    I feel this really has to be said, as without this being mentioned, the video is very incomplete: one of the top reasons building in China is cheap and fast is its political system (of a police state). It's very easy to plan and build if you don't have to worry about environmental NGOs, unions, oversight agencies, bad press or complaining public. I applaud China they invest into the right sector, but the cost at which that's happening wouldn't be imaginable anywhere else in the world, where there is a rule of law, protecting the country's citizens from governmental abuse such as taking away their land to build on.

When the Chinese government built these large-scale projects, it was full of blood, violence and repression. For this reason, when these large-scale projects are newly built, the Chinese government will often use threats, violence and intimidation to force citizens to give up their houses. If you don't want to, they will send triads to harass your family all night, and they will directly excavate and crush your house.     @@MikeGill87 It is true that China is not a democracy like those that exist in the West (which are not perfect democracies either) but you are wrong if you think that the Chinese people feel that they live under oppression. The vast majority are satisfied with the gigantic advances they have made in recent decades. Poverty has decreased a lot and the middle class is getting bigger and with better education and income. Ask any Chinese in your country or city and they will confirm what I am saying.

    I'm from the UK now living in China. The high speed rail here makes the GWR high speed trains back in the UK feel Victorian. The trains here are modern, clean, safe, fast, punctual, have hot water facilities, clean toilets, smart ticketing and seating... They are all electrified and it's even more modern than the Eurostar and the original Japanese bullet train. You can even order takeaways to be delivered to your seat on your journey. And most importantly, it is crazy cheap compared to the UK where it's expensive, no one gets a seat and always late.

    If China takes over Hong Kong their life will change somewhat. Similar to the White Republicans taking the vote away from non-white people. You have some rights but they are not equal to the Whites. White Republicans fear the year 2037 when White Americans become a minority in America.

    ​@@andrewdouglas1963 Maybe in some cases but first of all they have a different approach to civil rights. They're civil oriented people. Ask them f.e. if they felt oppressed with pandemic's public policys, and also look at its practical results and ours, we did it better? Really? We ARE better, seriously? Huge majority of chinese population look as happy as we, confident in their system and humble people, humbler than us, they not try to teach to any other nation "how must live"... man, they're just common people with their own way, with massive achievements and counting. Also with their own problems and things to improve like anybody. Throwing them only sermons is the best measure of our legendary western arrogancy : sadly we feel being the measure of all the things and people. By the way : I'm liberal philosophically. But not a holy priest of the civil organization in a religious fashion... Empaty my friend, a bit of empaty and the world will be a better place.

    The best part of China's high speed train is you can order food from any of the restaurants in the station on your phone and designate at what time during which stop to have it delivered to you. During the 2-3 minutes stop, your food is already there waiting to be distributed to you on the train. I miss it so much.

    I lived in the city of Weihai for 7 years, from 2013 to 2019 and, I was lucky to see how in about 5 years they built not only one, but two high-speed train stations to connect the city to the national network . It was really mind blowing!

    I am foreigner living in China, last time I checked, from Shanghai to Nanjing (300km away) there are 400 trains a day including more than 300 high-speed trains a day... counting only shanghai to nanjing, not including the nanjing to shanghai one... at some period0 of the day as many train depart as for a busy metro... every few minutes a train leave... they can handle it because they have many many tracks for people to board.

    @@goutam5052 fastest train is 1h, many trains are 1:20-30 as they stop at a few stations on the way, some are 2h as they stop at more stations... some train take more time but they are not high speed trains.

    Transportation always provides a lot of indirect incomes like tourism. Those who can't afford to live in cities can now find homes far away. But in the future, other countries can't afford to build high-speed rail because of the increased cost of commodities.

    Last century belonged to America. This century will belong to China. China is more nimble and intellectually progressive which allows technology and science discoveries to happen faster. American companies ran to China in the 1990's in order to produce goods at a lower cost which benefited their shareholders who are the number 1 priority. Country is not number 1 to American companies. These companies were hoping to get access to the 1.4 billion Chinese market. In order to have a company in China, a Chinese company has to own 51%. Wonder how the technology transfer happened? Yes, China has stole technology just as America steals technology from other countries. Please do not be so blind. Oh, by the way China has been sending students to America and other G7 countries for decades. A great profit center for universities - foreign students. America educates them and gives them internships in American companies and since American immigration rules are tough, they go back to China and apply what they learned. I wonder what they would copy when interring in a technology company?

