Not slow and not commie enough, bro. The train you took looks like a "direct express" train among the slow class. You should vlog the the "regular slow" among the slow class, such train No. 7053/4 from Zibo to Mount Tai and back. Or the non-air conditioned train No. K8261/2 from Jinan to Weihai. What you took was a 高阻绿-colored blue train rather than a genuine green car. K8261 is the genuine green car and 7053/4 is a red train, both very authentic. Here's a list of genuine green trains you may take: zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E4%B8%AD%E5%9B%BD%E9%93%81%E8%B7%AF%E7%AE%A1%E5%86%85%E9%9D%9E%E7%A9%BA%E8%B0%83%E5%88%97%E8%BD%A6%E8%BD%A6%E6%AC%A1

It's ironic that the Amtrak in America is around 130km/h avg. speed and it is considered as "fast train" in the US. But the 160km/h (avg. around 120km/h) "Green Skin Train" in China is called as "slow train" 😄

Because in the past the green skin trains might not reach 160km/h in reality. For example, in my province (Fujian), green skin trains never reached a speed of more than 100km/h throughout its entire operating history. And then we have the real High Speed Rail for comparison. Initially, before HSR era, the slow train refered to those trains which stopped at a lot of stations (including small towns), compared to 'fast trains' which used significantly less time for the same route (ran faster and skipped many unimportant stations). I remember the 'fast trains' then were often red+silver skinned and slow trains were green skinned. Maybe this is why people today still refer to green skinned train as slow train

Thought I would just post this about the "fastest" train in North America between Toronto and Montreal here in Canada. :) :) :) "The best connection is provided by train number 66, which rushes from Toronto to Montreal in 4 hours and 38 minutes. The resulting average speed of more than 120km/h makes this train the fastest train in North America at the time of writing. (The Acela express between Boston and New-York has a higher top speed, but lower average speed)." Your "slow" train in China would be a Super Duper Express train in USA or Canada.

Most green-skinned trains in China travel somewhere between 100-160kph. They have to travel at around 140-160kph on double-track mainlines in order not to slow down other trains, but on single-track branch lines, they usually travel at less than 120kph. On mountainous single-track routes like the Qinghai-Tibet, Baoji-Chengdu, and old Chengdu-Kunming lines, they might even have to slow down to 60-70kph on some sections due to safety issues. Additionally, the types of available locomotives really determine how fast a green-skinned train could go. If you got newer ones like the HXD1D, HXD3D, SS8, SS9, DF11, etc., those trains could easily travel up to 160kph. In fact, the late 1990s SS8 could sustain 170kph speed when pulling just 10 coaches on the Guangzhou-Shenzhen route. However, if they were pulled by 1970s era DF4 diesel locomotives (locomotives that I grew up with), they could only travel up to 120kph at best. Finally, the green-skinned coaches (an improved variant of the type 25 passenger coach, I think) you took aren't really "communist-era'" trains because they were actually designed in the 1990s. The real "communist-era" green-skinned trains are the type 22 series non-AC coaches invented in the 1950s based on Soviet designs. They are all in museums now.

In China, train ticket price is only related to travel distance. The price of high speed train in China is about 0.46 RMB per km, which is only one third or even one forth of that of Japan and Europe. The government still keep those green-skin-train operating to meet the need of low income people. the 160km speed is not very fast but it's acceptable, and it still has very good on-time rate, that important, and the most important, the price is only one sixth of the price of high speed train, 0.08 RMB per km. that's cheap like hell so that everybody can afford it. I travelled by that train between Jinan and Dongying multiple times. Ticket price is just about 20 CNY, or was, at least. And that's why that many passengers are still happy with this slow and old train. Long-distance coaches are indeed faster (consider that this station is insanely far away from where I lived), but I suffer from car sickness. It's so warm seeing someone on KZread visiting my hometown. Btw you actually visited the district I lived in in the previous vid.

I think this is a type 25T passenger train, top speed is 160 km/h. It is the fastest normal train in China. The train number on your ticket start from “T”(eg T134). It means Tekuai(Extra Fast). Few years ago, the railway company decided to paint all the normal speed passengers train to this dark green color. So it is hard to tell the difference between the real old “green skin train” and this new one. These 25T passengers train used to be white and blue body. There is also type 25G, top speed 120km/h, slightly slower than 25T. The train number start from K (eg K6504). It means Kuai (Fast). Ticket prices is also slightly cheaper. It used to be red color body but now it’s repainted as dark green as well. The real old “green skin train” uses 25B passenger train. It doesn’t come with AC. Price incredible cheap. Normally there is no letter in the train number (eg 8645). Please correct me if I’m wrong

