And on March 4th, 2019, at the age of 52, he died of a massive stroke. This news has rocked the pop culture nation, and has many people asking why did Luke Perry get a stroke at such an early age? A stroke occurs when the proper blood supply to a portion of the brain is cut off. According to the American Heart Association's 2017 heart disease and stroke statistics, 795,000 strokes occur in the United States each year. And seven million people who live in the United States have had strokes. The average age when a stroke occurs is actually decreasing, it's getting younger. For women, the average age is 73, and for men, the average age is 68. Being over the age of 40 in and of itself is a risk factor for strokes.
There are two types of strokes, an ischemic stroke, and a hemorrhagic stroke. An ischemic stroke occurs when the blood flow to an artery that supplies the brain is blocked if it's clotted off. And there are actually two types of ischemic strokes, there is a thrombotic stroke, which occurs when a plaque or fatty deposits block that brain artery and cause a decrease in blood flow and oxygen to that portion of the brain. And then the other type of ischemic stroke is an embolic stroke, which is when a plaque or a clot travels from outside of the brain into an artery that supplies a portion of the brain.
Some sources of embolic strokes include the neck arteries or the carotid arteries. If ever you have a plaque or a clot in a carotid artery, it can travel from that neck vein into a brain artery, causing an embolic stroke. Another source can be the heart, especially for patients who have diseases like atrial fibrillation, or AFIB. You can develop a clot in the heart, and that clot can actually travel from the heart and end up lodged in a brain artery, causing an embolic stroke. So, two types of ischemic strokes, thrombotic and embolic.
The other major category of a stroke is a hemorrhagic stroke or a brain bleed. This occurs when a brain artery actually ruptures and leaks out blood. In the United States, ischemic strokes are more common than hemorrhagic strokes. In fact, 87% of strokes are ischemic, while only 13% are hemorrhagic.
What are the symptoms of a stroke? Symptoms can include facial weakness, of face drooping. When a person who's had a stroke tries to smile, and only half of their face will smile. You can get arm weakness, leg weakness. You can have a problem with your balance, have confusion, memory loss, dizziness, headaches, blurry vision, numbness. Remember to think FAST, F-A-S-T.
Remember there are two types of strokes, ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. And you must think FAST. If you see facial drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulty, it's time to call 911.
I hope this video helps you or a loved one identify the warning signs of a stroke.
As always, I want you to make sure you remember to take care of you, prioritize yourself. No matter what you're running around doing, if you don't take time to prioritize your health, you may not be around to enjoy the fruits of your labor. So, take care of you, and do your best to live your healthiest, happiest life.

Many people could benefit more from leaving your printed lists (enlarged) and diagrams 'on screen' while you give explanations. At first they though it was a Stroke due to him having everything like a Real stroke and was life flight to Las Vegas from our small city. He is also has HP, Diabetic and also has a VP brain shunt. I'm on him all the time. But I noticed he has had a few small TIA's and the hospital doctor said it was nothing to worry about.

I had a stroke 10 years ago,it only affected my balance for a short time, my mother in law died from a stroke 2 weeks ago because she didn't take her medicine for high blood pressure, so it pays to get regular check up's from a doctor

I just want answers to why I've had so many scans and test I have a protein s deficiency, that’s all they have found. I have no AFib, no dieases, I am on Coumadin now. I was on Xarelto. @@leogonzalez6751 see that's what's wrong with these doctors u can have something definitely wrong with because they looking at u from the outside instead of the outside nobody can't tell how u feel u know your body these damn doctors needs to start looking more closely at the patient if someone say something is wrong these doctors needs to start listening

Dr I think I have had a mini stroke 2 yrs ago and have told my neurologist which I had been referred to due to Tremors on my hand which had now gotten worst on my leg on the same side. I am waiting for an appointment with neurologist again. My question is could an MRI miss the signs of a TIA?

Hello Dr frita i live in The Netherlands and i had a stroke in 2022 and i have a cat scan done but they told me i have nothing how is dat even possible stil now. I still have tingling feelings in my left hand (ring finger and my pinky) i struggle with talking. I have a strained throat. I lost a lot of weight.. and I can’t go to the doctor because everybody keeps telling me I don’t have anything. No diseases. I wasn’t able to walk for 2 weeks, I couldn’t speek for 3-4 days. My left arm was paralyzed same goes for my left leg. The ambulance came but they was laughing at me. When I left the hospital they didn’t gave me any medicine or something. I don’t know what to do…. I’m already 41 years old. I don’t know what to do doctor..

A few years ago , I went through a lot of stress, also I did not sleep for 3 nights in a row. The third night I took a sleeping tablet and did not help, and started feeling very dizzy ,also I felt like my left ear was blocked. No other symptoms.I thought the symptoms were because I took the sleeping pill ,and could not sleep, and that,s why I was dizzy. After I observed that the dizziness does not go away, I started to think, that maybe I will have a stroke, but I did not call an ambulance, because I thought I was not in great danger. My husband drove me to hospital, went to Emergency, waited for a while, and a doctor came, talked with me, asked some questions ,I told him I suspect I will have a stroke, he said he does not think so, and also told me, they will keep me there for a while ,and will send me home.. Also he said another doctor will come to see me., soon. I told him, maybe I do not have the classical symptoms, but still could be stroke, but he already made up his mind , that it is not, especially that , mentally I was very alert. , and in good shape. The other doctor arrived after a few hours, and by then, my right side was completed paralysed. I recovered to a degree, but I am limping badly, and my right arm is not well, has restricted movements, the fingers do not work properly, so , I am disabled. I am sure , that if at the hospital , they treated me in time, maybe , the damage would be minimised. I did not expect this to happen, in a civilised,Western Country like Australia. It could happen in a third world country, and especially when the patient suggests the doctor, the diagnoses..It was very disappointing. Now, I avoid going to the doctors, and hospitals at all. I distrust them. I study as much as possible , about health, and I am my own doctor. What troubles me, is that what happened to me, can happen to other people as well.as long as incompetent doctor works at Emergency in a big hospital. Maybe I did a mistake , too, that I did not call an ambulance. Learn from this, will be useful some day.

My mother had a massive stroke very recently and didn’t make it, we had the paramedics at the house just the night before for a nose bleed, they checked her blood pressure and said it’s fine and that it’s better to take her to a family practitioner for the nose bleeding than to a emergency room full of Covid-19 patients. Her nose bleed finally stopped with applying pressure at home, the very next day she had the massive stock. We wonder if she was at the hospital if they would’ve picked up on anything to save her from the life ended stoke.