    @@jamestimlin856 The US seems to be dying to me. I can't wait to see what amazing advances will come out of China in the coming century! The anti-chinese propaganda despite the overwhelming shittiness of the US is hypocritical and indicative of it's insecurity... and the desire of it's military-industrial complex to oppose the PRC's rapid growth into the status of world superpower. America serves capital for capital's sake, China sees capital as what it really is and should be: resources to make people's lives better. That's what true political legitimacy is. I wish the states would follow it's example but that would be evil socialism. That and the status quo is immensely profitable: shareholders care not for the long term future of the nation. State capitalism seems like a vastly superior alternative, if lifting 800 million people out of poverty is anything to go by.

    My family is in Nanjing and I'm working in Shanghai, 300KM in between. I go back and forth every week by high speed train. If I want, I can go back and forth everyday! There are lots of people like me who live in one city and work in another city. Thanks to the high speed trains that make it possible!

    One thing I learned about their high-speed trains brings is the ease of online purchase, for everything. They could buy some unique fruits from a local farm down in southern China, Guangdong, or western China, Xinjiang, and have them by their door in Beijing within 3 days. In Canada, the best Ubereat can bring to my door are whatever fruits available in Walmart down the street.

    Beijing to Shanghai 🚗 by car: 2 days (stop in Nanjing in between) 🚄 by train: 4 hours You leave in the early morning, then u can meet ur client at lunch, visit his firm in the afternoon, take the train around 5pm, back to Beijing around 10pm, drink some whiskey and have a good rest🍷

    Almost all high-speed railways operate at a loss, and no government is willing to pay for it. Only the Chinese government has done it, and the high-speed railway has greatly improved the economy and travel of the Chinese people.

    How can the US lead the high-speed rail, spending how many billions ahead of China? How could it be. I laughed seeing the US minister, Pete, who wanted to get ahead of China, the talk of politicians in the US is just nonsense. First, fix the bureaucracy of corruption in infrastructure projects. Paying high taxes still has potholes. Meanwhile in the US, we are still debating politics like a child. Like an endless fool.

    Frankly, the demand for US passenger rail just isn't there. Most people would rather just fly over the large distances, and drive/take bus for shorter ones. These grandiose projects in China wouldn't really scale or make sense in a lot of other countries - even there it's largely a loss-taking enterprise, as the video states.

    @@Pheer777 you can’t only offer slow rail at high prices and then when people choose to fly say “demand isn’t there.” That’s not true at all, especially in the northeast corridor where rail is demonstrably better than flying for most journeys, even with the current rail speeds. There are plenty of corridors where high speed rail makes a great deal of sense in the “too long to drive, too short to fly” city pairs.

    I’ve lived in China since 2015, and I’m always impressed by how efficient the entire railway system works. Travelling between cities or within cities is really easy, safe and affordable in China and it’s one of my favourite aspects about this country. It’s hard to appreciate the true scale and might of China unless you visit and spend time travelling within the country.

    The high speed trains in china are fantastic and easy to use -even for foreigners. I travelled between Chengdhu and Chongqing. Effortless. Clean and fast. The business class section is the best I have ever seen and I live in Japan. Prices are also very reasonable. Good report

    In almost every city even county(the second smallest administrative area unit), you can take the high-speed rail to every large city in China, such as Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. You can even take the high-speed rail to Hong Kong from mainland. The most amazing thing is that the departure and arrival time is precise to every minute on the ticket which you can access from your phone, you can know what time you will arrive a week before you go.

    @@-M0LE I don't think China's wages are anywhere close to reaching parity with western countries. But, you can live very well if you have a job that is high in demand and that locals are not competing for. And once you're settled, I think you would have a good time in China regardless. It's not for everybody, but there is so much potential and adventure to be had.

    You guys need to know a Chinese university Southwest Jiaotong University when it comes to talking about the Chinese high-speed railway. It is known as “the Cradle for the Chinese Railway Engineers” and “Oriental Cornell”. And it has many famous engineers who built amazing infrastructures such as bridges, high-speed railways, modern subways, and highways.

    I've had a chance to travel with Chinese high speed railroad. It is comfortable, fast and cheap way of travel. Funny thing is that going 300km/h in a Chinese train feels more comfortable and safer than going 140km/h by train in my country. xD

    Actually been on the Beijing Guangzhou line and economy class feels like a first-class ticket compared to the bs Amtrack offers lmao. It was fast, reliable, affordable, and really quiet. ALSO the food was pretty freaking good compared to the dog food amtrack serves.

