The green trains are not "crappy" but you're right about US trains. The green trains offer connections between small towns and villages,often in remote places, and are very affordable. They allow farmers to take their produce to the markets to sell. School children often take them to commute to their schools.

That is a modern green train. The green colour is different than the old ones. Also the seats are modern ones. I love the old green sleeper train. I board it at 9 in the evening, next morning I am in Beijing. First class has only 4 beds.

Try Guangzhou Shanghai with that trip. 30+ hours. I tried at 2011. I took 3 bottles of baijiu with me at that time. I found friends at thetrain canteen. Then we don't sleep. We talk, play cards, mahjong, sang songs... That was great. 😎😍☺️

I used to take one of those old green skins around 2000 to go Uni, from Jinan to Wuhan about 18 hours. It's a totally different story.

I have experience once in China Green-Skin- Train many years ago (est…2017), from Beijing (5:00pm)To TaiYuan (5:30am); we were afraid we might overslept when arrived… but didn’t worry… the train attendant has a service to wake you up 20min before the destination….. we were surprised that the service is really good…

Very nice green colour if the train! I once took the train Shenzhen - Guangzhou, very nice and modern, reminded of an airplane inside!

Back in the mid-1980s, I was on an Express train from somewhere around HuangSan (Yellow Mountains) to Shanghai direct. And it did eventually. It was a very crowded milk run stopping at many stops. I found out later that there are many levels of Express like Limited, Direct and others. I managed to get a counter to sit in, not on but in, some cubby hole. A once-in-a-lifetime experience. Oh well, I got over it but I still remember it. Cheers.

I always enjoyed the overnight soft sleeper berths in China. Unfortunately on some lines, e.g. Chengdu to Guilin, the older Z trains have been replaced with G and D trains. Travelling by night saves daytime fir sightseeing.

I used to travel between Nanning and Jingmen in Hubei many years ago, 2005, to the school I worked at. Had to catch the slow trains and it would take more than 18 hrs. Not allowed to sleep on the train if in a seat and one policeman told me to stay awake. A friend of mine who I met on the train told the Police that I had been travelling for hours and needed to sleep. After that everything was fine. When the high speed came around it was much easier and cheaper.
