KZread needs to get over itself. This is a seriously essential color for just about any painter! Thank you for detailing the various versions of it. I had no idea there was this wide of a range.

Man with all the variety in hues you could totally do an entire palette where the only greens you have are named Hooker's Green 😂 Absolutely in love with the M. Graham and Roman Szmal ones, those are such gorgeous hues 🥺💚

it's times like these where the maimeriblu range being exclusively single pigments tends to trip them up. sure, pure pigments are good, but there's nothing wrong with a nice convenience mix (and a lot of these greens sure as hell qualify for nice convenience mixes!)

You mentioned Holbein's version being your favorite and I must say that Holbein has a lot of amazing green watercolor choices. A great phthalo green YS is Holbein's 'Bamboo Green'.

Wprd at KZread: this is an art- and paint / pigmentchannel. Please, do not demonetize this, as others already said: Hooker's Green is an essential green color on almost every painters palette. Thank you;, Oto for comparing these for us. I have several of them but I often use the one my mother left me: Rembrandt's.

Based on the pigments originally used in this mix I'd say M. Graham's and Roman Szmal's versions are probably closest to what it would have looked like.

This is a wonderful overview. The differences in colour are huge in the Hooker's Greens, I didn't even anticipate that (despite of having swatched a few of them myself). I like the new test on black paper a lot :)

Great review, as usual! The "What's in a name" game is legendary as played by the paint manufacturers. If you like the Qor Hooker's green, you'll love Daniel Smith's Deep Sap (PB27, PY3, & PO48). When it comes to convenience colors like this, Know Your Pigments is the first line of defense. That's how Maimeri gets away with labeling PG17 (Chromium Oxide green) as "Hooker's".

Once again, I especially appreciate your detailed verbal descriptions, as red-green colorblindness makes differentiating between pre-mixed pigments a near impossible task. ("Hooker's Green" is one of the worst in this regard.) Thank-you for de-mystifying it. :)

Oooh, I’ve been looking forward to this one! Hooker's Green is so interesting to me because of the big variation in hues - this is one of the known convenience colours I’d most like to hear each company’s development team talk about why they made the choices they made when deciding on their specific hue. That would be so fascinating to me. I don’t have a Hooker's Green in my own palettes, but I did use to have Rembrandt's Hooker's Green Deep, which is a PG7+PY150, and it makes an amazing black mixed with almost any tone of dioxazine purple, so I sometimes still pull out my HG half pan when I want a nice, full black. Btw, I don’t know what’s up with KZread but several of my favourite creators across very different hobbies have run into issues like yours lately. Unexplained lack of recommendations in the algorithm, missing notifications, all sorts of frustrating shenanigans, despite them being completely lovely, hardworking people that provide great content in their field. It must be very frustrating to be messed with like that as a content creator. I know it’s frustrating for me as a regular viewer to watch you guys struggle with such seemingly arbitrary rules for when your videos and channels do well or not. I wish KZread would stop moving the goal posts without telling you. :(

My favourites from this video would be M. Graham's' Roman Smal's and Schmincke's. Schmincke's mostly because it’s a complete weirdo. Beautiful colour, but so far from what I would expect from a Hooker's Green.

I remember LMAO 🤣 the first time I heard of this green. My thought was "consort", "companion" or something else would be more appropriate in today's culture 😃. Of course, knowing the history, it shouldn't matter 💚 Second only to DS Green Apatite Gen, Hooker's is my fave Green. It has such depth & versatility.

I am currently only buying single pigment colors, then mixing my own. I love the M. Graham color. I think I will mix up something similar from my tubes! I hate the Schmincke one! Thank you!

I had put my Schmincke aside for about 1 year and then tried to paint a landscape with it. So drab and opaque. I’m clearly happier with transparent colors. I also steered away from Hooker’s because it seemed too neon for me. Looks like I would enjoy the M Graham one. Thanks!

I *love* the M Graham Hooker's Green! It looks great in paintings with any green foliage, whether leaves on flowers or trees and/or grasses. What I like best is that it also plays well with other green shades. I feel it gives an, "I'm out in nature!" feeling to my paintings.

I can't live without the Roman Szmal! It is one of my favorites and I sneak it into everything. I haven't found a reason to like Qor yet, even though Golden is my fave acrylic by far. But I think I might pick up that M Graham! Thanks, Oto!

I think the Roman Szmal is my favourite, probably the closest to what William Hooker actually used. Hooker and Payne today generally seem to bear little to no resemblance to what the painters actually used.

I really don’t understand why there are so many differences in one colour…🤔. Very sad that I found your channel so late. Would have definitely bought many other colours. Well, it’s never TOO late…! Thanks for all the information you present to us. Hope you are doing great in your new home!