    It's very hard to understand how convenient and efficient Chinese high speed railway network is without actually experiencing it. Currently I live in a tier-4 city in central China and work in a university there. Every Thursday I take high speed train to a tier-5 city which is about 140 km away from my city. It takes 31 minutes to get there. And there are five shifts of trains going my way from 7:10 am to 9:00 am, so it's quite easy to make a plan which may fit my timetable well. I can't imagine that I'll be able to teach in a different university in a different city from 10 am to 3 pm (with lunch break) Without high speed rail when I get up as usual in my city every Thursday morning. And I'll be home on time for supper as if I've just finished a day's work in my city. Of course, one can always drive such a distance to work, which I'm afraid, would have already worn me out before I get to the students. I definitely will not accept this kind of extra work without efficient high speed rail. I really enjoy it when I can go out of the city temporarily to ride with the beautiful scenery along the rail and take in the fresh spring which is in full bloom everywhere on the road.

    @@RK-bj8ho Depends, majority of the slow trains still operate. Usually the high speed networks is built on different lines (isolated) to the slow trains. They do go to the same stations though.

    @@Jason-wp2nq Probably those slow trains has numerous stops that are close to each other, more of to serve passengers within cities and close towns. Those high speed rails are more to connect distant cities and will have far fewer stops.

    Yes, this is indeed extremely convenient for us. Whenever I travel in China now I take the high-speed railway. There are a couple of other important things to mention. 1. The train almost always arrives exactly on time. If your train departures at 1:58, they usually start opening the gate and check tickets at 1:53 - 1:55. Hundreds to thousands of people would quickly pass the gate, go downstairs, and get on the train within 3 - 5 minutes. Then the train leaves exactly at 1:58. So compare to the airport, it is so much faster. You can arrive at the train station 20 minutes before it departs. 2. Purchasing tickets is now much more convenient. You simply download an app, connect your citizen ID to it, and can purchase or adjust tickets at any time. When you go to the train station, you only swipe your ID card, no additional tickets. 3. There has been only one major accident on the high-speed railway, which was in 2011. 40 people died and speed was limited to something like below 300km/h. In recent years they started to lift the speed regulations and trains are faster now. 4. It is also important to point out that only about half of the trains on the high-speed railway are actually high speed. For example, Beijing to Shanghai, 32 trains a day. 5 of them take 12 hours while others take 4-5 hours. Between smaller cities, the ratio is much higher. If the train number starts with Z or K, it is a slow train (120-160km / h on average). Train number starts with D or G means a fast train (200-300km/h on average) 5. The environment is very clean since it is not been built for very long. The ride is also very stable. I think there are a lot of experiment videos online of people putting an egg or a cup full of water on the train's window and nothing happens after hours.

    K,Z,T and numbers only lines are actually just regular trains. While the D and G trains are high speed lines, with Ds being capped at 200/250 kph and Gs capped at 300/350 kph

    @@maruf2050 I think they would have to go to the window to purchase manually. The APP only reads Chinese citizenship ID. Since nobody really purchase tickets at windows anyways, they won't have to wait for long.

    High speed rail is honestly one of my favorite elements of modern China. It is so efficient to travel between cities, and the ride to a nearby city is most likely shorter than my sad subway commute to work. I still remember taking the dirty old train with overnight bunk beds when I was younger. It was such a surprise when the high speed train was first introduced.

    @@junizhao tbh i think the American highway system is better, at least currently. There are literally well paved roads that go to all corners of the country and America is heavily car focused. Chinese roads start to suck when you get further away from the large cities, that's been my experience traveling. (Most recently I was in Guangxi 2yrs ago and I just can't praise the road condition.) US roads do need repair in the busiest sectors but they've also been around much longer.

    @@yukie_tn things are different now. American roads are crumbling. Some areas are like war zone, cracks and potholes are all over the place. Chinese local roads are not as extensive as that of the US, but the super highways are way better, and double the mileage of the interstate system. I double you were in China 2 years ago, it would be true 7-8 years ago though....

    My experience with HSR back in the days when working in China was amazing. It enabled me to meet my client 300km away and back home on the same day. As The B1M pointed out correctly, 'the social and wider economical impact' of HSR is more valuable than making profit. The rest of the world shall learn from it.

    @@sajiktm China is actually usually ranked much worse than most democracies in terms of corruption, the thing is that China just can do more with less due to the overall lower cost of labour and stuff i general, not to mention the power of the Chinese government itself and corruption happens more out of sight/internally. Of the top 20 least corrupt countries in the world, only 5 are non-European, China isn't even in the top 100. As for drugs and alcohol use, China indeed doesn't do bad, though the difference isn't that large compared to for example western Europe. Most Western European countries are between 2-3% of their population, China just shy of 2%. Though there are several developed countries above 3,5% (Canada, Australia, ...) or even above 5% (US, Russia, ...)

    most nations would be uncapable of doing this because the operating cost must be covered and china can move money from one place to other. I'm peruvian and this would help a lot but because we have a small population the losses per year would be in the end much higher than the initial cost of the project

    The issue from what I see in Australia is that infrastructure seem to be running by accountants and not true visionaries. Benefits are more than just black and white profits and losses. I think the Chinese planners understands this very well.

