Ever since Nene and Greg of the Real Housewives of Atlanta have been so open in sharing Greg's diagnosis with colorectal cancer, I have been getting a lot of really excellent questions about colon cancer. What is colon cancer? Am I at risk for colon cancer? When should I be screened for colon cancer?
Colon cancer is the third most common cancer in both men and women. Men are more likely to get colon cancer than women, and African Americans have the highest rate of colon cancer of all ethnic groups in the United States.
The good news is that colon cancer is potentially preventable and treatable, especially when caught early on.
What is colon cancer? Colon cancer occurs when there is a malignant growth or tumor in the large intestine, also known as the colon, and or in the rectum. The large intestine and the rectum are at the tail end of the digestive system.
Now there are many celebrities who have been very gracious in sharing their journeys with colon cancer, including Chadwick Boseman, Darryl Strawberry, Sharon Osborne, and the notorious RBG, justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg.
What are the risk factors for colon cancer? Advanced age is the major risk factor for colon cancer. In fact, 90% of people diagnosed with colon cancer, are older than the age of 50. Now that being said, you can be a young person and still get colon cancer.
Darryl Strawberry was only 36 years old when he was diagnosed with colon cancer and Katie Couric's late husband, Jay Monahan, died at the age of 42 in 1998 with colon cancer. So, you really can be at risk at different ages.
Another risk factor, obesity, cigarette smoking, excessive alcohol use, these are also risk factors for colon cancer. Your lifestyle has a lot to do with your risk. If you have a high-fat diet or a diet that is high in processed meats, that's a risk factor for colon cancer. Also having a low fiber diet is a risk for colon cancer.
Have you or anyone you know had an experience with colon cancer? Comment below and join the discussion.

I was diagnosed with stage IIb colon cancer at age 42. I was fortunate to be able to have surgery without chemo or radiation. My symptoms were daily nausea, constipation, occasional abdominal pain, and one episode of blood in stool. I understand that the symptoms could have been unrelated to colon cancer, but they could have been. According to guidelines, my risk for developing colon cancer was low. There was no family history of colon cancer, non-smoker, average weight, and less than 45-50 years of age. Therefore colon cancer or screening for colon cancer was never mentioned. I was treated for GERD and H-pylori. I finally told my physician that I felt like I was not being helped. She ordered a CT, and things went from there. I am often told that I am lucky to find out early enough to be treated. Glad I was proactive. I went to the gastroenterologist once with my mom, and the doctor was going over her history. He asked about colon cancer history, and she told him that her daughter was diagnosed. His comment was, Oh! Did she die"? I was like, no....I'm right here. Smh.

Yes, excellent video, I ignored results from screening, afraid, thought I had a false positive due to diarrhea in sample. Only fooled myself, emergency colon cancer surgery, stage 3. That was in January, just had my 6 month CT scan and waiting results. Please don’t do what I did out of fear or denial. Seek a doctor you can really talk with and together increase your survival years. Blessings for courage. Thanks Dr Frita 🦋

Hello Dr. Frita, thank you for sharing this video. My mom was 59 years old when she passed away from colon cancer (June 2000). I have decided to change my eating habits. I have found a holistic or naturopath doctor who has helped me eat healthier and make sure I also take the proper nutrition to boost my immunity and prevent being malnourished. It has been 10 years since I have made a change and have been using Youngevity products, which have helped prevent cancer and helped me with other ailments I've had. I agree with you that we must change our lifestyle if there is a history of cancer in our family. The screenings are necessary at least once a year but I disagree with the colonoscopy procedure. I have never got this done and have chosen a different method. So far I have been getting my blood checked and "poop-check." The results are always good. Thank God!

I had this during 2020. My note is that I didn't feel any pain or have any symptoms but once I had the colonocosopy they found it. My advice for men and women is to have this done before you fall ill and possibly lose your life. I lived through it because I have good doctors whom took great care of me and now I'm cancer free and about to have another treatment to make sure nothing has grown back. Go to your doctor, listen to your doctor.

@@WISHBONEL7 Yes I was. I woke up in the recovery room with the nurse calling my name and telling me it's time to wake up. The worst part about it is the fasting and cleaning out of your system before it. I had Chik fil a right after the appointment.

@@anamanzak9920 There was some blood in my stool but not a lot. Only my Dr noticed. The hardest part of it was the fasting and laxatives to clean you out before the procedure. You will sleep through it and have no pain afterwards.

Dr. Frita you are God's health angle, your page should be renamed "Dr. Frita God"s health angel" seriously! The information you have shared with me ,and others are awesome! Many lives will be saved if people will look out for these signs and be screened soon as possible. I' ve had polyps removed seven years ago, and I'm going to make an appointment for colon screening and kidney. I have many of the signs you called out, I can't thank you enough. Rita Jones