C'mon youtube, yeesh. Thanks for this! I have a wee tube of Rembrandt Hooker's Green, which is PG7 & PY150, and it's very nice but I largely use it for mixing up shadows or greys, and I'm running low on it. I'm seriously considering that QoR one because I think it might work even better for shadows and neutrals. Also, I'm partial to QoR. I don't know if the price is justified either, but they go on sale every so often, and I love the non-earth tones they have.

DS and W/N are my preferred of this group

I have never had any fixed idea of how Hooker's Green should look but I really do like my Roman Szmal version for florals. It does have Prussian Blue in it though so I'm not sure of the lightfastness. I will need to do a lightfastness test before using it in something other than my sketchbook.

It would be cool if you made a video about your favorite neutrals and how to mix perfect neutrals. Daniel Smith did come out with a signature grey series witch I really enjoy using Joseph Z's cool grey. A cheaper alternative than buying the separate tubes for mixing. Thank you for making these videos really good information and relaxing. Really helps me with my anxiety.

Sennelier's PG36 on its own is weirdly opaque too. It doesn't list anything else in the formula, but I've wondered if it has white or something else added to it.

Sennelier's got 2 PG36 paints: ITA that the emerald has something extra in it (not listed) but the 'sennelier green' is the transparent pg36. I'm good with the cinereous blue (mimics cerulean I guess) because they list it's just phthalo plus white... but I won't mix it because I end up with the unintentional mess (Esp in clouds/skies.) Similarly, they should list whatever's in 'emerald' because of the potential mess. Imo. And I like Sennelier a lot, but that's a shortcoming.

Hi. Great video. Regarding Old Holland-I have like 10 different half pans of Old Holland and never have I experienced any bubbling or other issues you've mentioned. Actually Old Holland, in my opinion, is an incredibly vibrant and lovely brand of paint...Tho I do paint quit slow and gentle, so perhaps that has something to do with it?. Also I wonder if the bumbling could be from your water in your area or some other outside factor bc Ive never experienced anything but lovely paining with Old Holland and I'd definitely recommend this brand. Anyway...great video. Thanks for sharing♥️

I love painting with Old Holland paints as well! I have never experienced bubbling issues either. I do however notice a difference in their pan or tube formula. The tubes are quite heavy on the binder, where the pans are just lovely to paint with, and you hardly need any paint! So I'm thinking Oto uses their tubes, and that's why she might have issues?

Ive only used Old Holland in half pans but Im happy to know now to perhaps skip their tube paint-especially since painting with binder heavy watercolor paint is, in my opinion, a not so favorable experience...What are your fav colors from Old Holland? Im in love with their Cobalt colors, just beautiful!

@@nadeaner.cowley513 I haven't tried their cobalt colours yet, apart from the cerulean blue deep, which is very nice! I love their Golden Barok red, Red gold lake, Scheveningen purple brown, and of course their manganese blue! Though they have switched formula now to a hue, I was able to get the original. Scheveningen Violet and Caribean blue are also stunning, they have too many nice colours 😅

@@OtoKano That would be interesting! Underneath Jane Blundells blogpost of the full Old Holland line swatches, she also mentions that her tubes were full of gum arabic, and she advises the pans over the tubes. I found that very interesting, as I concluded the same with the tubes I had.

At 11:02 you mention that PG36 is pthalo green, but I thought PG7 was pthalo green and PG36 was cobalt chromite (also sometimes known as cerulean blue or cobalt turquoise).

Cerulean or Cobalt blue are made with PB36, while PG36 is phthalo green yellow shade.

If you like that Qor colour, look at colours named prussian green. I think Schmincke make it with pb60.

Hi Oto! I’m curious about why you’re trying to replace Jadeite. I try to stay up on all your videos but maybe missed something? Just recently acquired Jadeite and am looking forward to seeing what it does. Can you enlightenment please? And to repeat what others have said: thank you so much for your channel.

so there's a controversy with DS primatek paints that are just way too big for me to explain in a comment sections, but short of it is that they add other pigments into the primatek paints that they do not declare. As I say, way more than that tho. Also, the DS CEO is intollerable and shady AF. Also also, they just hired someone who blatantly copied my swatch sheets without credit (and sells them) as their ambassador artist. I still LOVE DS paints and the paints have done nothing wrong. But for the high price of Primatek paints, if I can find a cheaper version with less controversies, I would like that too.

It's always a bummer PG8 isn't available commercially (except from White Nights, I think?). Like, sure it's not very lightfast, but it's SUCH a good color

White Nights (and their student brand Sonnet), Renesans (Polish brand , Mir (Spanish brand) and Rosa Gallery (Ukrainian).

Wow...hookers green is interesting color. Its very different from one brand to another. Personally my fav are from mijello and sennelier

What an odd coincidence. You’re right- there are two William Hookers. Both born around 1779/1785 and both botanical artists