Honestly I believe that green train is not the slow one if your train number begins with T (or Z probably?), which is just one level lower than the high-speed-railway. Back in the day, those normal trains are divided by color and train number, green skin was the slowest which approximately just over 100km/h, maximum 120km/h, and the train number is always just number or begin with K followed by numbers; Red skin had the medium speed and was the most common one, usually 120km/h, train number begin with K; Blue skin was the fastest one except for CRH or high-speed-railway, usually 140km/h to 160km/h and train number begin with T or Z. However, after CRH become more and more common the railway corporation decided to paint all normal train in green color, so only the train number and the speed mark on the skin of the train can be used to classify the speed of train now

As a Chinese rail fan, I can tell you that "Hard Sleepers" were actually hard back in the 70s and 80s but since more modern rolling stocks were put into service since the 90s the "hard" and "soft" is actually more like "second class" and "first class" where in hard sleepers each compartment is composed of 6 beds which are narrower and soft sleepers composed of 4 wider beds. Also soft sleeper compartments have doors which provide more privacy and are suitable for a family journey. They also have a type of cars called "Luxurious Soft Sleeper" which only consists of 2 beds and each compartment has its own toilet. This kind of compartment is rare and you may only see them on certain express routes or designated tourism trains.

The official English name for the "green skin" train is Green Clad trains, Russian. "Fast slow train" should be express traditional trains and no, the other more modern train is not considered high-speed train either. It's considered a non-locomotive train which means the trains are powered and not pulled by a locomotive like the traditional train. There is a real high-speed train which is built on an entirely different platform and it has its own high-speed train station,

I never had the opportunity to travel the slow train (160km is not that slow) in China . I have been on the fast trains a few times even way up front , which was really comfortable. Best part was the looking out the windows , seeing how things are done but the slow train would be better for that. You really can't compare China and South African trains , the slow train in China would be like the short commute Gautrain that we consider fast. Compared to South Africa , I traveled Metro Rail from Cape Town to Simons Town a few times in the last 10 years just for the scenery change and you can jump on and off at all the stops and have a drink. Good day out but if If you hit 60km/h its a lot. Did the Rovos Rail from Pretoria to Cape Town about 2 years ago which is real luxury but the condition of the rails from Pretoria to about Klerksdorp is atrocious. It's almost like riding on a pothole road. Was not like that 20 years ago when I last rode trains in SA. Also rode a steam train from Cape Town to Elgin in the Cape and back a couple of years ago. Also a good day trip for a vlogger I would think. You really see a different perspective from a train. I would really like to do a train trip in China if I ever return.

Jerry, is it really called Communist Slow Train - or is that your word? I took the highspeed train and that was amazing. But the Slow Train is amazing too. All the trains in China are so clean, well organized and PUNCTUAL! The staff in the highspeed train I took was also amazing, She distributed the hot lunch (rice with meat & vegetable) to everybody. After she picked up the dirty dishes, the train looked as clean and orderly as before. Ditto with the train restroom. The highspeed train I took had the western sit-on toilet. But I learned from Greece that in the old times Greece also used the squat toilet. I saw them in an old medieval habitat for nuns in the mountain. The squat toilet, common in Asia, is actually more hygienic than the sit on type, Your body doesn't touch anything.

I don't think he is using the word "communist" in a bad way. In fact in the west this word has been misunderstood so much that it almost equals evil. But in China communist means everybody has the equal rights of having inexpensive access to infrastructure, like transportation, electric, communication, etc. So this train actually is "communist", which provides an acceptable and accessible way for people in rural areas to travel.

@@alexg3744 Agree, Jerry Goode doesn't use the word 'communist' in a bad way. What I want to know is whether in China the slow train is really called 'COmmunist Slow Train'

@@TS-hd3mc That I can assure you it is not 😂 Typically people call it the "Green-Skinned Train" (Lyu-Pi-Che) because of the green color of the carriages, but definitely not the communist train 😂

@@alexg3744 Thank you for the explanation. I learn something interesting from you about the word 'communist' in China. CPC is the only communist party in the world who sucessfully transforms a dirt poor country into a superpower within one generation. Hats off for CPC! Jerry Goode is an excellent reporter. He was just using irony to attract attention to his video.

@@TS-hd3mc Glad you liked it, hope there are more people like you. Unfortunately most people from the west hear the word "communist" and just freak the hell out. They don't understand and don't want to understand why most Chinese people actually support their party.

Hey mate, glad everything is okay and the content is still flowing, I of course still didn't get back to China yet, I am collecting my new visa next Tuesday and have my flight already booked for May, so expect to see me around soon. Haha and hey, I am landing in Qingdao, also my 14 days quarantine will be in Qingdao too and then I will go from there to my city in the south. It was cheaper from London to Qingdao, everything else is sky-high in prices, see you soon mate 😎 Ps: I have done an epic journey on one of these trains, Changchun (North China) all the way down to Shanghai and it was back in the early days when they had no high-speed trains (around 2007), it took me 29 hours and wow it was an experience but finally glad to get off the train being on it for that long lol.