    Yep, improve the country, improve economic prospects, reduce individual expenses. (unlocking higher quality of life per dollar earned) Pre-COVID I talked to someone that wanted to go to a school reunion... but didn't because of the $2600 in flights/hotels to get across the country. Some of these cross-country train tickets in China cost $100. Even with China's income being an average of 1/4th, that's an income comparable $400 trip across the country. Those $2200 saved would be spent in some other manner, boosting GDP and unlocking higher quality of life for both the person that saved it, and whoever they choose to spend it with in the future. The proper way to do infrastructure is definitely to keep dropping prices until it goes a smidge negative on profit, as then the most people will be utilising it, so you get maximum efficiency and maximum GDP/lifestyle impact.

    Cost-benefit analysis should not be conducted on the infrastructure alone (then the infrastructure itself might incur a financial loss), but on a wider scale of the society and projected into the future -- the improved economy and resulting tax income, etc. However, private companies are never willing to do the investment as they always do the cost-benefit analysis purely on the project alone.

    This makes me homesick for China- I lived there for 10 years- I remember the HSR opening in Baoji 2006 to huge fanfare in the city, and I cannot believe they've got one all the way out to Xigatse in Tibet now! and my monthly trips on the HSR from Guangzhou Sth to Hong Kong.....ahhhhh, the memories

    People living in smaller cities around the mega cities would normally spend 2+ hours to drive into the mega cities in China. It makes it almost impossible to commute. Now, with affordable ticket of High speed rail, those people can do that trip with 20-30 minutes train ride into the centre of those mega cities. Economic impact is impressive for the greater area.

    @@HAITAIIO you are wrong, I used to work at Zhongguancun Software Park and took High speed train to travel between Beijing and Shanghai every week between 2012 and 2013. It took me about 1 hour 15 min from Zhongguancun Software Park to South station (30 km). And in Shanghai I lived in Pudong, about 30 km from Hongqiao Station, it took me about 1hour 15 min to get home.

    From my hometown to my college, it used to take 7 hours driving, or 13 hours train. Now it is 3 hours train. Just onboard, watch a movie or take a nap or enjoy a meal, and you arrive!

    Chinese terrain is far, far more challenging compared to Europe or America. If one travels across the eastern provinces in China, it's 90% mountain tunnels, viaducts across valleys or bridges. European high-speed tracks are most laid across relatively flat terrain. The low $17mn per km construction cost in China is testament to their construction efficiency, low labour costs and no-nonsense design and procurement.

    I've been living in China since 2013(Nanjing and Shanghai). Travelling around China is so easy and convenient. The high-speed train system is absolutely amazing and makes travelling so affordable. The Maglev in Shanghai gets you to Pudong airport in 8 minutes. A journey that can take about an hour plus by by car/subway depending where you're travelling from in Shanghai. THere are plans for another Maglev too. Besides the HSR, Shanghai for example, has expanded its local subway system extensively in the 8 years I've been here. It is crazy! but very welcome. Just yesterday my friends and I took subway line 16 to the outskirts of Shanghai. Took about an hour, but cost next to nothing. The government's plan is to connect large economic zones with smaller ones, thus boosting the countries overall economy. And so far, it is working very well!

    i work in Bethesda MD, for a contractor who is building 7272 wisconsin ave Purple line station. the purple line is REUSING an old freight train rail, involves no imminent domain, with the track already existing. yet this project was proposed back in 1990s, took over 15 years of environmental study and another 10 years due to negihborhoods opposing light rail train running in their neighborhood on exisiting raillines. an 17 mile LIGHT RAIL took almost 30 years in the US while china builds over 800 miles of high speed rail from scratch every year....

But it stems that the US clearly has more pressing matters, EVEN THOUGH it is a car country. The US does not take care of its roads.

