealthy fats, refined carbs, and added sugars can help you better manage your blood pressure.
Always consult your physician and remember, high blood pressure may be a silent threat, but with knowledge and action, you can take control of your health and lead a happier, healthier life. Your BP (and your doc) will thank you.

My dad had kidney disease, and he was stable for many years (not on dialysis). One day he went to the VA clinic for routine blood work and, his kidney markers were significantly worse than before. They told him to go straight to the ER. The ER couldn't pinpoint anything wrong except for his kidneys were failing much more than before. He got home, gave me a call and told me, and then I asked him what medications he was taking. He listed them for me and admitted he was taking IBUPROPHEN! One of his doctors told him to take it for his back pain, so he started taking it daily even though his nephrologist forbade it. I scolded him and reminded him that he was not allowed to take ibuprofen. I told him that was why his kidneys were failing. He stopped taking the ibuprofen, went to the nephrologist to recheck his kidney markers, and he was back to his normal.

@@MarcKlark Hello!, Dr Frita, would probably suggest various fruits, and vegetables!, especially sweet fruits, like berries, apples, banana, peaches, etc!, BUT, always being mindful of potassium levels, if you're a Chronic Kidney Disease patient! Have A Great Day!
Thank you Dr. Frita! I think that I found out from watching your video how I ended up with high blood pressure. The only health condition that I had as a little girl is Epilepsy Seizures. I went to a primary doctor one day when I lived in another state and got told that I had high blood pressure. I stay away from processed foods, pasteurized foods, Monosodium Glutamate, Lard, Canola Oil, fried foods, caffeine, caffeinated and carbonated beverages, food coloring, foody dye, energy drinks, sports drinks, soy products which are all known to cause and trigger seizures. Basically, when I was a little girl I never had a weight problem. I had been in the extremely obese range in my late twenties due to me suffering from major depression and wondered how come the doctors never found anything for me having high blood pressure back at this time. All of a sudden that I am in my early 40s the doctor decides to tell me that I have high blood pressure. I never could figure out the reason for me having high blood pressure and my primary care doctor previously couldn't tell me even after I showed him a list of foods that I was eating for a two month period. I love and enjoyed the information you gave in this video. It's quite interesting that some specialist (neurologist) tell patients to eat popcorn for having a healthy type of snack. I have learned that some things contradict when it comes to patients having certain pre-existing medical conditions (Epilepsy, Diabetes, High Cholesterol, High Blood Pressure, Etc.). Thanks so much for the heads up and all this information!
THIS video should be played at schools.

The grocery store ain’t it no more!! I’m proud of myself cuz I rarely go to the center and freezer isles unless I’m getting a requested item from the kids because I try to make it home.. it’s hard and sad at the same time we can’t just eat healthy instead we have to be scientists!!
Moderation, balance, and regularly exercising is key Too much of any one thing can be bad for you. Don’t be afraid to eat just be mindful of how much and how often. Don’t drive yourself crazy because the air we breathe ain’t healthy.

Hi Dr. Frita. I am a new subbie to your channel and I love it. I have learned a lot and thank you for your support. Keep up the good work!
You need to be the next US Surgeon General
Change the food, I love Bushes vegetarian beans, Loaded with sugar, most of the sugar is in the sauce. take half or more of what you plan to eat and rinse it under water.put them back together and heat, add some cumin.
Thank you, Dr. Frita.
Thanks for letting me tag along with you at the grocery store. I need to do more label-checking to reduce saturated fats and high salt and sugar in making food choices . I prefer to modify my diet instead of popping pills. Thank you so much!!

It’s NOT the sodium people, it’s the Excessive Garbage Carbohydrates. Keep your carb count under control and sodium becomes irrelevant. And btw……most fermented foods, while high in sodium, are very good for you.
Very helpful thank you very much❤

Here's my problem. It's hereditary. I don't eat pork, no meat, chicken once in awhile. No can foods. And, my BP goes up for no reason. I am not a big fruit eater or veggies. But, I try. I stopped most of the junk food. And, lost about 15 pounds in two three months. Sounds good right? But, I'm straving myself. I honestly don't know what to eat day by day. I'm completely lost now.

We can't eat too much from the grocery store unless it's fresh foods. We need grocery stores with only produce because all box items are not good. They are making money on these foods that are not good for you.
Thank you for your valuable information. I didn't realize that there was salt in the spices. I will be reading the labels carefully next time.

How about frozen veggies?
Mrs Frita, for someone like me who's BP is around that high number in your promo. Today 170/80 was at a "" normal range and a good day for me. My Doc & Nurses say, I may have been dealing with this for years w/o strokes, dizzyness. I don't know. I've been monitoring this with my D&N. I've been exercising, taking my medicine, water (in moderation)and this seems to work. Duh!🤔 Thank you, for this information.
Thanks Dr. Frita! 😊 I love fresh foods, unfortunately I also have IBD that led to emergency ostomy surgery, and it’s near impossible to eat well. There are so many good foods I can’t eat anymore because of the fiber content and the risk of having food literally getting stuck. I have that happen on average once a month no matter how careful I am about what I eat. For example, I was told in the hospital to avoid whole grain breads & opt for white breads - easy on the intestines but really bad for weight & BP. 😢 Having a chronic illness where you basically have to eat unhealthy foods to avoid trips to the ER is crazy! I miss eating fruits & veggies with skin where most of the nutrients come from.. they all have to have the skins and any seeds removed, and then you have to cook the heck out of them.
Great day Dr Freida Luv U beautiful ThankU

Hi Dr. Frida, thank you for so much good information. I have a question. I have made quite a few changes regarding salt. Got some ways to go what kind of salt is good if we have to season our food vegetables, I have tried different kinds. I’m still looking for something that I can season my food spike my blood pressure. ???
DOCTOR FRITA.....GREAT VIDEO, VERY ACCURATE INFORMATION, ...I LIVE THIS MOSTLY A MEDITERRANEAN DIET (MOSTLY PLANT BASED WAY OF EATING)...I EXERCISE DAILY,...I DO LIGHT WEIGHTS, WALK 7 DAYS A WEEK....30 TO 40 SQUATS 6 DAYS WEEK.....
This is easier said than done. Especially in urban neighborhoods. Just on grocery bag of healthy food is a whole paycheck. Of course the unhealthy foods are cheaper to buy and when u are on a fixed income or get SNAp once a month its not that easy to focus soley on buying fresh fruits and veggies
I like this set up at the grocery store
The frozen food aisle almost killed me.
❤this! Can you recommend a soup recipe?

You’re welcome, I hope you found this information to be helpful.
what is a good salt substitute
I think moderation is the key at the end of the day. if you want to enjoy life, pay attention to numbers and know your levels and you’ll be fine. you will actually enjoy the food that you eat. If you go five days without exceeding your daily salt consumption (especially if you control yourself enough to be at a deficit, which is even better )and one day you end up eating salt more than you should you’ll probably be ok.
