Now, the truth of the matter is that most cases of high blood pressure have no clear underlying cause, they have no clear etiology. This is primary or essential hypertension. But about 5 to 10% of the cases of high blood pressure do have an underlying cause, secondary hypertension. Now, if you have high blood pressure and it is actually caused by an underlying condition that could be potentially treatable or reversible, don't you want to know? Today, I'm going to give you 10 common causes of high blood pressure.
Facts About Hypertension
Hypertension is the leading cause of heart disease, strokes, and kidney failure. And about 45% of Americans have high blood pressure, and many of them don't quite have it managed well. Most hypertension is due to primary or essential hypertension, meaning that there is no clear cause, no underlying etiology to be identified. But about 5 to 10% of the cases of high blood pressure actually do have an underlying cause or secondary hypertension, and that's what we'll be talking about today.
10 Causes of High Blood Pressure:
1. Thyroid Disease
2. Obstructive Sleep Apnea
3. Chronic Kidney Disease
4. Cushing's Syndrome
5. Conn Syndrome
6. Brain Tumor
7. Coarctation of the Aorta
8. Pregnancy
9. Obesity
10. Drugs
In addition to the 10 causes of high blood pressure I just gave you, there are many more, including pheochromocytoma, or a high sodium diet. In fact, please watch my video on high sodium foods to avoid for more information. To prevent high blood pressure, you definitely want to have a good relationship with your physician, so definitely consult your doctor.
You also want to implement some excellent lifestyle choices like regular exercise and eating healthy foods. Make sure you drink plenty of water and have a low sodium diet. And very importantly, if you are at risk for having a secondary cause, you want to make sure you explore the underlying causes.

I'm an African American male. I'm 56 years old, 5'10 and 158 pounds. I have always had a regular exercise program, but when I turned 55 my blood pressure just shot up. I started doing a little research, and discovered that the foods that I eat have a direct effect on my blood pressure. As a process of elimination, oatmeal was a huge factor. I stopped consuming oatmeal, and my blood pressure dropped drastically. Popcorn! I ate a lot of popcorn. I cut that out. My BP dropped even more. Wheat bread, was another factor. Alcohol was also a big factor in my BP. I took on a Keto lifestyle by significantly reducing my sugar, carb and alcohol intake, and now my BP stays around 125/81. It's not perfect, but it is a long way from 178/96.

Actually 125/81 is pretty damn amazing.... If you want to try and be "perfect", you might want to try Ceylon Cinnamon a quarter to half a teaspoon in a Blueberry, Chia Seed and Banana smoothie. When I make a smoothie short of the kitchen sink being in there; I add minced walnuts, pecans and almonds, spinach, olive oil, honey, cayenne pepper 1/8 of a teaspoon, pineapple and Greek yogurt. It's a meal and it's real everything. Congratulations and fantastic job 👍 Frequently my blood pressure would be 180/110......a heart attack, several small strokes. I was a smoker, moderate drinker, ate poorly, so I had to get on board, do the meds and change everything with light meds now, the other day my readings were averaging 110/69!

I have been diagnosed with Conns Syndrome Primary Hyperaldosteronism. For anyone with this the key ways I've found to combat it is a low sodium diet, no alcohol, no caffeine, plenty of water and plenty of exercise. After exercise my BP can drop to under 120/80. I'm on BP drugs but it's now under control after years of investigation.

My 95 yo Mother was diagnosed with high blood pressure and given meds--her only meds. She died from an aortic aneurism. It was pressing on the kidneys driving the blood pressure up. Have know 3 men in their 50s that died during their sleep from the same....I only have HBP on waking and found that post-nasal dripping during sleep was driving it. Stopped sugar, etc. and now in normal range.

Sodium, sugar, caffeine (in tea, coffee, chocolate), dehydration, and stress elevate my bp. Beets and cranberry juice help lower my bp quickly, though I stopped eating beets due to allergies. I try to keep my bp below 119/79. I consume very, very low amounts of sodium and sugar, not just throughout the day, but per whatever I consume. I exercise daily.

High carb diet or SAD diet was the reason I was on meds almost 9 years. I went low carb and unexpectedly my bp normalized in 4 days. Why? Because each gram of carb (I ate 200-300 grams a day) carries with it 4-5 grams of water. This burden of fluid drives BP up. I read books and watched videos like this and no change until I changed my diet. Just wanted to lose some weight and that happened after other chAnges happened. Also, I get to use more salt now and still by BP is 118/75. No meds since 2018, I’m 58 yo.

Cause honey, your lives are way better than the lives of other people in most countries around the world! If you think you got it so bad here, please I beg you to take get on a plane and travel the world and don’t hang out in the high tourist areas but go into the actual communities with the natives and suddenly that bs narrative you have been told and you have been telling all your life will suddenly seize to exist! You all are over privileged class who refuses to acknowledge that fact! In America and only America you have the power and the right to become the biggest pos or the most successful person in the world..but guess what? It’s easier to be pos or barely making it and just complain complain complain than to go out there and work your ass off until you become what you desire! Who you are or who you become is up to you ! It’s not the country’s fault bc Africans from Africa come here and kick ass everyday, they are extremely successful group of people and they are foreigners that don’t even speak the language, or barely speaks it…same thing goes to Asians Indians and even most Hispanics! So you are the captain of your ship! Or you can hand over your ship to government and then you have no right to complain bc you made that choice

Ha! ask the Dr questions? They take one reading and write a prescription. No discussion. The most I was told when I asked was to cut down on salt. I don't use salt. The only time my bp is high is when I'm in the dr office.

Brilliant, so comprehensive. I can never understand how I have pressure of 160/100 but just a pulse of 60 to 65.. Makes no sense..

How and who was the blood pressure readings determined on? Why would the numbers change like that to where 130 is now the number? The same is true for diabetes and other diseases. The numbers for those diseases vary from country to country. I don’t understand it. Could you please shed light on this? Thanks for all you’re doing. Shalom

I was diagnosed with nodules on my thyroid, aside from that I feel like I have an increase amount of cortisol due to insomnia too, and this has affected my adrenals resulting in increased aldosterone levels in my blood, my doctor diagnosed me with "essential" hypertension, but refuses to do anything about it other than to prescribe meds, she hasn't even done a thyroid panel but I did take an ultrasound of my thyroid revealing nodules that she said was too small to do anything about, Also! I suspect I might have an issue with my ovaries because of constant pain in my left lower abdominal area, all my glands are suffering, and it's all related, if I can just find a sensible, unbiased PCP, I'm at the VA and have to accept who they assign me to as my doctor.....BUT! I'm implementing much Self-care until God directs me to where I need to be🙏🏽

My adrenal was causing my hbp post covid. Meds didn’t work. The only thing that did was sea salt in water and magnesium plus low carb, lots of veggies and a little meat and fish diet. My doctor is clueless. Figured this out on my own. Hope this helps.

I was diagnosed with hypertension 10 years ago and the physician straightaway put me on meds without telling the reason and since then I am on medication. I am from India and I work as a medical transcriptionist where I work for multiple clients from USA and I know unlike USA in India doctors really don't talk about the underlying cause or want to find the same. Now as it has been long I know sadly I can't stop the meds but your videos help people like us..Thank you doctor for your effort.

First of all I didn't want your opinion and its not about the efficacy, its about approaching the patients and I don't have to go to USA as I know what I need to know and one more thing for your betterment, it's not always necessary to prove you are right and others are wrong, rather sometimes you have to understand what is the intent.