    @@user-st6tk1cb8o everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I will listen to my leaders if it ever came down to it... but no, I can't hate China. If anything, hate the politicians who run it (that would be more understandable). I've met some awesome Chinese people out here, and when I was in Japan. Asians in general (out of experience, Korean, Japanese, and filipinos) are people who have much more ambition than Americans, so yes hate them that they can do more with less (minus China of course). And I steer clear of the media, and when I do listen to anything, its off KZread. And before I formulate my own opinions, I do a little research and decide for myself which side I would take. I can not stand people who take everything at face value. And COVID? WTF? LOL. Blame them if you want, absolutely hate them. But if that's the case, blame yourself (not you in particular, but to anyone who hates them for that reason), and anyone else who didn't heed the warnings and respected one another enough to social distance and all that other crap. China has been out of Quarantine for quite some time now, but the US is still in it? Says a lot don't it?

    meanwhile in the US as someone sits in traffic waiting 3 hours to get to the corner and back for a taco, i live in a city of 100,000 in idaho ( west coast state ) and no lie there are 1 lane roads here with flashing red lights ( 4 way stop ) ....something that was out of date about 10-15 years ago they are finally updating it to a ' 4 way light ' * oh my!! * by the end of the year- it just shows how far we are behind China

    @@David-ok4ee ohk np, but your opinions and facts have some flaws. in a single-party-ruled country, u are basically forced to think like the party and not have individual thoughts. meanwhile in a democracy, you cant be as single-minded and united as a single party but u get way creativity and opportunities, and contradicting my preferred line, u get a chance to unity many more than u wish. we are humans with separate brains and thought processes and not robots and slaves working a higher monarch. and im angry about ccp cause they paint usa and other countries in a bad light while they themselves are bullying their neighbours just cause they seem to have that strength now. taiwan, india, sri lanka, philippnes, japan, korea, australia etc. in fact the recent post on global times says it all where they simply compares body cremations to their failure of a rocket without sympathizing for the lives lost by their homegrown virus. there are even some youtubers who went to china for a normal life exploring the country and were treated like horse shit by the government officials.

    I still remember in 2009-2012 when their HSR boom was beginning, our media were acting like clowns saying all types of dumb things about this endeavour, using the same language we use now, saying it is some evil play to control its population and what not. No one is laughing now I suppose.

    要致富,先修路(基础建设)真的是太正确了。举两个例子。作为一个国内和加拿大都有生意的small business owner,我从温哥华发多伦多小件物流最快的物流时间是3 business days,需要花费78加元;而中国的除偏远地区的全国物流基本上都是2天送达,每单物流费用只需要3块5毛钱人民币。另外,加拿大一个10G流量的4g手机费和1000兆网宽的月费用在170加币。而在国内15g流量的5g手机费和千兆网宽的月费只要50多人民币。做生意成本真的低好多,经济活动也明显更有活力。

    查了下,B1M用的关于国内城市人口的数据还是十多年前的(和六普的数据差不太多),看了眼最新央视统计(基于七普),不查不知道,一查吓一跳。。。卧槽,国内有总共91个城市如今已经跨过了五百万人口大关= =这确实光靠公路和飞机这种主流西方交通模式根本撑不起这个人口规模的市场和流动(也许等我们二三十年后步入发达国家的门槛,可能会重新定义什么是发达国家吧?),发展高铁也是必然,甚至现在高铁发展只能算勉强跟上了城市化的步伐,因为疫情留学滞留国外快两年了,看抖音老家变得我都快认不得了= =

    China :- More than 35000 km of High Speed Railway lines built in 20 years. India in 2029 :- The Mumbai Ahemdabad bullet train project and Nashik Pune Semi High Speed Railway project are delayed by another 5 years.

    I once rode the subway from Shanghai Airport all the way to our office on the other side of Shanghai, basically riding end-to-end and taking me 3hrs. In Tokyo, that would've costed me around ¥1500 ($15). Meanwhile in China, no matter how far you go along the city rails, the most they will charge you is 元11 (less than $2)!

    Because all the companies that runs rail transportation are state-owned, and they operate on a regardless-of-profit mindset. The main purpose of these infrastructure is to boost inter-regional economy rather than profit ting from its own. Always having the larger picture in mind.

    The western world have been very generous to praise Japan, but the reality, China is much better than Japan . Most of Chinese have bigger house , much happier than a average Japanese. A lot of Japanese moved to China recent years

    Hope somebody recommend my videos to those who are learning Chinese. I teach Chinese with humor and cute pictures. Chinese characters still retain their pictographic origins. Knowing what the characters look like originally can help remember them. I’ve spent about 100,000 hours studying English humor and Western culture, and many years studying Chinese culture and jokes. My native language is Chinese.

    pre-pandemic I travelled to China 5 times a year on business and family matters. China is an amazing place, great people and un unbelievable transport infrastructure that makes the UK an embarrassment! And all this fake news about the Xinjiang province is utter nonsense - as usual the (Western!!) media is "clever" at relaying all this.
